Google AI Edge Foresight as an Offline Granola Alternative

How Google's on-device Mac note-taker works and where it stands against Granola.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Oct 10, 2026

In early October 2026, Google introduced Google AI Edge Foresight, an experimental application for macOS that transcribes and summarizes meetings entirely on-device. It fits people on Apple Silicon Macs who want meeting audio, transcripts, and notes to stay on their own computer. The Verge reports it is free to use. Google's own page does not state a price, however.

Google AI Edge Foresight pairs Google DeepMind's EmbeddingGemma 2 model with Gemma 4 to run local Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines without network latency. Foresight transcribes speech and searches your files on your Mac instead of calling a cloud API.

TechCrunch headlined it "a new local-first Granola competitor." The Verge compared it to "AI note-taking apps like Granola." TechCrunch points to the shared split-screen layout, with your shorthand notes on one side and AI-generated notes on the other.

Capabilities of Google AI Edge Foresight

Google AI Edge Foresight is a Granola-style meeting note-taker that runs entirely on your Mac. It transcribes the meeting, turns your shorthand bullets into polished notes, and can search your own files without cloud indexing. As documented on the Google AI Edge developer portal, Foresight runs in the background during video calls on Zoom or Google Meet, as well as during in-person discussions. Users jot shorthand bullet points during conversations. Foresight then uses the meeting transcript to expand those bullets into organized summaries.

Google AI Edge Foresight integrates local reference materials into its meeting summaries. Users can point Google AI Edge Foresight to project folders, diagrams, calendars, and connected Google Drive directories. Supported file formats include Portable Document Format (PDF) files, Google Docs, Microsoft Office files, plain text documents, Markdown files, and web bookmarks. Users can categorize sources with custom labels and filter materials by category. They can search across thousands of pages in milliseconds without cloud indexing.

A live assistance mode listens during active discussions. It answers questions and presents proactive context cards with citations. You can also ask the built-in chat questions, and it answers from your connected documents. Google says all AI inference runs locally and that "your personal knowledge sources, meeting audio, and notes never leave your computer." On-Device Architecture and Model Infrastructure

Local execution in Google AI Edge Foresight relies on a combination of Google DeepMind's EmbeddingGemma 2 model for vector retrieval and Gemma 4 for generative reasoning. Published reports initially described the underlying models differently. The Verge and 9to5Google described the app as running on EmbeddingGemma 2. Google's developer page says EmbeddingGemma 2 is "Combined with Gemma 4" for its on-device RAG pipeline, and TechCrunch describes the chat as a "Gemma 4-powered assistant."

Google's EmbeddingGemma 2 announcement says the model has 740 million parameters and is released under an Apache 2.0 license. EmbeddingGemma 2 is modular, with as little as 270 million parameters for text-only work plus optional vision (170 million) and audio (300 million) encoders. Its 8K-token context window handles up to 5.5 minutes of audio, 29 images, or 58 video frames. Google reports its MTEB Code score rose from 68.76 to 78.68. That is a 9.92-point gain.

The model uses Matryoshka Representation Learning to compress vector embeddings from 768 dimensions down to 512, 256, or 128 dimensions, achieving up to sixfold storage reductions. With quantization on a Google Pixel 11 Pro, Google says EmbeddingGemma 2 needs as little as about 191MB of active RAM for text-only weights. The full multimodal model needs about 567MB on a Google Pixel 11 Pro. Google does not publish Foresight's own RAM needs on a Mac. Both the embedding engine and the generative model run locally, permitting complete operation in air-gapped secure facilities, remote locations, and airplanes.

Setup Requirements and Platform Availability

Google says Foresight is optimized for Apple Silicon Macs and does not say whether Intel Macs work. The only download on Google's page is a "Download for macOS" button, which serves a .dmg disk image hosted on dl.google.com. The Verge reports the app is free to use. Google's page lists ai-edge-support@google.com as the support contact.

Google states that Foresight uses lightweight Gemma quantization and memory-efficient vector kernels to maintain low battery consumption on Apple Silicon laptops. Users can point Foresight to local folders and connect Google Drive with minimal setup. Files indexed through Foresight remain stored on the local computer rather than syncing to external servers.

9to5Google reports that Foresight joins Google's two other Mac apps in the AI Edge family: AI Edge Gallery and AI Edge Eloquent, an offline transcription app. TechCrunch adds that the same team released an experimental AI dictation tool in April that worked with local models. Google offers no Windows, Linux, or mobile version of Foresight.

Comparison Between Foresight and Granola

Coverage separates Foresight from Granola-style apps by where it runs, and The Verge says it "stands out amongst a growing number of AI note-taking apps by operating on-device." As observed by TechCrunch, both applications share a split-screen interface where users type manual notes on one side while automated artificial intelligence summaries populate the other.

TechCrunch places Foresight in a crowded field. Wispr and Calendly have each released a note-taker. Superhuman acquired note-taker Fathom the month before TechCrunch's October 8 report. Granola's own pricing and features are compared in Granola alternatives and Granola vs Otter.

  • Pricing: The Verge reports Google AI Edge Foresight is free to use, and Google's page states no price. Granola pricing is covered in Granola alternatives.
  • Offline execution: Google AI Edge Foresight processes audio, transcripts, and embeddings 100 percent locally without internet access, while cloud tools require active network connections.
  • Platform support: Google AI Edge Foresight is offered only as a macOS download optimized for Apple Silicon, with no Windows, Linux, or mobile version. For Granola's platforms, see Granola alternatives.
  • Knowledge grounding: Google AI Edge Foresight links local PDFs, office documents, markdown files, and Google Drive directly into an on-device vector database.
  • Sharing workflows: Foresight stores notes and files strictly on the host Mac; for Granola sharing features, see Granola alternatives.

Technical Limitations and Unconfirmed Specifications

Google leaves several technical parameters and operational boundaries for Google AI Edge Foresight unconfirmed. The developer documentation does not publish the minimum macOS version, required system memory, or installer file size. Google specifies optimization for Apple Silicon. That leaves compatibility for Intel-based Mac hardware unverified.

Google does not publish the specific speech-to-text model that generates meeting transcripts. Google also does not list supported transcription languages. No open-source repository for Foresight has been found, and Google does not say whether it is open source.

The Verge calls Foresight "an experimental note-taking app." TechCrunch's Ivan Mehta speculated that Google could release a cloud-based consumer note-taker through its Gemini apps. Google has announced no such product.

Google does not publish minimum RAM requirements, Intel Mac support, or supported transcription languages for Google AI Edge Foresight. Test it with sample audio on your own Mac before relying on it in a real meeting.

Deployment Fit and Evaluation Criteria

Google AI Edge Foresight fits individual knowledge workers who operate Apple Silicon Macs and require private, offline meeting transcription. It serves users in air-gapped secure facilities and travelers needing transcription without internet access. Users can point Foresight at local folders containing reference PDFs and Markdown files. Its chat can answer from those files.

Google AI Edge Foresight is a poor fit for teams that require collaborative workspace sharing or multi-user cloud synchronization. It does not support Windows or Linux operating systems. That excludes organizations with mixed device fleets. Google does not list supported transcription languages, so test it in the languages your meetings use before relying on it.

This assessment would change if Google introduces a Windows build, releases cloud synchronization features, or restricts the free availability of Google AI Edge Foresight. To evaluate Foresight for your workflow, download the disk image from the Google AI Edge developer portal. Test shorthand enrichment during a live discussion.
