Wang co-founded Scale AI in 2016 and ran it as chief executive officer (CEO) until June 2025, when Meta invested $14.3 billion in the company and he moved to Meta.

Alexandr Wang in Brief

Wang took the Chief AI Officer post when Meta announced Meta Superintelligence Labs on June 30, 2025.

The June 30 memo, as reported by TechCrunch, paired Wang with former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, who oversees Meta's AI products and applied research.

An October 2026 Wall Street Journal profile summarized by Entrepreneur identified Wang as Meta's first senior executive from Generation Z (Gen Z), crediting him with the Muse app's success.

  • Current role: Chief AI Officer at Meta and head of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL).
  • Organization: Meta Platforms, directing frontier model training and agent deployment.
  • Known for: Co-founding data-labeling firm Scale AI in 2016 and serving as CEO until June 2025.
  • Education: Studied machine learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before leaving in 2016.
  • In the news for: Leading the development of the Muse Spark model family and launching the Muse mobile agent.
Wang transitioned from enterprise data labeling at Scale AI to directing foundation model development and user-facing agent software at Meta.

Early Engineering Roles and Founding Scale AI

Before Scale AI, Wang worked as a programmer at Quora in his teens, interned at Hudson River Trading, and worked as a software engineer at Addepar, according to Wikipedia.

Wang enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study machine learning. In 2016, he left MIT to join the Y Combinator startup accelerator. He co-founded Scale AI that same year alongside Lucy Guo. Scale AI sold data labeling and model evaluation services to companies building AI applications.

According to Wikipedia, Scale AI was valued at $7.3 billion in 2021. Wang made the Forbes 30 Under 30 lists in 2018 and 2021. Forbes says he was the world's youngest self-made billionaire until October 2025, when Polymarket's Shayne Coplan overtook him. Time also listed Wang on its TIME100 Next and TIME100 AI rosters.

The Meta Investment and Formation of MSL

Meta invested $14.3 billion to secure a 49% equity stake in Scale AI, as documented by Wikipedia and TechCrunch. Forbes reported that the transaction valued Scale AI at approximately $29 billion. As part of that agreement, Wang stepped down as Scale AI CEO while retaining a seat on the Scale AI board of directors.

In July 2025, Meta named Shengjia Zhao chief scientist of MSL. As reported by TechCrunch, Zhao establishes MSL's core research agenda under Wang's organizational authority.

Organizational Restructuring and the TBD Lab Unit

Wang restructured Meta's artificial intelligence division four months after assuming leadership of MSL. In October 2025, Meta eliminated roughly 600 jobs across its AI operations following an internal memo sent by Wang. As reported by ABC7 News, the reductions affected personnel inside Fundamental AI Research (FAIR), product AI groups, and AI infrastructure teams.

ABC7 News reported that TBD Lab was not affected by the cuts. Wang created TBD Lab as an elite hiring unit, according to Entrepreneur's summary of the Wall Street Journal profile.

Entrepreneur reported, citing The Wall Street Journal, that TBD Lab's high pay packages irritated other Meta staff. Our guide to Meta Superintelligence Labs lays out MSL's four groups and who leads each.

Development of Muse Spark and the Muse Agent

On April 8, 2026, Meta announced the Muse Spark model on the Meta AI blog, framing it as "the first product of a ground-up overhaul of our AI efforts." TechCrunch described Muse Spark as the first model from MSL, the lab Wang was recruited to lead.

MSL expanded the model family by releasing Muse Spark 1.3 on September 2, 2026. Coverage from Latent Space AINews reported that Wang publicly highlighted the model's price-to-performance. Our technical breakdown of Muse Spark 1.3 compares those benchmark claims and token economics against competing frontier models.

Six days later, on September 8, 2026, Meta released the Muse personal AI agent application to the public. The National reported that Wang described Muse as a "very magical product." To see how the underlying software interacts with external tools, read our guide on how Meta Muse works.

At the Meta Connect event on September 23, 2026, Wang demonstrated Muse and stated, "This is how you make personal agents for everyone," per Slate. On social platform X, VnExpress reported that Wang posted more than 350 times in three weeks to promote Muse, and that he said he wrote the posts himself. VnExpress also reports that Wang posted "Muse absolutely crushes Insect," a jab at the rival Instinct agent.

Adoption Metrics and Market Reception

Yahoo Finance reported on September 24, 2026, that Muse crossed 2.8 million downloads in the United States and Canada within its first 12 days. Yahoo Finance also stated that Meta gained roughly $234 billion in market value over five days.

Entrepreneur, summarizing Wall Street Journal reporting, stated that Muse reached 5 million United States downloads in 22 days, while Meta stock gained nearly 20% after the application launched.

Yahoo Finance stated on September 24, 2026, that Wang "received $5 billion" as part of the 2025 Scale AI transaction with Meta. We found no other outlet that corroborates the $5 billion figure, so it stands as Yahoo Finance's claim only.
