Who Is Jeff Dean, Co-Founder of Discovery Loop?
A sourced timeline from Google's 30th employee in 1999 to Discovery Loop co-founder in 2026.
Jeff Dean is a computer scientist and a co-founder of Discovery Loop, an artificial intelligence (AI) research startup that he launched in August 2026 after 27 years at Google.

Before co-founding Discovery Loop, Dean served as Google's chief scientist, led Google Brain, co-created MapReduce and Bigtable, and helped design TensorFlow.
Where Jeff Dean Is Now
Jeff Dean left Google in August 2026 after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, an artificial intelligence research startup registered as a public benefit corporation. On August 5, 2026, CNBC reported that Dean was stepping down from his role as Google's chief scientist to build an independent venture.
Leadership titles at Discovery Loop vary across early reports. Radical Ventures, which co-led the first funding round, describes Dean as Discovery Loop's chief executive officer (CEO). TechCrunch reported that Dean "reportedly plans to serve as CEO," while the official Discovery Loop website lists the four co-founders without executive titles. None of these sources calls him Discovery Loop's chief scientist; that was his last title at Google.
In a corporate blog memo on August 5, 2026, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai wrote: "After an incredible 27-year run, Jeff Dean is at a moment where he wants to try something new." In the same reshuffle, Demis Hassabis became chair of Google DeepMind and also took the title of chief scientist of Alphabet, per CNBC.
- Current role: Co-founder (named CEO by Radical Ventures, co-lead of the first round)
- Organization: Discovery Loop (public benefit corporation)
- Known for: Co-creating MapReduce and Bigtable, helping design TensorFlow, and co-directing Gemini at Google
- Education: BS from University of Minnesota (1990); PhD from University of Washington (1996)
- Recent news: Left Google in August 2026 after 27 years to launch Discovery Loop
Discovery Loop Mission and Early Capital
Discovery Loop is organized as a public benefit corporation that aims to use artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific research. According to its stated mission, Discovery Loop is building artificial intelligence solutions to automate entire experimental loops, starting with machine learning (ML) research and engineering.
Radical Ventures reported that Discovery Loop runs thousands of experiments in parallel and is building an in-person team in Palo Alto. The startup's initial financing round was co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, Doerr Capital, and Alphabet participating as investors. Sundar Pichai confirmed that Google will serve as both a founding investor and a cloud infrastructure partner.
Reports on the startup's valuation have shifted rapidly. In September 2026, TechStory, citing Business Insider, reported that Discovery Loop was targeting a valuation of as much as $50 billion in an ongoing funding round. Earlier reports indicated the startup sought approximately $1 billion in capital at a valuation of roughly $10 billion. Discovery Loop has not published confirmation of either figure.
Dean described the premise to The New York Times, as reported by TechCrunch: "We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop." On the public benefit structure, Dean told The New York Times: "We might make decisions that are not necessarily in the company's purist financial interests." Moneywise, via Yahoo Finance, reported that Dean told Wired the idea for Discovery Loop first arose "a few weeks ago" before the launch.

Discovery Loop Founding Team and Collaborators
Jeff Dean co-founded Discovery Loop alongside three senior artificial intelligence researchers who also left Google in August 2026. The founding team includes Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals.
Sanjay Ghemawat co-created MapReduce and Bigtable with Dean at Google. Silicon Republic identified Quoc Le as a research scientist and Oriol Vinyals as research vice president at DeepMind. Radical Ventures says Vinyals co-led Gemini.
Discovery Loop's own site lists the founders' prior work, including Google File System, MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner, TensorFlow, Pathways, tensor processing units (TPUs), and Gemini. Other researchers who left large labs to start companies are covered in our overview of AI researchers and founders to watch.
- Jeff Dean: Former Google chief scientist and Google Brain lead
- Sanjay Ghemawat: Longtime Google systems engineer and co-creator of MapReduce and Bigtable
- Quoc Le: Machine learning research scientist at Google

Jeff Dean at Google and Distributed Systems
Jeff Dean joined Google in 1999 as the company's 30th employee, after working at the Western Research Laboratory of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and Compaq. During his early years at Google, Dean built core components of Google Search, including crawling, indexing, and query-serving architectures.
Together with Sanjay Ghemawat, Dean co-created MapReduce, and the two co-authored the 2004 paper "MapReduce: Simplified Data Processing on Large Clusters," per Wikipedia.
In his farewell note to Google colleagues in August 2026, Dean noted that Google now operates thirteen products used by more than a billion people, as reported by Yahoo Finance.
Machine Learning Systems from TensorFlow to Gemini
Jeff Dean led Google Brain, according to Radical Ventures, and Wikipedia lists him among the designers of TensorFlow's initial release. TensorFlow grew out of DistBelief, an earlier Google system that was refactored into TensorFlow.
From 2018 to 2023, Dean served as head of Google AI, overseeing machine learning initiatives across the organization.
When Google Brain merged with DeepMind in April 2023 to form Google DeepMind, Dean became Google's chief scientist. Radical Ventures says Dean co-directed Gemini.

Academic Credentials and Technical Honors
Jeff Dean earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in computer science and economics from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science at the University of Washington in 1996.
In 2009, Dean was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) awarded Dean the ACM Prize in Computing in 2012, and in 2021 he received the IEEE John von Neumann Medal, according to Wikipedia.
Angel Investments Across Modern Artificial Intelligence
Outside his work at Google and Discovery Loop, Jeff Dean is an angel investor. Wikipedia says he has invested in dozens of AI startups, including Perplexity, Roboflow, Sakana AI and World Labs.

Jeff Dean Net Worth and Pay
No named news outlet has published a net worth or salary figure for Jeff Dean as of October 2026.
Neither Google nor Discovery Loop has disclosed his pay or his equity stake. The up-to-$50 billion target reported by Business Insider is a valuation for Discovery Loop as a company, and it does not show what Dean's own stake is worth.
