ChatGPT Pro vs Business: Which to Buy for One Person or a Team

Personal Pro tiers against Business workspace seats, with the seat math for a two-person team.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Oct 1, 2026

One heavy user should buy ChatGPT Pro, and a company of two or more people that needs admin controls should buy ChatGPT Business. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized businesses, and we see the plan bill alongside the work it buys. On Business, a Premium seat costs $125 a month, or $100 billed annually. Premium gives 5x Standard usage, no five-hour limit and a first dot.

ChatGPT Pro costs $100, $200, or $500 per month for one user on a month-to-month schedule. ChatGPT Business needs at least two users. Standard seats cost $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually. A business can mix and reassign these seat tiers across staff members.

Usage limits also separate the plans. OpenAI's DevDay recap says Pro 500 offers 25x the ChatGPT Plus usage allowance alongside Astra Ultrafast processing in Codex and ChatGPT Work. OpenAI's speed docs list Ultrafast for Pro 500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. Business is not on that list.

Pro and Business Premium seats both include an always-on dot. Pro's first dot is rolling out outside the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the UK. Business Premium seats get dots across supported regions.

ChatGPT Pro vs Business: The Quick Pick

The decision between ChatGPT Pro and ChatGPT Business turns on whether you are buying compute for one person or a team.

Pro has three tiers, and Business has two seat types.

One heavy individual buys Pro. There is no seat minimum, billing is monthly, and Pro has no five-hour limit today.

A company with two or more people buys Business. The pricing page lists a shared workspace with an admin console, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) single sign-on (SSO) and unified billing.

Within Business, a Premium seat costs $125 monthly ($100 billed annually) and provides 5x Standard usage with no five-hour limit.

A Premium seat also includes a first dot at no extra cost.

Seats can be mixed.

You can give a Premium seat to your heaviest user and $25 Standard seats to everyone else.

Each Pro account is a separate personal plan. Several of them do not add up to a shared workspace.

Subscription Costs and Seat Math

Pro is priced per person. Business is priced per seat.

ChatGPT Pro offers three flat monthly tiers: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and Pro 500 at $500 per month.

OpenAI offers no annual billing discounts on Pro tiers.

ChatGPT Business requires a minimum of two seats and provides both monthly and discounted annual payment agreements.

Standard seats cost $25 monthly, dropping to $20 on an annual contract.

Premium seats cost $125 per user monthly, or $100 per user monthly when billed annually as $1,200 per user.

Two seats cost $50 to $250 a month.

A two-person deployment using two Premium seats costs $250 monthly on month-to-month billing, or $200 per month ($2,400 annually) under an annual agreement.

A mixed setup pairing one Premium seat with one Standard seat costs $150 monthly on month-to-month billing, or $120 per month ($1,440 annually).

Pro 500 covers one person.

Pro 500 costs $500 every month, totaling $6,000 across a full year for a single personal account.

For that same $500 monthly expenditure, a company could deploy four monthly Business Premium seats, or five annual Business Premium seats billed at $6,000 yearly.

Usage Allowances and Processing Limits

Pro and Business Premium have no five-hour limit. Plus and Standard Business seats do.

Usage still varies by model, task size, context and tool use.

On Pro, OpenAI notes that weekly limits may also apply.

Each model also has its own allowance. When you hit one, ChatGPT shows the reset time if it is available.

OpenAI says Pro 500 has its highest usage allowance, at 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance.

OpenAI has not published numerical multiples for Pro 100 or Pro 200.

OpenAI changed the Pro 200 rules recently.

New Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower allowance than Pro 200 used to include. OpenAI says the change is meant "to reflect our increasingly efficient models". The price stays $200 a month.

Subscribers active at the eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keep the old allowance through October 29, 2026. That holds while their Pro 200 subscription stays active. After that date, they move to the lower allowance.

Within ChatGPT Business, Standard seats share the approximate five-hour message guidelines documented for ChatGPT Plus across different base models.

OpenAI estimates 5 to 45 local messages per five hours for GPT-6 Astra and 15 to 160 for GPT-6.1 Sol. GPT-6 Sol gets 15 to 150, and GPT-6 Luna 350 to 3,000. OpenAI calls these estimates rather than fixed limits.

Premium seats lift the five-hour restriction and deliver 5x Standard usage.

Ultrafast is the other gap.

Astra Ultrafast runs in Codex and ChatGPT Work on Pro 500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. Business is not listed.

OpenAI documentation specifies that GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than GPT-6 Astra in Standard mode in Codex.

OpenAI says the figure measures token generation speed rather than task completion time. Ultrafast also uses included subscription limits at 8x the Standard rate.

On Pro, purchased credits stay valid for 12 months. OpenAI's credits article does not list a dollar price.

The ChatGPT pricing page lists Pro image creation as unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. OpenAI's usage docs add that image generations use included limits about 3 to 5x faster on average.

Workspace Controls and Account Administration

ChatGPT Business is a workspace plan with admin features. ChatGPT Pro is a personal plan.

Only Business lets you add seats for other people.

The Business tab of the ChatGPT pricing page lists an admin console, unified billing and SAML SSO.

ChatGPT Pro functions as a single-user license.

OpenAI's Pro tiers article prohibits sharing account credentials, reselling access and automatically extracting data. So one Pro account cannot serve a team.

Several Pro accounts also mean several separate subscriptions to manage.

Business seats are flexible.

OpenAI's billing article says seats can be mixed and reassigned as staff change.

You can keep a personal Pro plan while in a Business workspace, as long as the personal workspace stays separate.

Always-On Dots and Geographic Availability

Pro and Business Premium seats both include a first dot, but the rollout regions differ.

OpenAI's dots announcement says the first dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost.

Usage terms after the initial month have not yet been published.

Pro has the narrower rollout.

For ChatGPT Pro users, OpenAI is rolling out dots in supported markets excluding the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the UK.

ChatGPT Business Premium seats get dots across supported regions.

Buyers in the UK, Switzerland and the EEA are affected.

For those buyers, no Pro tier includes a dot at launch.

For a dot, they need ChatGPT Business with at least two seats, one of them Premium.

Routing Scenarios for ChatGPT Pro vs Business

Match the plan to headcount first, then to workload.

A solo buyer has the simplest choice.

An independent consultant, researcher, or solo operator handling heavy analytical tasks should choose ChatGPT Pro 100 or Pro 200.

Two-person firms benefit from mixed Business seats.

Deploying one Premium seat ($125 monthly) and one Standard seat ($25 monthly) totals $150 per month on month-to-month billing.

The lead operator gets 5x Standard usage with a dot, while the second employee receives standard workspace access and shared billing.

A developer who works in Codex all day and wants Ultrafast should pick ChatGPT Pro 500.

OpenAI does not list Business for Ultrafast.

On Pro 500, Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster in Codex. Ultrafast also uses included limits at 8x the Standard rate.

Larger organizations should evaluate ChatGPT Enterprise instead.

Eligible Enterprise plans are also on OpenAI's Ultrafast list.

Our ChatGPT Enterprise pricing guide covers that plan.

Plan Tradeoffs and Flip Conditions

Each plan has a case where it is the wrong buy.

Skip Business if you work alone. The two-user minimum means paying for a seat nobody uses.

Skip Pro for a team. OpenAI prohibits sharing account credentials, and each Pro account is a separate personal plan.

Product changes could alter this verdict.

If OpenAI extends Astra Ultrafast access to ChatGPT Business Premium seats, solo technical operators might adopt Business by buying an auxiliary Standard seat.

If OpenAI introduces discounted annual billing across Pro 100, 200, and 500, the annual cost equation would favor Pro more heavily.

Grandfathered Pro 200 users face an additional constraint.

OpenAI ties the old Pro 200 allowance to an active Pro 200 subscription through October 29, 2026. The help article does not say the allowance survives a plan change, so weigh that before you switch.

Count the people who need access before you pick a plan.

The Verdict

ChatGPT Pro fits one heavy user who wants no seat minimum and no five-hour limit. Pro 100 and Pro 200 cover solo work. Pro 500 is the only plan of the two with Astra Ultrafast in Codex and ChatGPT Work.

ChatGPT Business wins for organizations with two or more employees that need unified billing, an admin console and SAML SSO. Mixing $25 Standard and $125 Premium seats lets you pay for heavy usage only where someone needs it.

Choose ChatGPT Pro if you work independently and prioritize individual processing volume. Choose ChatGPT Business if multiple staff members need collaborative access under centralized organizational control.
