How to Add llms.txt to Your Website on Any Platform

Exact steps to publish an llms.txt file at your site root across WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, and static hosts.

To add an llms.txt file to your website, place a plain-text Markdown file named llms.txt at your domain root so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. At Layer3Labs, we publish an llms.txt on this site and on the other sites we build and operate. You can pick a preset for your site type, fill in or import your pages, and download the finished file from our free llms.txt generator to upload with the steps below.

The setup path depends on the software running your site. Content management systems like Shopify and Wix provide automatic files that you can edit directly, while WordPress offers toggles inside common search engine optimization (SEO) plugins. On static sites and code frameworks, you put the file in the folder your site serves from its root, such as public/ on Next.js.

Where llms.txt Goes

An llms.txt file belongs at the root path of your primary domain, loading at /llms.txt. The original llms.txt proposal published by Jeremy Howard on September 3, 2024 specifies this root location. The proposal also allows placing the file in a subpath, such as /docs/llms.txt, when you want to define a specific subsection of a larger site.

The file name must be llms.txt in all lowercase letters, as noted in the WordPress.com documentation. The file itself is written in Markdown format. An H1 heading containing the project or site name is the only required part of the document.

The proposal does not name a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) content type, and serving the file as text/plain or text/markdown is common practice. When we requested /llms.txt from nine sites on October 26, 2026, eight returned the file as text and one returned a 404 web page. Specifically, layer3labs.io, llmstxt.org, webflow.com, wix.com, nextjs.org, developers.cloudflare.com, and yoast.com each responded with HTTP status 200 and a text/plain header. The Shopify store at allbirds.com responded with HTTP status 200 and a text/markdown header. The request to gymshark.com returned an HTTP 404 status containing a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document.

You can verify your own server response in a terminal by running curl -I https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Look for an HTTP 200 status code alongside a content-type header indicating text/plain or text/markdown. For example, our own file at layer3labs.io/llms.txt delivers a clean text response and passes all eight checks in our free llms.txt checker.

Run `curl -I https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt` in your terminal. Your server should return an HTTP 200 OK status code with a text/plain or text/markdown content type.

How to Add llms.txt on Each Platform

WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow and Squarespace 7.1 have a built-in llms.txt option, and code-based hosts serve the file from a root folder. The table shows where each setting or folder lives and what it requires.

WordPress Plugin Settings and Manual Upload

On self-hosted WordPress installations, you can deploy llms.txt through an established SEO plugin or by uploading the static file directly over Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). Use only one method, so your site does not end up with two competing llms.txt files.

Yoast added basic llms.txt support in version 25.3 on June 10, 2025, and introduced manual page selection in version 25.6 on July 29, 2025, as detailed in the Yoast developer changelog. The feature is included in the free version listed in the WordPress plugin directory. It is not available on WordPress multisite installations. If Yoast displays an alert that the file could not be auto-generated, review your web server file write permissions.

If you use Rank Math, open Rank Math SEO in your administration dashboard and switch on the LLMS Txt module. Next, navigate to General Settings and select Edit llms.txt, as described in the Rank Math documentation. You can configure post types, taxonomies, additional custom text, and a display limit with a default of 100 items. Rank Math automatically excludes posts marked with noindex tags. The generated file remains empty until you select your post types. Preview the live file using the link at the top of the settings tab.

If you prefer All in One SEO (AIOSEO), the plugin activates the feature automatically. Open All in One SEO, select Sitemaps, and open the LLMs.txt tab. The AIOSEO setup documentation outlines controls for title, description, post types, exclusions, and an optional setting to convert posts to Markdown. The generator is available in the free plugin indexed on WordPress.org.

For sites without these plugins, upload your llms.txt file directly to your web server root folder using an SFTP client or your hosting file manager. Place the file inside the root or htdocs folder, then request yourdomain.com/llms.txt in your browser to confirm access. If you host on WordPress.com, the WordPress.com support documentation states that SFTP access and plugin installations require a Business or Commerce plan.

If your site runs Yoast SEO, you can manage the file without manual server edits. As documented in the Yoast SEO setup guide, follow these steps:

  • Open your WordPress administration dashboard and select Yoast SEO > Settings.
  • Open the Site features menu item.
  • Scroll to the AI tools section and locate the LLMS.txt setting.
  • Toggle the switch to the on position.
  • Click Save changes to activate the file route.

Shopify Serves llms.txt Automatically

Every Shopify store automatically serves /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /agents.md without installing external applications. According to the Shopify merchant manual, these default endpoints output your store name, store Uniform Resource Locator (URL), sitemap link, policy pages, and agentic discovery endpoints.

You do not need to upload a text file to Shopify Files or configure redirect rules. In previous years, merchants used URL redirects to point /llms.txt to an uploaded asset, but Shopify now resolves the path natively on your primary domain without language or regional market prefixes.

Creating templates/llms.txt.liquid customizes only the /llms.txt route. If you instead create templates/agents.md.liquid, that template customizes /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /agents.md simultaneously. The LLMs.txt Generator by Gokyo.ai app has a free plan and paid plans from $4.99 per month. You do not need it, because the llms.txt template customizes the file without an app.

A store with its own custom front end, such as Hydrogen, needs the llms.txt file added in that front end's code.

If you want to customize the information provided to artificial intelligence (AI) search engines, edit your theme templates using Liquid code. The Shopify theme architecture guide explains the exact workflow:

  • Navigate to your Shopify admin and select Online Store > Themes.
  • Click the three-dot menu on your active theme and select Edit code.
  • Under the Templates directory, click Add a new template.
  • Select llms.txt from the template options and click Create template.
  • Enter your custom Liquid markup or plain text, then click Save.

Wix, Webflow and Squarespace

Hosted website builders provide administrative panels to add or edit an llms.txt file without server access.

Wix generates and maintains an llms.txt file automatically. As documented in the Wix support center, open your site dashboard, navigate to SEO & GEO, click Tools and settings, and select Go to llms.txt. Click View File to inspect the output. To modify the text, click More Actions, select Edit file, choose Continue, make your adjustments, and click Save Changes. Manual edits pause automatic updates. You can restore automated updates at any time by selecting Reset to Default. Wix requires an active Premium plan, a connected custom domain, and search engine indexing enabled.

Webflow introduced native support on July 23, 2025, as announced in their product updates. You can upload a prepared plain-text file in your site settings, and Webflow serves it at your root domain while automatically blocking search crawlers from indexing the file as a web page. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Webflow help center to locate the upload field in your SEO settings, upload your file, and publish your project to make it live.

Squarespace supports native llms.txt creation exclusively on version 7.1 sites. According to the Squarespace help center, open the SEO/AI Visibility panel, choose SEO Settings, and select the LLMS.txt tab. Paste your plain-text Markdown into the field and click Save. The endpoint remains inactive until you enter text. To disable the file, clear the field and save. Squarespace version 7.0 sites do not include a native llms.txt management panel.

Code-Based Sites and Static Hosts

Sites built with modern web frameworks or deployed to static hosting platforms serve llms.txt by placing the file in the designated static assets folder.

For Next.js applications, place your completed file at public/llms.txt. As outlined in the Next.js documentation, files stored in the public directory are served directly from the domain root URL. The public/llms.txt file will resolve immediately at /llms.txt upon deployment.

Vercel serves static assets directly from your configured build output directory, as detailed in the Vercel build documentation. For standard Next.js deployments, the public folder handles asset distribution automatically.

For Netlify deployments, place llms.txt at the root of your configured publish directory. The Netlify build documentation notes that the deployment process uploads all files in the publish directory directly to the site root.

If you deploy using Cloudflare Workers, place llms.txt at the root of your static assets folder. As explained in the Cloudflare static assets guide, Workers serves files located in the configured directory from the matching URL path. Cloudflare also announced an automated AI Index system to generate llms.txt and llms-full.txt files across customer domains, though the Cloudflare blog notes that this feature remains in private beta.

Before You Upload

Before publishing your file, confirm that its structure follows the llms.txt format. The document is written in Markdown, and an H1 heading containing the project or site name is the only required part. For detailed structural patterns, see our guide on llms.txt examples and templates. If you want to provide comprehensive page copy alongside your link index, read our llms-full.txt guide.

You can generate a compliant file using our free llms.txt generator to export structured Markdown ready for deployment. Once the file is live, enter your domain into our free llms.txt checker. It checks that the address answers with a text file rather than a web page, that the file follows the format, and that its links work.

When the File Does Not Load

If your llms.txt URL does not show your file, match what you see to one of these three cases and apply its fix.

If your browser receives an HTTP 404 Not Found error, the file is either missing from the root directory or the platform setting is turned off. Check that the file sits in your root folder. If you use a WordPress plugin, verify that the module toggle is switched on and save your settings again to force route generation.

If the URL returns an HTML web page instead of raw text, the site's theme answers every unknown address with a page. Upload the file directly as a static file through your hosting panel or turn on your platform's built-in setting.

If the URL delivers an outdated file or triggers a redirect loop after updating plugin settings, web server caching or content delivery network rules are serving stale responses. Clear the site cache and exclude /llms.txt from caching. Then run it through our free llms.txt checker to test the format and links.

Next Steps for Publishing llms.txt

To add llms.txt to your website, enable your platform's built-in setting when available and upload a static Markdown file to your domain root when it is not. This advice does not apply to websites with no public pages worth indexing, nor does it apply to headless e-commerce stores until their custom front-end hosting serves the root file. Request yourdomain.com/llms.txt in your browser now to check whether your site serves the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can add llms.txt to WordPress using an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO, Rank Math, or AIOSEO. In Yoast SEO, open Settings > Site features > AI tools and switch on LLMS.txt. In Rank Math, activate the LLMS Txt module in the dashboard and configure your post types. Alternatively, upload a static llms.txt file to your site root directory using SFTP.
  • Place the llms.txt file in the root directory of your primary domain so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On static hosts and frameworks like Next.js, place it inside the public folder. The specification also permits placing the file in a subpath, such as /docs/llms.txt, to document a specific section.
  • Yes, every Shopify store automatically generates and serves /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /agents.md without requiring an app. The default file displays your store name, URL, sitemap link, and store policies. You can customize the content by adding an llms.txt.liquid template under your theme templates directory.
  • Yes, if your site has public pages worth listing. The file is low-cost to publish, though the llms.txt proposal makes no ranking promise. Read our guide on llms.txt explained for its benefits and limitations.
  • Yes, llms.txt and robots.txt perform different roles and operate together. A robots.txt file provides crawling permissions that tell search bots which URLs they may or may not fetch. An llms.txt file serves as a curated reading list that highlights your most important pages and context for AI models.
  • Open your terminal and run curl -I https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt to check your HTTP response headers. The request should return an HTTP 200 OK status with a content-type header indicating text/plain or text/markdown. You can also test your live address using our free llms.txt checker to validate link syntax.
