There Is No Official Z.AI App for iOS, Android, or Desktop

As of September 2, 2026, Z.AI does not offer an official app for iPhone, Android, or desktop. At Layer3Labs, we review the tools client teams plan to install before rollout. When a company doesn't provide a first-party app, it's easy for people to download an unrelated app with the same name by mistake. We checked z.ai and its chat product at chat.z.ai, and neither site linked to an iOS, Android, or desktop download.

That doesn't mean you can't use Z.AI on your phone. Its chat product works in a mobile browser, and both iOS and Android let you save the page to your home screen for one-tap access. Developers can skip the browser altogether and use the Z.AI API in their own code.

What Z.AI Publishes for Phones and Desktops

Z.AI publishes one product for people rather than developers: the web chat at chat.z.ai. Z.AI is the international brand of the Chinese lab Zhipu, and it describes that chat product as an "Advanced AI Chatbot & Agent powered by GLM-5.3-Flash". Everything it offers opens in a browser tab, so any device with a modern browser already has access.

This is a dated finding rather than a permanent state of the world. We checked z.ai and chat.z.ai on 2026-09-02 and found no download link for iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS. Re-read those same two pages before you install anything that carries the Z.AI name, because a real first-party client would be announced there before it reached a store.

The chat and the API do not answer with the same model. The web chat at chat.z.ai runs on the lighter GLM-5.3-Flash, while the API serves GLM-5.3 as well, the 753B model that shipped on 2026-08-17 with a 1-million-token context window. What you lose without a native app is an icon and a launcher. What you should know either way is which model is answering you.

The Z.AI App Listings in the Stores Come from Other Publishers

Two store listings surface when people search for a Z.AI app, and neither was published by Z.AI. On Google Play, "Z.ai : App Directions" (package name com.ciblek.inara.app) is an unofficial guide and educational app. Its own listing states that it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Zhipu AI or Z.AI. On the Apple App Store, "Z-AI Multi Translator" is a translation product from a separate publisher, listed under the developer name Zillius Solutions.

Neither app gives you GLM-5.3. Install one expecting the chat product and you get unrelated software with its own account and its own data handling. It cannot see anything in a chat.z.ai account.

Searching for a Z.AI APK file outside the stores is the riskier version of the same mistake. An APK from a mirror site has passed no publisher review, and you are trusting whatever the uploader compiled. In the rollouts we run for client teams, the failure we hit most often is an employee installing a same-name listing and pasting work documents into it. The fix is to give people the browser link and tell them the store carries nothing official.

How to Use Z.AI on an Android Phone or iPhone

Open chat.z.ai in Safari or Chrome and sign in, and you have Z.AI on your phone. There is no separate mobile account to create, and the same login works on the laptop you use later in the day.

Both mobile browsers can put that page on your home screen. In Safari on iOS, the Share menu carries Add to Home Screen. In Chrome on Android, the same item sits in the three-dot menu. The result is an icon you tap once instead of a URL you type, which is most of what an app gives you day to day.

How that saved shortcut opens depends on the web-app settings the site declares, and we have not verified what chat.z.ai declares. Treat a full-screen launch without browser controls as a bonus rather than a promise. The shortcut itself works either way.

A browser tab does have real limits worth planning around. You get no reliable push notifications, no offline access, and no entry in the OS share sheet, so copy and paste is the handoff between Z.AI and your other apps. Use it for sessions you start yourself, and keep anything that has to alert you on a tool that ships a real client.

How to Use Z.AI on a Mac or Windows PC

On a Mac or a Windows PC, the browser is the Z.AI desktop app. Z.AI publishes no .dmg, no .exe, and no installer of any kind as of 2026-09-02, so a page that offers you one is not distributing Z.AI software.

Chrome and Edge can both open a chosen site in its own window through their install or shortcut menu item. You get a dock or taskbar icon and a window without tabs. That is a browser feature rather than anything Z.AI ships, and it is the closest thing to a Z.AI desktop app that exists today.

Third-party wrappers that repackage chat sites into desktop windows are a different matter. A wrapper sits between you and chat.z.ai and can see everything you type into it, and none of them are published by Z.AI. Stick to the browser, or to the API if you want something programmatic.

If what you want on the desktop is Z.AI inside a coding tool, that route already exists and does not involve an app store. How Developers Reach Z.AI Without an App

Developers use the Z.AI API, and no client is involved at any point. Register at z.ai/model-api, create a key on the API key page, and send requests to the base URL https://api.z.ai/api/paas/v4/ with an Authorization: Bearer header.

The API is OpenAI-compatible at the chat/completions path, which means an existing integration usually needs a base URL, a key, and a model name changed rather than a rewrite. The callable model ids named in the quick-start docs include glm-5.3, glm-5.3-flash, glm-image, and cogvideox-3.

That route is why the missing app matters less than it sounds. You can build the phone interface you wanted, wire GLM-5.3 into an internal tool, or run it behind a Slack bot, without waiting on Z.AI to ship a client. GLM-5.3 costs $1.40 per million input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens, and GLM-5.3-Flash costs $0.075 and $0.25, so a light internal tool is cheap to run. Four Ways to Reach Z.AI Compared

Pick the browser if you want to use Z.AI as a chat assistant, and pick the API if Z.AI is going inside something you are building. The coding plan is worth it only if you already work in Claude Code, Cline, or OpenCode. On that plan, requests for GLM-5.2 and GLM-5.1 are routed automatically to GLM-5.3.

Who Should Not Rely on Z.AI from a Phone

Z.AI in a mobile browser is a poor fit for anyone who needs an assistant that works without a connection or pushes notifications. Field staff on patchy signal, drivers, and anyone who wants the assistant to nudge them should use a product that ships a reviewed native client instead.

It is also the wrong choice if your employer restricts where company data can go. Z.AI is operated by a Chinese lab, and plenty of firms have a policy that settles this question before any tool choice does. We cover that decision in Chinese AI models and security risks. One more group should skip it: people who install software specifically because a store reviewed it. There is no reviewed Z.AI build to install, so that safety check is not available here, and a browser tab you can close is the safer substitute.

What Would Change This Z.AI App Answer

This answer changes when Z.AI publishes a first-party client and links it from z.ai or chat.z.ai. A company that ships a mobile app announces it on its own site, so the download link appears there before anyone finds it in a store.

Two signals are worth checking when you next look. The first is a download link on chat.z.ai. The second is a store listing whose developer name reads Z.AI or Zhipu rather than a third party. That developer field separates a real client from the lookalikes above.

Until one of those shows up, treat every Z.AI app download you find as somebody else's product, and open chat.z.ai in your browser instead.
