How to Take ChatGPT Meeting Notes With the Meetings Plugin
Setup steps and plan limits for OpenAI's Meetings plugin, plus where the older Record mode still fits.
ChatGPT's own meeting note-taker is the Meetings plugin, a beta feature in the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS for Pro and Business plans as of October 2026. It takes notes from your Mac's microphone and system audio and saves a personalized summary with suggested action items, "without a bot joining the call." Your own notes stay on the same page as the summary. That page is private unless you share it.
The Meetings plugin functions separately from the older ChatGPT Record mode released in 2025. Record runs from the Record button at the bottom of any chat and saves its summaries as canvases in chat history. Meetings saves notes as pages in ChatGPT Space and adds context from connected apps you've authorized. You can review and edit each suggested action item, then start it with one click to have ChatGPT work on it.
OpenAI does not list Plus, Go, or Free plans for Meetings. Its own pages disagree on Enterprise. The release notes say "Enterprise coming soon," while the Meetings help article describes a limited alpha.
How to Take Meeting Notes in ChatGPT
To take meeting notes in ChatGPT, install the Meetings plugin from Plugins in the sidebar of the ChatGPT desktop app on your Mac, then allow microphone and system audio access when prompted. The plugin captures local spoken dialogue through the computer microphone and incoming remote participant audio through system audio channels. This design allows users to record conversations in person or across web conferencing applications without sending an external attendee bot to the call.
Meetings creates notes after the audio has uploaded and finished processing. This process may take a few minutes after you stop. Find the notes under Meetings in the sidebar or on their pages in ChatGPT Space.
- Open the ChatGPT desktop application on macOS and navigate to Plugins in the sidebar.
- Locate Meetings in the directory, install the plugin, and proceed through the initial onboarding screens.
- Grant the application access to the microphone and system audio when prompted by macOS security settings.
- Open Meetings in the sidebar and click Take notes when a call begins.
- Add personal text notes on the meeting page during the conversation.
- Click Stop taking notes when the discussion ends to allow OpenAI servers to process the audio.
ChatGPT Meeting Notes Plan Eligibility and Platform Support
The Meetings plugin is available in beta exclusively on the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS across Pro and Business subscription plans. OpenAI listed the plugin under the September 29, 2026 entry in the ChatGPT release notes, while Inc. reported on October 7, 2026 that OpenAI released it "on Tuesday," which points to October 6, 2026. OpenAI states that support for Microsoft Windows, Apple iOS, and Google Android devices is coming soon.
On Business plans, ChatGPT Space and the Meetings plugin both have to be enabled for your workspace. OpenAI says to contact your workspace administrator if either is disabled. For ChatGPT Enterprise, the Meetings help article says Meetings is not generally available yet and is being tested with a limited group of customers through an alpha program. Ask your account manager about joining it. The September 29 release notes say only "Enterprise coming soon."
The older Record mode is documented separately on the ChatGPT Record help page. That page disagrees with itself. Its overview note says Record is available for Plus, Enterprise, Edu, Business, and Pro workspaces, in the macOS desktop app only. Its banner says "Available in beta on Mac to Pro and Business users." This appears to describe the Meetings plugin. The page now opens by pointing readers to the Meetings plugin in the new ChatGPT desktop app.
ChatGPT Space Organization and Action Item Automation
Meeting notes automatically save to ChatGPT Space as structured documents combining transcript summaries, personal notes, and suggested action items. ChatGPT Space, released in the same September 29, 2026 update, "brings your Pages, files, and related work together in ChatGPT" and is available to eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in the desktop app and on the web. Summaries generated by the Meetings plugin reside on dedicated pages. They remain private to the user unless deliberately shared.
Meetings uses ChatGPT Work and relevant context from connected apps you've authorized to enrich the summary and suggest follow-up action items. Inc. names Gmail and Slack as examples of those apps. Users can review, edit, or execute these suggestions. With a single click, they can compose follow-up email drafts or update existing project plans.
You can also ask ChatGPT questions about your meetings. OpenAI's examples include "What was discussed in our team's sync today?" and "When did I agree to schedule the follow-up with John in our last meeting?" OpenAI advises individuals to review important details before relying on the notes or sharing them.
- Preserves personal notes alongside automated AI summaries on the same page.
- Adds context from connected apps you've authorized to the summary (Inc. names Gmail and Slack as examples).
- Suggests action items, such as drafting an email or updating a project plan, that you can start with one click.
- Permits natural-language search across historical meeting records stored within ChatGPT Space.
Participant Consent Rules and Audio Data Retention
For Meetings, OpenAI tells you to tell everyone in the meeting you'll be taking notes and get everyone's consent before you start. The consent reminder in the app is visible only to you, and OpenAI says it "does not notify other participants or obtain their consent for you." For older Record mode, OpenAI tells users to check local laws before recording others. OpenAI says "You're responsible for making sure that your use of record mode follows applicable laws."
The desktop app streams microphone and system audio from your Mac to OpenAI to generate the notes. Once your notes are ready, OpenAI says the audio is deleted from your Mac and OpenAI's servers. That audio can't be replayed. If you're offline or processing is incomplete, the audio may stay on your Mac for a while as it waits to upload or finish processing.
Meeting pages are private by default. When you share a meeting page, the people you share it with can access the notes but not the transcript. In addition, automated shutdown rules stop recordings. They trigger when the laptop lid closes, when silence persists for an extended period, or when a continuous session reaches four hours.
Audio Upload Features and Manual Transcript Formatting
Paid ChatGPT subscribers without the Meetings plugin can upload a meeting recording instead. On October 6, 2026, OpenAI introduced native audio uploads in ChatGPT for paid subscriptions and workspace accounts. Upload pre-recorded audio files directly into chat threads. ChatGPT generates transcripts, compiles summaries, and drafts follow-up correspondence.
For a transcript exported from another meeting tool, paste it into a chat. Name the sections you want back. For example, enter: "List the decisions made, the open questions, and each action item with its owner."
The older Record mode is another macOS route. Click the Record button at the bottom of any chat. ChatGPT live-transcribes the meeting and saves its summary as a canvas in your chat history. You can turn that canvas into a project plan, an email, or code. Record sessions cap at 4 hours (240 minutes). If you delete the conversation, its canvas and transcript are removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days unless OpenAI is legally required to keep them. OpenAI says it does not use Record audio to train its models. Transcripts and canvases from Pro, Plus, or Free users with "Improve the model for everyone" turned on may be used for training. Content from Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces is excluded by default.
- Upload exported audio files directly into ChatGPT to generate summaries and ask questions about call contents.
- Paste text transcripts into chat windows using structured prompts to format decisions and action items.
- Use interactive canvases to turn summaries into outputs like project plans, emails, or code.
Alternative Software for ChatGPT Meeting Notes Workflows
Inc. reports that Otter.ai "can join as an external participant," while OpenAI says Meetings works "without a bot joining the call." Meetings runs only on macOS as of October 2026, and it starts when you click Take notes or accept its offer after it detects a call.
Meetings does not fit teams on Windows or on ChatGPT Plus. OpenAI lists neither as of October 2026. For the older Record mode, calendar auto-join supports Google Meet links only, so Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other meeting links have to be started manually.
Inc. reports that Granola also works "without hopping on the call" and raised $125 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in March 2026. The Granola alternatives guide and Granola vs Otter comparison cover Granola and similar note-takers. Note-takers that join calls on their own are compared in Otter AI alternatives and best AI note takers for meetings.
The same September 29 release notes that list the Meetings plugin also list "Meet your dot." It is covered in ChatGPT dots explained. Meetings becomes an option for Windows and Plus users if OpenAI ships the Windows, iOS, and Android versions it lists as "coming soon," or adds Plus to the Meetings plan list.
