OpenAI hasn't announced a product called ChatGPT 6, so there's no confirmed feature list. The model people are usually referring to is Astra, and OpenAI hasn't said what version number it will launch under.

Astra is OpenAI's next major model, with published results and a documented safety pause. "ChatGPT 6" is simply the name people have attached to it, not an official product name.

Is GPT-6 Out?

No. OpenAI has not released a model called GPT-6 and has not announced one.

The current OpenAI generation is GPT-5.6, generally available since July 2026 in three tiers: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Anyone can buy those today through the API, with no waitlist.

The next major model is Astra, announced on August 1, 2026 and not yet released. Whether Astra becomes GPT-6, GPT-5.7, or keeps its own name is a decision OpenAI has not published, so nobody can date a GPT-6 launch.

Only One Name for the Next Model Came from OpenAI

Astra is the only name for the next model that OpenAI has used in public. It appeared in OpenAI's own research post on August 1, 2026, described there as its next major model.

GPT-6 and GPT-5.7 both come from reporting rather than from OpenAI. GPT-5.7 would place Astra inside the existing GPT-5 series, while GPT-6 would open a new one. Vendors handle deprecation and pricing differently across a generation boundary.

Other codenames circulate in Google search suggestions, including Doug. OpenAI has used none of them in a publication.

• GPT-6 — from reporting and search behaviour. Not confirmed by OpenAI, so a GPT-6 feature list cannot be sourced.

What Is Sourced and What Is Rumour

Four claims about the next OpenAI model can be traced to OpenAI or to an outlet that spoke to OpenAI. Everything else circulating is inference.

The sourced set is narrow and it is all capability and safety, with nothing about the product. There is a research result, a risk classification, a training pause, and a statement about limited access at launch.

The rumoured set holds the product details, which is the opposite of what a buyer needs. Prices, context windows, and dates all lack a source.

• Sourced — a safety evaluation on August 7, 2026 placed Astra at the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold.

• Sourced — on September 2, 2026 OpenAI said advanced capabilities will go to selected early testers rather than to everyone.
• Rumour — any ChatGPT 6 price, subscription tier, context window, parameter count, or release date. OpenAI has published none of them.

What OpenAI Has Described the Next Model Doing

OpenAI has described Astra as aimed at long-running work that several agents share, rather than at single-turn answers. Its published evidence for that is the mathematics result, where the model worked through problems that had been open for years.

One capability claim is worth separating out, because it stopped the launch. OpenAI's own evaluation put Astra above GPT-5.6 Sol on vulnerability identification and exploit development while using fewer tokens, and that finding triggered the Critical classification.

ChatGPT 6 Price and Access

No price exists for ChatGPT 6, because OpenAI has neither announced the product nor published rates for Astra. Any figure you find is invented.

The one access detail OpenAI has given points away from a normal consumer launch. Advanced capabilities go to selected early testers first, so a $20 subscription tier appearing on day one is not what OpenAI has described.

GPT-5.6 has published rates you can plan against. Sol runs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output. Terra is $2 and $12, and Luna is $0.20 and $1.20 after the July 30, 2026 cuts. Current figures are on OpenAI's API pricing page.
