What Is ChatGPT Edu? Pricing and Student Access

How universities buy ChatGPT Edu from OpenAI, and how students get access.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Oct 1, 2026

ChatGPT Edu is an institutional plan that OpenAI sells directly to colleges and universities. Campus agreements fund the software. Enrolled students receive access only when their institution holds an active deployment contract.

OpenAI's pages offer no individual sign-up for ChatGPT Edu. A student looking for a ChatGPT Edu login should ask the school's IT help desk how that campus signs students in.

Without campus coverage, a student has three individual routes: four free months of ChatGPT Plus for eligible U.S. students, $100 in Codex credits, or a paid Go or Plus plan. OpenAI keeps institutional pricing unlisted, requiring campus administrators to negotiate directly with sales representatives.

What ChatGPT Edu Is and Who Pays for It

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Edu on May 30, 2024. The official launch announcement describes it as an institutional version of ChatGPT built for universities to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) to students, faculty, and researchers.

On its official pricing page, OpenAI calls ChatGPT Edu an affordable plan that lets universities deploy AI across campus communities. OpenAI does not publish an official price for ChatGPT Edu. Universities must contact OpenAI sales representatives directly to receive a quote.

Students do not pay OpenAI for this service. Whether a university adds an internal technology fee to tuition billing remains a local campus decision.

OpenAI sells ChatGPT Edu to universities, and pricing comes from a direct sales quote.

Student Access and Account Setup

Student access to a ChatGPT Edu account requires an active university agreement. OpenAI operates no public enrollment form for this academic tier.

To check availability, ask your university information technology (IT) help desk or read its software pages. If your school has ChatGPT Edu, those pages or the help desk explain how students sign in.

If your school has no agreement, OpenAI's pages offer no other way into ChatGPT Edu. Students in that position can still use the 2026 Back to School offer or buy ChatGPT Go or Plus.

  • Search your university software catalog for campus AI licenses.
  • Contact your campus IT help desk to confirm whether an institutional contract exists.
  • Ask the help desk how students sign in to the school's ChatGPT Edu workspace.
  • Ask whether students, faculty, or both are covered.

Individual Student Options Without Institutional Access

Students at schools without a ChatGPT Edu contract can explore alternative offers. The primary option is the ChatGPT Back to School offer. This promotion grants four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including access to ChatGPT Work.

OpenAI advertises this promotion as an $80 value. Four months of Plus at $20 each is that $80. Eligibility requires full-time or part-time enrollment in an eligible United States (U.S.) degree-granting college or graduate program. OpenAI uses SheerID to verify enrollment status during registration.

Codex credits are a second individual route. OpenAI offers $100 in Codex credits to verified university students in the United States and Canada. These technical credits expire 12 months after the grant.

Standard retail subscriptions remain available when promotions end. The standard ChatGPT Plus plan costs $20 per month billed monthly. For lower budgets, ChatGPT Go costs $8 per month in the United States. OpenAI lists no student offer for the Go plan. Over 12 months, Plus costs $240 and Go costs $96. You can evaluate our comparison of ChatGPT Go vs Plus or review our guide to the ChatGPT student discount to check current consumer pricing.

  • Eligible students must claim the Back to School offer by October 31, 2026.
  • Registration requires a payment method.
  • The plan renews automatically at $20 per month once the four free billing periods conclude, so a full first year costs $160.
  • Cancelling during the four-month promotional period forfeits remaining free months.
  • Subscriptions billed through Apple App Store or Google Play are ineligible.

ChatGPT Edu Compared to Other Educational and Retail Plans

ChatGPT Edu differs from OpenAI's other plans in who buys it: a university signs a contract, while Plus and Go go on one person's card. OpenAI does not publish Edu's admin features or limits, so the comparison below rests on buyer and price.

The university and K-12 programs are separate. ChatGPT for Teachers serves verified U.S. Kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) educators. It does not cover university faculty or college lecturers.

OpenAI's own pages give two end dates for ChatGPT for Teachers. The help article says the plan is free through June 2028, while the FAQ on the ChatGPT pricing page lists June 2027. Examine our guide to ChatGPT for Teachers for verification criteria. If you manage multi-user business accounts, compare ChatGPT Team vs Plus vs Enterprise to review team workspace features.

Evaluating ChatGPT Edu Capabilities and Limits

OpenAI does not publicly document specific model quotas, administrative tooling, or data retention policies for ChatGPT Edu. A university learns Edu's limits only through OpenAI sales.

Judge ChatGPT Edu on the written terms OpenAI sales offers, because OpenAI does not publish Edu contract terms.

When negotiating with OpenAI sales, university committees should request written documentation covering four operational areas.

  • Daily and weekly message quotas allocated to each student and faculty seat.
  • Which models the contract includes, for example whether it covers the model in our GPT-6 Astra for education analysis.
  • Data privacy terms specifying whether student inputs and research prompts train OpenAI foundation models.
  • Identity integration options, administrative audit logs, and centralized license provisioning tools.

Institutional Decision Factors for University Leaders

University technology leaders must weigh ChatGPT Edu against competing academic solutions. Anthropic sells an institutional option titled Claude for Education. Anthropic describes its product as a university-wide plan for institutions, including students, faculty, and administrative staff. Anthropic also withholds public pricing and requires direct contact with its education sales team. You can evaluate Anthropic's academic package in our Claude for Education guide.

ChatGPT Edu does not serve every educational audience. Independent tutors, test prep businesses, and private academies are not the buyers OpenAI sells Edu to. These commercial educators should use retail plans or ChatGPT Team and Enterprise accounts instead.

Our verdict would change if OpenAI published a per-seat ChatGPT Edu price, because a department could then budget for it without waiting on a sales quote.

Before spending personal funds, check your campus IT software directory to confirm whether your institution provides an active account. If your university leadership is evaluating an institutional rollout, contact sales through the official ChatGPT pricing page to request quotes. Confirm specific usage quotas and data protection terms before approving a campus ChatGPT Edu deployment.
