Claude for Nonprofits: Seat Prices and Who Qualifies
Anthropic's discount of up to 75% for verified nonprofits, and how to roll it out.
Yes, Anthropic offers an artificial intelligence (AI) discount of up to 75% on paid workplace tiers through Claude for Nonprofits. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized teams, and every rollout we have done starts with the seat count. The discount covers Team and Enterprise plans only, so individual Pro accounts pay full price.
The initiative lowers Claude Team to $8 per user per month and Claude Enterprise to $10. Anthropic verifies nonprofit status through its partner Goodstack. Higher education institutions and political campaigns cannot get these rates.
For a nonprofit with one heavy user, the 2-seat Team minimum at $8 a seat comes to $16 a month. That is less than one Claude Pro seat at $20 billed monthly or $17 billed annually.
What the Claude Nonprofit Discount Costs
A verified nonprofit pays $8 per user per month for Claude Team or $10 per user per month for Claude Enterprise.
Anthropic requires a minimum purchase of 2 seats on the Team plan for organizations with fewer than 150 members. That sets your base operational expense at $16 per month.
The minimum seat threshold for the Enterprise tier is not published by Anthropic.
Standard Claude pricing provides useful context for these discounted rates. Anthropic lists Claude Pro at $17 per month billed annually ($200 upfront) or $20 billed monthly on the Claude pricing page. Standard Enterprise access costs $20 per seat per month plus usage billed at application programming interface (API) rates.
| Plan | Nonprofit Price | Seat Minimum | Verification Partner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Team | $8 per user per month | 2 seats for teams under 150 | Goodstack |
| Claude Enterprise | $10 per user per month | Not published | Goodstack |
| Claude Pro | Standard pricing only ($17 to $20/month) | 1 user | Not eligible for nonprofit rate |
Eligible Organizations and Excluded Groups
Claude for Nonprofits accepts 501(c)(3) organizations, kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) schools, and qualifying healthcare organizations. Anthropic's Claude for Nonprofits tutorial names no other eligible categories. A K-12 school qualifies under that list, while a university does not, even when both are nonprofits.
Anthropic explicitly excludes government agencies, political campaigns, higher education institutions, and healthcare systems. The boundary between qualifying healthcare organizations and excluded healthcare systems is not defined in Anthropic's published documentation. If your organization sits near the line between a qualifying healthcare organization and a healthcare system, raise it with Goodstack during verification before you budget for seats.
Higher education institutions cannot use Claude for Nonprofits. Colleges and universities must explore Claude for Education, a university-wide plan for students, faculty and staff. Anthropic has not released public pricing for that university plan. You can read our guide to Claude for Education for rollout context.
Scientists at academic and nonprofit research institutions around the world qualify for a separate initiative. Anthropic states that these researchers can access Claude at no cost to start through its education solutions portal.
Application Steps and Verification Through Goodstack
Validation for the Team plan takes 2 to 3 minutes according to the official Anthropic tutorial. The processing window for Enterprise validation is not published.
Your discounted rate remains active as long as your organization maintains its nonprofit status. Anthropic does not state what happens if an organization loses its nonprofit standing. Anthropic also has not published whether organizations must submit annual re-verification filings to keep their rate.
- 1. Choose your plan: decide whether your staff needs the Claude Team tier or the Claude Enterprise tier based on team size and administrative needs.
- 2. Verify your nonprofit status through Goodstack. Team validation takes 2 to 3 minutes, and Anthropic does not publish which documents Goodstack asks for.
- 3. Complete seat checkout: after receiving approval, purchase your seats while maintaining the two-seat minimum if adopting Team.
Choosing Between Team and Enterprise Plans
On price alone, Claude Team at $8 per user per month is the cheaper of the two nonprofit plans.
The price difference between the two tiers is $2 per user per month. That equals $24 per user each year. For a team of 10 people, Enterprise adds $240 to your annual software bill.
At 2 seats, Team costs $16 a month and Enterprise costs $20, a $48 gap over a year.
Anthropic's nonprofit materials do not list feature differences between the two plans. Because standard Enterprise costs $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates on the Claude pricing page, the $10 nonprofit rate is half the standard seat fee. For 10 seats, that is $100 a month in seat fees against $200 at the standard rate, and Anthropic does not say whether nonprofit Enterprise seats also carry usage charges.
Claude vs OpenAI for Nonprofits
Anthropic and OpenAI both offer up to 75% discounts for eligible nonprofit groups, but their seat rules and billing terms differ.
OpenAI offers ChatGPT Business Standard at $8 per user per month when billed annually, or $10 per user per month when billed monthly, according to the OpenAI nonprofit policy. OpenAI excludes ChatGPT Business Premium seats from any discount. OpenAI also offers up to 75% off ChatGPT Enterprise through its sales team.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI use Goodstack to validate nonprofit credentials. OpenAI does not publish seat minimums for its discounted tiers, whereas Anthropic sets a 2-seat minimum for Team deployments under 150 members. For a 5-person team, Claude Team comes to $40 a month, the same as 5 ChatGPT Business Standard seats billed annually and $10 less than 5 seats billed monthly.

Rolling Out Claude Without Budget Waste
Deploying Claude effectively begins with a small pilot team rather than purchasing seats for your entire staff. A 2-seat Team pilot costs $192 over 12 months.
That entry cost allows your leadership to test donor communications, grant draft workflows, and meeting summaries before buying additional licenses.
Establish clear internal governance before giving staff access to Claude. Staff members must know what data can be shared with language models. You should adapt our nonprofit AI policy template to define rules for volunteer access, donor privacy, and constituent records.

Governance Constraints and When to Skip Claude
Claude for Nonprofits does not fit every organization. Four kinds of organization are excluded outright.
Government agencies, political campaigns, higher education institutions, and healthcare systems cannot get the discount. Of those four, only higher education has its own Anthropic route, Claude for Education. The others buy Claude at the prices on the Claude pricing page.
Our recommendation would change if Anthropic publishes a nonprofit API rate or drops the two-seat minimum on the Team tier. If you need API access, Anthropic publishes no nonprofit API rate, so budget from the standard rates on the Claude pricing page.
Anthropic does not publish details regarding low-income country discounts, eligibility outside the listed categories, or usage limits per nonprofit seat. Check the Anthropic news release for program updates. If you are outside the US, raise it with Goodstack at verification, following Anthropic's Claude for Nonprofits tutorial.
Verify your organization with Goodstack, then start with a two-seat pilot on Claude Team.
