Omi AI Not Working: Step-by-Step Fix Order
A fix order for Omi pendant problems, built from Omi's own help center and policy pages.
When an Omi pendant stops recording or pairing, check three things first: the Bluetooth connection, your phone's background settings, and the free plan's 300 cloud minutes.
At Layer3Labs, we build AI workflow automation, custom agents and client intake integrations for small and mid-sized businesses. This guide works from Omi's published help center, docs and policies, not hands-on testing.
Fix It in This Order
Check the Omi pendant in this order: the light, the charge, the Bluetooth pairing, the phone permissions, then the cloud minutes.
Confirm the pendant has power before you reset anything in the app. The pendant streams audio to your phone over Bluetooth and stores recordings offline until it reconnects. Check the pendant first, so you know whether the fault sits in the pendant, your phone or Omi's cloud.
If the pendant still does not respond after every step, contact Omi through the Omi help center and ask about the 1-year limited warranty.
- Read the physical status light to determine the connection state.
- Attach the magnetic Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) charging cable and check for an orange indicator.
- Re-pair the pendant over Bluetooth inside the mobile Omi application.
- Confirm mobile permissions for nearby devices, background activity, and microphone access.
- Review your remaining balance against the monthly 300-minute cloud transcription cap.
- Update the Omi application to the latest release in your app store.
- Contact Omi through the Omi help center, and use the 1-year warranty for a faulty pendant.
Read the Status Light on the Pendant
The Omi status light shows three documented states: red indicates power without connection, orange indicates charging, and blue indicates an active connection.
A red light means the pendant has turned on but has not established a link with the Omi application. If your pendant shows red, keep the mobile app open in the foreground and verify that Bluetooth remains active on your phone. The pendant also buzzes at power-on.
An orange light appears whenever the pendant sits on power. Omi includes a magnetic USB-C charging cable in the retail box. Orange confirms that current is flowing into the battery, but we could not find a separate light color for a full charge in Omi's help center. Total charge time is not in our verified data.
A blue light confirms that the pendant is paired and actively connected to your phone. If your pendant shows no light at all, the behavior is undocumented in Omi's materials. Connect the device to its magnetic charger, wait several minutes, and contact support if the light remains dark.
Omi's help center documents no dedicated recording light; the status light shows connection and charging. To confirm Omi can capture, open the Omi app and check that the light is blue.
Re-Pair the Pendant Over Bluetooth
To re-pair the Omi pendant, charge it, open the Omi app, pair over Bluetooth, and wait for the light to turn blue.
Start by placing the pendant next to your mobile device. Turn your phone's Bluetooth off, then back on. Open the Omi application, which supports iOS 15 or newer on the App Store and Android 7 or newer on Google Play.
Pair the pendant from inside the Omi app, following the steps in the Omi help center. If the connection succeeds, the hardware light shifts from red to blue.
If the Omi app cannot find the pendant, restart your phone and try again. If it still fails, contact Omi through the help center.
Phone Permissions and Background Settings
Background capture can stop if phone permissions restrict Bluetooth, microphone access, or background battery usage.
Turn off battery optimization for Omi in your phone's settings so the app keeps running. Phones can restrict apps that run continuously in the background to preserve battery life. With battery optimization off, the Omi app can keep receiving audio from the pendant.
Verify nearby device permissions in your phone settings. If the Omi app lacks Bluetooth or nearby-device permission, it cannot reach the pendant. That holds even when your phone lists the pendant as paired.
Check microphone permissions within your mobile operating system as well. The Omi app also needs microphone permission to record with your phone in phone-only mode.
Plan Limits That Look Like Faults
A sudden pause in cloud transcripts can mean you reached the free plan's 300 cloud minutes for the month.
Every physical Omi pendant includes a free plan with unlimited on-phone transcription and 300 cloud minutes per month. When the 300 cloud minutes run out, Omi keeps recording, and the audio is kept for export or later processing. Cloud transcription of new audio waits for next month's minutes or an upgrade to Omi Unlimited.
Certain advanced capabilities require a paid tier. Omi's comparison table indicates that real-time transcription, speaker identification, full transcription quality, and battery-optimized capture require the Omi Unlimited plan. That tier costs $29.99 per month, or about $270 a year.
We could not find the free plan's cap on Ask Omi questions. One Google Play review from September 2026 says the free plan allows only a few. Unlimited tier subscribers receive 1,000 questions monthly. Review current plan tiers on the Omi pricing page to confirm your tier boundaries.
Audio Sync and Garbled Transcripts
Offline audio recorded away from your phone syncs automatically once the pendant reconnects to the Omi application.
The pendant records audio independently when separated from your phone. Onboard storage capacity is not in our verified data. When the device returns within Bluetooth range, it transfers stored files to the mobile application. If a synchronization session stalls, keep the app open on your screen and keep the pendant close until the transfer finishes, and contact Omi through the help center if it stays stuck.
If transcripts come out garbled, check the language setting in the Omi app first. Based Hardware, Inc. markets support for 25+ languages across its transcription pipeline. If a transcript displays random characters or phonetically mismatched words, check that the spoken language matches the target language configured in your app profile.
Phone and Mac Capture While You Troubleshoot
You can continue capturing meetings with Omi using your phone or computer microphone without the physical pendant.
The Omi mobile application includes a built-in capture mode that relies on your phone's microphone. If your hardware pendant runs out of battery or requires diagnostic review, switch to phone-only mode inside the app to record conversations directly.
Desktop recording is supported through the official Mac application, which captures meeting audio, files, and screen activity. Web users can review materials through the web application at app.omi.me. Apple Watch recording is also supported for mobile voice capture.
Windows lacks an official consumer installer, though technical users can compile code from the open-source repository on GitHub.
Outages and External System Checks
When local settings are correct but transcription fails, check external system status through Omi documentation and developer channels.
We have no outage data for Omi. To determine whether an outage affects processing, visit the Omi help center or review active community discussions and issue threads on the Omi GitHub repository.
Warranty Coverage and Return Policy
Hardware defects that persist through troubleshooting may qualify for replacement under Omi's one-year limited warranty.
Based Hardware, Inc., operates from 1628 Washington St in San Francisco under founder Nik Shevchenko. The business provides a 1-year limited warranty covering hardware defects. Omi's refund policy excludes moisture damage, and we could not verify a waterproof (IP) rating.
Return window terms are contested across Omi's published materials. Omi's refund policy page gives 5 days from delivery for change-of-mind returns, 15 days for damaged or defective units, and 14 days in the EU and UK. Omi's help center says 3 days. One Omi product page advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Always confirm current return requirements directly on the Omi refund policy page before initiating a claim. Subscription fees are non-refundable except where the law requires a refund. To request hardware service or warranty replacement, submit a ticket through the Omi help center. Note that the published help@omi.me email address is designated specifically for personal data and conversation deletion requests.
Using the Omi App With Other Wearables
The Omi mobile application can pair with select third-party wearable devices if your primary pendant is unavailable.
The Omi app can pair with the Plaud Note ($159) and NotePin ($159). It also pairs with the $49.99 Bee Pioneer from Bee, which was acquired by Amazon in July 2025. The app can import data from Limitless, which stopped selling its Pendant after it was acquired by Meta.
If you own the $249 AI companion necklace from Friend, this troubleshooting guide does not apply. While Omi initially launched under the name Friend in July 2024 before rebranding by October 2024, Avi Schiffmann's Friend necklace is an entirely separate product and business.
Prices, plans, and hardware availability change without notice, so verify current figures on the Omi pricing page before ordering accessories or upgrading tiers. Verify your current device connection in the Omi application before opening a hardware support ticket.
