Venture Capital Holdings and Early Investments
Altman dropped out of Stanford University to found the social mapping company Loopt. In March 2012, Green Dot Corporation acquired Loopt for $43.4 million, according to Wikipedia.
In April 2012, Altman co-founded the venture capital firm Hydrazine Capital. Fortune reported that when Bloomberg first valued Altman's wealth in March 2024, the bulk of his traceable fortune came from $1.2 billion invested in Hydrazine Capital fund entities. Bloomberg also tracked $434 million in venture funds at Apollo Projects.
Fortune reported in August 2025 that his fortune comes from early investments in Reddit, Uber, Asana, and Airbnb. In early 2024, Altman-affiliated entities held an 8.7% stake in Reddit ahead of its initial public offering (IPO). His holdings were worth more than $600 million on the day Reddit went public, according to Reuters. A court document shown in May 2026 revealed he had sold his Reddit stake by the end of 2025.
Direct Stakes in Helion Energy and Retro Biosciences
Altman told the MIT Technology Review in 2023 that he put basically all of his liquid net worth into nuclear fusion developer Helion Energy and longevity startup Retro Biosciences. He led a $500 million funding round for Helion in 2021 and invested $180 million into Retro Biosciences. Fortune put his personal Helion investment at $375 million in August 2025.
A court exhibit presented on May 12, 2026, during legal proceedings involving Elon Musk, revealed the fair market value of Altman's holdings in nine companies that had done business with OpenAI as of December 31, 2025. Reuters reported that this document valued his Helion stake at $1.7 billion, his stake in financial software company Stripe at $633 million, and his stake in Retro Biosciences at $258 million. The same filing recorded a $3.2 million stake in chipmaker Cerebras, alongside holdings in Lattice, Humane, Software Applications, and Formation Bio.
Altman testified that he first invested in Helion in 2015. Helion does not generate revenue but has been valued in the private market at $5.4 billion, according to Reuters. Altman stepped down as Helion board chair in March 2026 amid reported talks between Helion and OpenAI, per TechCrunch. In April 2025 he stepped down as chairman of Oklo, according to Yahoo Finance. Oklo went public in May 2024 through his special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), AltC Acquisition Corp.
OpenAI Salary and Corporate Equity Structure
Altman does not hold direct equity in OpenAI and draws a nominal executive salary from the organization. An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 990 tax filing reported by Fortune shows Altman earned $76,001 in compensation for 2023, up slightly from $73,546 in 2022. Altman has stated publicly that his salary covers only the baseline amount required for health insurance coverage.
Corporate governance discussions in 2024 weighed awarding Altman an equity stake during OpenAI's transition toward a for-profit operational model. However, when OpenAI finalized its corporate restructuring on October 28, 2025, the company announced that Altman received no equity, as reported by Reuters. The restructuring allocated an approximate 27% stake to Microsoft, valued at roughly $135 billion per Fortune.
Following the restructuring announcement, Altman wrote on X that taking an equity stake earlier would have led to "far fewer conspiracy theories," according to Business Insider. As of May 2026, Reuters confirmed Altman still held zero direct equity in OpenAI. Consequently, OpenAI's private market valuation of $852 billion, following its $122 billion funding round in March 2026 reported by TechCrunch, adds nothing to his personal net worth figure. Discrepancies in Published Wealth Calculations
Published estimates differ because many of Altman's holdings are private and hard to value. Bloomberg's index leaves out closely held companies that don't disclose his precise stake, so its March 2024 figure is a floor of at least $2 billion.
Forbes estimates also move over time. Reuters reported a Forbes figure of $4 billion on May 13, 2026, and the Forbes real-time profile listed $3.3 billion as of October 5, 2026.
His portfolio has also changed between estimates. His Reddit holdings were worth more than $600 million at the 2024 IPO, and he had sold his Reddit stake by the end of 2025. Altman is also co-founder and chairman of Tools for Humanity, per TechCrunch, and he co-founded brain-computer-interface startup Merge Labs, which raised $252 million in seed funding in January 2026, per The Decoder.
Executive Career and Venture Trajectory
Altman served as president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019. He also took part in funding rounds for Elon Musk's brain-computer interface company Neuralink, according to Fortune.
Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and became its CEO in 2019. The OpenAI board briefly fired him in November 2023 and reinstated him within days. You can read a complete career history in our profile on who Sam Altman is.
