How AI Is Changing Ecommerce Shopping and Checkout

Shopify, Google and OpenAI each document how assistants read merchant catalogs and feeds and complete checkout.

AI assistants now find products directly from merchant catalogs and feeds and can complete purchases through open protocols. Catalog data quality decides store visibility. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI workflows inside small and mid-sized business teams, so the order of steps below puts catalog data before software purchases.

Shopify says products are discoverable in ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with an in-app browser purchase. Google describes checkout through its Universal Commerce Protocol, and OpenAI documents product feeds and an Agentic Checkout Spec.

For an online merchant, the first operational priority is fixing structured catalog data and checking platform channel permissions before investing in standalone software tools.

What Changed in How Shoppers Find and Buy Products

Shopify, Google and OpenAI each document channels that start from structured product data. Checkout runs through an in-app browser, an open protocol, or a merchant-implemented specification.

Three documented initiatives show how major software ecosystems connect merchant products to artificial intelligence interfaces. The table below outlines what each system documents, the technical requirements for merchants, and the primary source reference.

Under Shopify and Google specifications, the merchant remains the Merchant of Record, and Shopify explicitly states that merchants keep customer data. The technical change centers on how catalog information reaches the model and how checkout sessions begin.

Shopify Merchants Are Discoverable in ChatGPT by Default

Merchants on Shopify can sell directly to ChatGPT users through Agentic Storefronts without installing third-party applications. Per Shopify's 2026-03-24 post, products became discoverable by default via Shopify Catalog starting the week of March 24, 2026. Products are discoverable by default with no separate apps or integrations required.

When a shopper discovers a product inside ChatGPT on a mobile device, payment takes place within an in-app browser without leaving the chat session. On a desktop browser, ChatGPT opens the merchant's store in a separate tab to complete the transaction. Merchant customizations, including pricing logic, payment methods, and checkout settings, carry over into the purchase flow.

Shopify's 2026-03-24 text states that merchants pay no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates. Orders appear directly inside the Shopify admin dashboard marked with ChatGPT referral attribution, while the store stays the Merchant of Record.

Beyond ChatGPT, Shopify documents broader platform distribution across conversational tools. Thousands of merchants already sell through Microsoft Copilot, while select brands sell in Google AI Mode and the Gemini application via UCP. Shopify states that UCP will also power checkout in select Meta experiences in the future, though that integration is not live as of the published notice.

How Google Describes Agentic Checkout

Google defines the Universal Commerce Protocol as an open-source standard designed to power discovery, checkout, and order management across agentic applications. Published on the Google Developers Blog on January 11, 2026, the standard establishes a technical bridge between autonomous software agents and retail commerce platforms.

Merchants participating in UCP publish their store capabilities through a machine-readable JSON manifest hosted at the standardized endpoint /.well-known/ucp. Collaborators named in the specification include Shopify and large retailers, alongside more than 20 commercial partners that endorse the framework.

Under UCP, participating businesses remain the Merchant of Record for all completed transactions. To participate in Google's implementation across conversational interfaces, a merchant must maintain an active account in Google Merchant Center, supply checkout-eligible products, and complete a formal merchant interest form.

What OpenAI Documents for Merchants

OpenAI provides technical specifications for merchants seeking to integrate inventory feeds and checkout actions into ChatGPT. The official OpenAI commerce documentation outlines standards for agentic checkout, delegated payment mechanisms, and product feeds.

Merchants integrate their stores by implementing the Agentic Checkout Spec. Product inventory feeds can be delivered directly through an API endpoint or uploaded via flat files using Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).

OpenAI documents that a structured feed helps ChatGPT index products and show current price and availability.

How Payment and Order Data Move Between Assistants and Stores

Assistant checkouts separate the payment instrument a shopper selects from the processor that settles the transaction. In a Google Developers Blog post dated January 11, 2026, Google explains that the Universal Commerce Protocol relies on tokenized payments and verifiable credentials between agents and business backends. Every authorization carries cryptographic proof of user consent, while the business remains the Merchant of Record.

Google documents these details:

  • Modular payment handlers in the sample manifest support shop_pay, google_pay, and a mock test handler.
  • Consumers can buy using Google Pay with payment and shipping information stored in Google Wallet.
  • Google lists discount and fulfillment as extensions of checkout, and identity linking and order management as capabilities.

What OpenAI and Shopify Document About Orders and Promotions

OpenAI divides its Agentic Commerce Protocol between store catalog feeds and processor responsibilities. In undated commerce documentation, OpenAI specifies that Payment Service Providers implement the Delegated Payment Spec to secure transactions, while merchants implement the Agentic Checkout Spec. Product data goes to OpenAI through an Application Programming Interface (API) or Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) uploads for discovery in ChatGPT, and promotions are managed through OpenAI's Promotions API.

OpenAI provides a production launch checklist and a best-practices page. Its file-upload specification recommends a full feed snapshot at least once a day, and its best-practices page says to keep price and availability variant-specific when they differ by variant. OpenAI states that product feed onboarding is currently available to approved partners. For order records, Shopify announced on March 24, 2026, that completed orders appear in Shopify admin with ChatGPT referral attribution, leaving the merchant as the merchant of record. Shopify also noted that Shop Pay is coming soon to Microsoft Copilot for instant checkout rather than live on that date.

Google's and OpenAI's designs each separate what the shopper pays with from who processes the transaction. A store planning for assistant commerce should clarify processor capabilities before configuring feed endpoints. Ask your payment provider which delegated payment handlers and protocol specifications its systems support.

What a Small Store Should Do First

In our own ordering, catalog data and feed access come first because all three documented channels start from structured product data. Our synthesis of the current specifications suggests the following four-step sequence for store operators.

For granular guidance on structuring product attributes and schema tags for search models, review our guide on AEO for ecommerce.

  • Step 1: Audit catalog data and feed access to ensure product titles, pricing, descriptions, and stock quantities are clean and structured.
  • Step 2: Check your platform's AI-channel settings to verify whether native distribution to assistants like ChatGPT or Copilot is currently active.
  • Step 3: Confirm checkout and fee terms directly on your platform's documentation page.
  • Step 4: Consider secondary support and personalization tools only after product feeds and core transaction pathways operate cleanly.

Who Should Wait and What Changes the Answer

Stores that operate outside supported platform ecosystems or lack verified product feeds should wait before altering their technical stack. Stores not on Shopify and lacking a Google Merchant Center account have fewer direct protocol options. Unaffiliated stores can either implement the file upload feed route documented by OpenAI or wait.

Stores with items outside checkout-eligible categories should also exercise caution. Google specifically requires checkout-eligible products to participate in UCP workflows.

The order of steps changes if Shopify, Google or OpenAI changes fees, checkout location or availability.
