What Do Free ChatGPT Users Get with GPT-6?
Which GPT-6 model each ChatGPT plan uses, and what the sources do not say.
ChatGPT Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab, along with Intelligent UI. Free and Go were scheduled to start receiving it on October 8, 2026.
Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans use GPT-6 Sol instead. The new interface can add interactive charts, calculators and diagrams to an answer. The sources cited here do not state message caps for Free accounts.
Intelligent UI appears when OpenAI's system judges that the format fits the question, and an answer can stay plain text. OpenAI says users will be able to reduce the amount of visual material in responses.
What Free and Go Users Get With GPT-6
Free and Go users were scheduled to get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab starting October 8, 2026, alongside interactive components known as Intelligent UI. Paid tiers use GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI began the rollout on October 7, 2026, starting globally in the Chat tab for paid plans.
Let's Data Science and TechCrunch report the rollout schedule. The update applies to the Chat experience. It does not change the models that power Work or Codex.
- Free and Go: get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab, with Intelligent UI, from October 8, 2026
- Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise: use GPT-6 Sol in the Chat tab, rollout starting October 7, 2026, and Enterprise availability can depend on an administrator's settings
- Work and Codex: model allocations are unchanged
What Intelligent UI Is and What It Shows
Intelligent UI adds charts, buttons, forms and task-specific tools to a response when OpenAI determines that the format fits the question. OpenAI's own examples were comparisons, explanatory diagrams, maps and calculators. A response can stay plain text when that is the clearest format. TechCrunch's Lucas Ropek described several examples shown in the briefing.
Those briefing demonstrations included diagrams explaining how an airplane wing generates lift, visual guides for recipes, and diagrams of bicycle mechanics. TechCrunch also described tappable buttons, interactive charts, editable graphs and a customized calculator for a specific task. The briefing also showed a map for a multi-day hiking trip and a personal savings calculator. OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan said "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface" and that "the most helpful answers aren't just text".
OpenAI's stated goal, per TechCrunch, is to make "learning complex topics easier". OpenAI says users will be able to reduce the amount of visual material in responses.
Account Availability and Rollout Timing
Account availability for GPT-6 Luna and Intelligent UI follows a phased schedule across global user accounts. OpenAI began the rollout on October 7, 2026, starting globally in the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, which use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go plans, which use GPT-6 Luna, were scheduled to begin receiving the update on October 8, 2026. Enterprise availability can depend on an administrator's settings.
A secondary report from Notebookcheck states that these releases replace the earlier GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna systems in Chat. The other sources cited here do not name the models being replaced. Because distribution occurs gradually, availability depends on your account's rollout state. The sources describe no menu, badge or setting that shows whether your account has GPT-6 Luna yet. They say only that rollout is phased and that how useful each interactive answer is depends on the request and on the rollout state of your account. If an answer arrives as plain text, that can be the clearest format for the question rather than a sign that the update is missing.
What GPT-6 Luna Is and What It Costs Developers
GPT-6 Luna is the lightweight, lowest-cost tier of the GPT-6 family. OpenAI introduced Luna alongside GPT-6 Sol in September 2026, as documented in the OpenAI release announcement. On the application programming interface (API), Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens.
Those developer token rates reflect a 50 percent reduction on input tokens and a 58.3 percent cut on output tokens relative to GPT-5.6 Luna. These are developer API rates. They are not what a Free or Go subscriber pays. The GPT-6 Luna explainer covers the model in more detail.
On AutomationBench 1.0.6 (47 business tools across sales, HR and finance), OpenAI reports GPT-6 Luna scored 5.4 percentage points higher than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI also reports a 58 percent cut in cost per task at high reasoning effort. API rate limits for Luna are in the GPT-6 Luna limits guide. ChatGPT message limits for Free and Go are not published in the sources.
Comparative Evaluations Against Claude Haiku 5.5
On October 7, 2026, Anthropic published comparative performance figures on its Claude Haiku 5.5 launch page.
In those tests, Claude Haiku 5.5 scored 72.4 percent on the OSWorld 2.1 offline subset, while GPT-6 Luna reached 48.9 percent. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Haiku 5.5 recorded 39.2 percent compared to 16.4 percent for Luna. Those tests used Anthropic's own setup, and the figures come from a competitor's page. They are not an independent evaluation.
The full head-to-head is in the Claude Haiku 5.5 versus GPT-6 Luna comparison, and more Luna results are in the GPT-6 Luna benchmarks guide.
What the Sources Do Not Say About Free Access
The sources cited here do not state message caps for Free accounts, a price for the Go plan, or any Luna usage limits inside ChatGPT. They also do not say whether Free users can pick Sol, whether Free gets a thinking mode, or what the context window is in ChatGPT.
For plan prices, see the ChatGPT pricing guide. The GPT-6 Luna pricing guide covers developer rates, which are not what a Free or Go subscriber pays.
What Would Change the Case for Paying for GPT-6 Sol Access
Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise are the plans that use GPT-6 Sol in Chat. Free and Go use Luna.
The GPT-6 Sol explainer and GPT-6 Sol pricing guide cover Sol in detail.
If OpenAI publishes Luna message caps, or lets Free accounts use Sol, the case for paying would change. As of October 2026, neither is published in the sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Free ChatGPT users were scheduled to get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab starting October 8, 2026, depending on their account's rollout state. Paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use the GPT-6 Sol model instead.
- Free and Go accounts were scheduled to get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab starting October 8, 2026. The rollout is phased, so whether you have it yet depends on your account's rollout state. The sources describe no setting to turn it on.
- GPT-6 is rolling out in the Chat tab. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans use GPT-6 Sol, and Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. Access depends on each account's rollout state, and Enterprise availability can depend on an administrator's settings.
- Yes, Intelligent UI works on the Free plan alongside GPT-6 Luna. Availability depends on your account's rollout state. It displays interactive tools such as charts, forms, calculators, and diagrams when OpenAI's system judges the format fits the question.
- The sources describe a way to reduce visuals. They do not describe a way to turn them off. OpenAI says users will be able to reduce the amount of visual material in responses, a customization like other aspects of ChatGPT's personality. Responses can also stay plain text when that is the clearest format. The sources do not say where the control is or whether it is live yet.
