DeckCraft Explained: Free Open-Source Presentation App
Platforms, over 200 scriptable commands, agent control and where it falls short of PowerPoint.
DeckCraft is a free, open-source presentation app that opens and saves PowerPoint (.pptx) files. At Layer3Labs, we build custom agents and enterprise integrations for small and mid-sized business workflows. DeckCraft's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and command-line interface (CLI) are the part that touches that work. Its page labels it "In development" at version 0.5.0, so if you use PowerPoint today, pilot DeckCraft on a few decks before you replace it. This DeckCraft is presentation software from the ArtCraft team. It is not a Crazyflie drone add-on or a deck-building tool.
DeckCraft is one of twelve Crafting Apps from the ArtCraft team. The lineup spans vector illustration, video editing, spreadsheets and word processing, and each app carries its own status label. The ArtCraft Launcher (version 0.2.1) installs and updates every Crafting App.
The page does not name an open-source license, so read the license text in the DeckCraft GitHub repository before you redistribute or embed the code. Questions and feedback go to the ArtCraft Discord.
Is DeckCraft a Free PowerPoint Alternative?
Yes. DeckCraft is a free open-source presentation app that opens and saves .pptx files. Its page marks the download "Free · Open source" and says "No subscription, no cloud." The web build is a WebAssembly app you host yourself.
Pricing terms for DeckCraft remain separate from the broader ArtCraft creative suite. The ArtCraft pricing page sells optional subscriptions for artificial intelligence (AI) image and video generation credits, while noting that ArtCraft can be used without a subscription. Those credit fees do not apply to DeckCraft.
In October 2026, Tom's Hardware reported that software engineer Brandon Thomas created DeckCraft, GridCraft and WordCraft using Claude as free alternatives to PowerPoint, Excel and Word, shared on GitHub. Two Reddit threads in r/artificial and r/singularity carried the same story. The ArtCraft product page itself credits the ArtCraft team.
Slide Design Features in DeckCraft
DeckCraft includes slide masters and eleven layouts with inheriting placeholders. You can pick from eight original themes with font and color schemes. Slide decks can be organized into sections, and you can attach speaker notes to each slide.
DeckCraft includes over 150 preset vector shapes with adjustment handles, sticky connectors, curve booleans, gradient fills, and outline styling. For animation, DeckCraft provides Morph transitions alongside entrance, emphasis, exit, and motion-path animations with by-paragraph builds.
Presentation delivery runs through a dedicated presenter view. Presenter view shows speaker notes, upcoming slide previews, elapsed timers, rehearsal timings, and pen drawing tools. For sharing outside DeckCraft, DeckCraft exports vector Portable Document Format (PDF) slides, handouts, and rendered slide images. The DeckCraft page publishes no list of unsupported .pptx features, so put shapes, connectors, masters and animations in your test decks.
Platforms and Installation Options
DeckCraft runs on major operating systems and supports self-hosted web browser deployments. Apple macOS users can download a Universal disk image supporting Apple silicon and Intel processors. Windows downloads provide 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM64 installers alongside portable zip files. Linux packages are available separately as Flatpak, AppImage, .deb, .rpm and tarball formats for x86_64 and ARM64 architectures. The ArtCraft team also provides a FreeBSD x86_64 tarball and a WebAssembly web build for self-hosting.
Installation options include the ArtCraft Launcher, standalone binary downloads, and building from source. The ArtCraft Launcher (version 0.2.1) installs and updates every Crafting App in the lineup. You can also build DeckCraft from source using Rust 1.90 or newer from the GitHub repository. The build commands require running git clone https://github.com/storytold/deckcraft.git, cd deckcraft, and cargo run --release -p deckcraft. The ArtCraft team publishes SHA-256 checksums for downloads, so users can verify installer integrity before running setup. For a pilot, install from the ArtCraft Launcher and verify the checksum, or use the web build if you cannot install software.
How AI Agents Control DeckCraft Through MCP and the CLI
DeckCraft's page lists over 200 commands scriptable from the command-line interface (CLI), a JSON control channel and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for autonomous agents. If you want a primer on how MCP servers connect agents to software, read Claude Code MCP Explained. The ArtCraft team also provides deckcraft-cli 0.5.0 as a headless command-line tool for automated environments.
A script can call deckcraft-cli commands, or an AI agent can call the MCP server, to build a deck from a table in a test environment. Review generated decks by eye before anything goes to a client.
Test DeckCraft's Automation on a Sample Deck
You can evaluate DeckCraft's automated slide generation by running a structured data-to-slides trial inside an isolated test environment. Before installing DeckCraft, verify your installer or portable archive against the published SHA-256 checksums on the DeckCraft page. Start the experiment by feeding a small data table into deckcraft-cli or connecting through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to generate a presentation file.
Use deckcraft-cli commands or the JSON control channel to build slides from the table rows, then check which layouts and placeholders the output used. If the output needs heavy manual fixing, the automation will not save you time on real decks. Have the automation script save the output as a presentation file or export individual slide images.
Once the run completes, inspect the generated deck by eye. Check specifically for text overflow across text frames, altered shape positions, substituted fonts, and timing inconsistencies in paragraph-build entrance animations. This manual review reveals formatting defects before you connect real operational data sources.
How to Pilot DeckCraft at Work
Run a pilot before approving broader adoption. For wider context on open-source agents, see open-source AI agents for business. Pick three non-critical decks: one with your brand template and custom fonts, one with many shapes and connectors, and one with animations and transitions.
Open each deck in DeckCraft, save the file, and reopen it in PowerPoint if you have it. Check slide masters and placeholders, font rendering, shape positions and sticky connectors, and animation sequences. Write down what breaks during the round trip. The DeckCraft page publishes no list of unsupported .pptx features, so your internal checklist is the only compatibility record that exists.
Assign an internal team member to own compatibility testing across releases. If you already pay for PowerPoint, keep those licenses active until your pilot passes.
Who Should Stay on PowerPoint
Stay on Microsoft PowerPoint if your decks rely on SmartArt, embedded audio or video, or complex charts. The DeckCraft page does not publish support details for SmartArt or embedded media beyond a chart slide screenshot caption.
Stay on PowerPoint if you need a service level agreement (SLA), an enterprise support contract or published security audit results. The DeckCraft page publishes none of them, and the ArtCraft team directs questions and feedback to the ArtCraft Discord.
That advice would change if the ArtCraft team published a verified .pptx compatibility test, a list of unsupported features and a commercial support commitment. Until then, keep DeckCraft to pilots.
