ChatGPT Pro Pricing and Tier Comparison
What each ChatGPT Pro tier includes and who should pay for the higher ones.
ChatGPT Pro pricing is $100, $200, or $500 a month, billed monthly with no annual discount. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized businesses, and we see the plan bill alongside the work it buys. Pro 500 gets 25x Plus usage, per OpenAI's DevDay recap.
Every tier includes Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra and has no five-hour limit. The tiers differ in included usage. Only Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast. If you hit a limit, you can buy credits instead of moving up a tier.
The step from Pro 200 to Pro 500 costs $300 more a month. The extra $300 buys more usage plus Ultrafast.
ChatGPT Pro Price: $100, $200 or $500 a Month
OpenAI offers three ChatGPT Pro tiers priced at $100, $200, and $500 per month. Every plan bills on a monthly cycle. OpenAI does not provide annual billing or prepayment discounts for personal Pro plans. Over twelve months, a Pro 100 subscription costs $1,200, Pro 200 totals $2,400, and Pro 500 reaches $6,000. Moving from Pro 200 to Pro 500 adds $300 each month, or $3,600 over a year. You choose your tier when you open the ChatGPT pricing page.
| Plan Tier | Monthly Price | Annual Cost | Astra Ultrafast Included | Stated Usage Allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 | $1,200 | No | Baseline Pro allowance |
| Pro 200 | $200 | $2,400 | No | Higher usage than Pro 100 |
| Pro 500 | $500 | $6,000 | Yes | Highest usage (25x Plus) |
The Pro card says "Best for research and coding" for every tier. OpenAI publishes no message counts for any Pro tier. You cannot compare tiers by message count.
- Pro 100 ($100 per month): Entry Pro tier without Astra Ultrafast; provides baseline Pro model and feature allowances.
- Pro 200 ($200 per month): Mid-tier plan without Astra Ultrafast; includes more usage than Pro 100.
- Pro 500 ($500 per month): Top-tier plan with Astra Ultrafast included; provides the highest allowance, rated by OpenAI at 25x the Plus allowance.
Included Features Across Every Pro Tier
Every ChatGPT Pro subscription includes Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and access to Dot. OpenAI removes the rolling five-hour limit that restricts ChatGPT Plus users. Weekly limits may also apply, per OpenAI's usage docs. Subscribers also get maximum deep research, file uploads, and maximum memory and context.
ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage. A long Codex session draws on the same allowance as ChatGPT Work. In ChatGPT, GPT-6.1 Sol is available inside Work and Codex, but not standard Chat. OpenAI includes one always-on agent called Dot in every Pro subscription at no extra cost, as announced in its Dots launch notes. This rollout currently excludes users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Usage terms for Dot after the first month have not been published by OpenAI.
The ChatGPT pricing page lists unlimited and faster image creation, noted explicitly as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails. However, OpenAI notes in its usage documentation that image generations consume included Codex and Work limits approximately 3 to 5x faster on average. The Pro card also lists expanded projects, tasks and custom GPTs.
- Reasoning and models: Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra, with GPT-6.1 Sol available in Work and Codex.
- Extended sessions: Longer sessions in Codex and ChatGPT Work, which share usage.
- Always-on agent: Your first dot included at no extra cost, excluding the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.
- Deep research and memory: Maximum deep research, maximum memory and context, projects, and file uploads.
- Image generation: Unlimited image generation subject to abuse guardrails, consuming limits 3 to 5x faster on average.
- Flexible usage: No five-hour limit, though weekly limits may also apply.
How ChatGPT Pro Pricing Varies by Usage Tier
The three ChatGPT Pro tiers differ in included usage and in access to Astra Ultrafast. OpenAI states in its Pro tiers help article that Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, while Pro 500 offers the highest usage of all three plans. In its DevDay recap, OpenAI states that Pro 500 delivers 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance. OpenAI has not published a specific Plus multiple for Pro 100 or Pro 200.
Only Pro 500 includes Astra Ultrafast. You select Ultrafast directly within the model picker. It runs in Codex and ChatGPT Work. It is not offered in general chat. According to OpenAI speed documentation, GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than GPT-6 Astra in Standard mode in Codex. This figure measures token generation speed. It says nothing about total task time. Ultrafast uses included limits at 8x the Standard rate. Purchased credits draw down at 6x. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast. It is also unavailable to workspaces requiring inference residency outside the United States.
OpenAI also adjusted usage terms for Pro 200. The help article was updated September 29, 2026 to explain that new Pro 200 subscriptions receive a lower usage allowance than earlier Pro 200 plans. The monthly price remains $200. OpenAI cites increasingly efficient models for this reduction, without publishing the specific difference. Subscribers active at the eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keep their previous allowance through October 29, 2026. After that date, they move to the lower allowance at $200 per month. OpenAI ties that grandfathered allowance to an active Pro 200 subscription and does not state that it survives a plan change if you move to Pro 500. Meanwhile, GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on all plans on October 14, 2026.
- Usage scaling: Pro 100 provides entry Pro capacity; Pro 200 includes more usage; Pro 500 provides 25x the Plus allowance.
- Astra Ultrafast access: Available only on Pro 500 in Codex and Work, generating tokens up to 8x faster while consuming limits at 8x the Standard rate.
- Pro 200 allowance change: New subscribers receive a lower usage allowance at $200 per month; eligible existing subscribers keep earlier limits through October 29, 2026.
- Model retirement: GPT-5.5 retires across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on October 14, 2026.
How Pro Billing and Credits Work
ChatGPT Pro bills monthly only. You manage your plan directly in ChatGPT under Settings, then My Plan. Every model carries specific allowance thresholds. When a model hits its limit, it becomes unavailable until its allowance resets. ChatGPT displays the reset time on screen when available. A temporary limit does not terminate your subscription. You cannot bypass a limit through a setting. OpenAI Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits either.
Users who reach their included limits can purchase credits to continue working without upgrading their plan. According to OpenAI's flexible usage guide, credits support activity in Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Credits do not add usage for every model or feature. You buy credits in Settings under Usage in ChatGPT, or under Usage and Billing in Codex. Your subscription allowance is always consumed first. Purchased credits then cover any eligible overflow. Credits remain valid for 12 months from purchase. They are non-transferable and non-refundable, except where required by law. The credits help article does not list a dollar price for credits.
OpenAI prohibits sharing credentials, reselling access, and extracting data automatically. So one Pro plan cannot cover a team. You cancel through the platform you bought on, such as ChatGPT web, Apple App Store, or Google Play. Access normally continues through the end of your billing period. You can keep a personal Pro subscription while joining a ChatGPT Business workspace, provided you maintain them as separate workspaces.
- Billing terms: Billed monthly only; no annual discounts; managed in Settings under My Plan.
- Allowance limits: Limits reset automatically; ChatGPT displays reset times; support cannot reset allowances manually.
- Credit mechanics: Credits extend Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint; valid for 12 months; non-refundable.
- Cancellation: Cancel via web, Apple, or Google Play; access runs until the billing period closes.
- Account rules: No account sharing or data scraping; personal Pro accounts remain separate from Business workspaces.
Cheaper Alternatives for High-Volume Workflows
Pro 100 at $100 a month is the cheapest way to get ChatGPT Pro. It costs half as much as Pro 200 and keeps Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra. However, you may not even need Pro 100. If you only hit limits now and then, use ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month and buy credits. Plus subscribers face five-hour local message limits, such as estimated ranges of 5 to 45 messages for GPT-6 Astra or 15 to 160 for GPT-6.1 Sol. When you hit those limits, credits let you continue working in Codex and ChatGPT Work without committing to a $100 recurring fee.
Teams of two or more should compare Pro with ChatGPT Business. ChatGPT Business plans require at least two users. As detailed in OpenAI's Business billing guide, Standard seats cost $25 per user monthly, or $20 per user billed annually. Premium seats cost $125 per user monthly, or $100 per user billed annually. A Premium seat provides 5x more usage than Standard and removes the five-hour cap. Two Business Premium seats on an annual agreement cost $200 per month total ($2,400 per year). That matches the cost of one personal Pro 200 subscription ($2,400 per year). The Business column of the ChatGPT pricing page lists an admin console, SAML SSO and unified billing. Our Pro vs Business comparison covers team needs.
- ChatGPT Plus with credits ($20/mo plus credits): Best for variable workloads requiring high volume only a few days each month.
- ChatGPT Pro 100 ($100/mo): Lowest entry cost for dedicated Pro reasoning and sessions without five-hour caps.
- ChatGPT Business Premium ($100/user/mo billed annually): Equal in monthly cost to Pro 200 for a two-user shop, adding administrative tools and shared workspace controls.
ChatGPT Pro Pricing Compared to Rival Plans
Claude Max and Google AI Ultra both price their tiers near $100 and $200 a month. Anthropic offers Claude Max plans starting at $100 per month, as shown on its pricing page. Claude support documentation details that Max 5x costs $100 per month and Max 20x costs $200 per month. Both plans bill monthly only. Max plans provide 5x or 20x more usage per rolling five-hour session than Claude Pro, with weekly limits. Claude Code is included and shares plan limits. Max plans also list access to Fable on usage credits. Claude's pricing table lists no SSO, central billing or admin controls on Max. You can compare features in our guide to ChatGPT Pro versus Claude Max.
Google structures its top tier under Google AI Ultra. According to the Google subscription page, AI Ultra costs $99.99 per month for 5x higher usage limits versus AI Pro. A higher tier costs $199.99 per month for 20x higher usage limits versus AI Pro. Both tiers include cloud storage starting at 20 TB. Neither Anthropic nor Google publishes a $500 monthly tier on the pages read.
| Subscription Tier | Monthly Fee | Annual Discount | Usage Allowance Framing | Accelerated Speed Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Pro 100 | $100 | None | Baseline Pro allowance | None |
| OpenAI Pro 200 | $200 | None | Higher allowance than Pro 100 | None |
| OpenAI Pro 500 | $500 | None | 25x Plus allowance | Astra Ultrafast in Codex and Work |
| Claude Max 5x | $100 | None | 5x Pro usage per 5 hours | None published |
| Claude Max 20x | $200 | None | 20x Pro usage per 5 hours | None published |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 | Not verified | 5x higher limits vs AI Pro | None published |
| Google AI Ultra | $199.99 | Not verified | 20x higher limits vs AI Pro | None published |
Evaluating Whether to Upgrade to ChatGPT Pro
Upgrading to ChatGPT Pro makes financial sense only when standard model allowances repeatedly block daily production. This upgrade is not for individual users whose workflows stay within standard Plus limits. If you rarely hit the estimated 5 to 45 message window for GPT-6 Astra, paying $100 to $500 monthly wastes money. In that case, use ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month and buy credits when you hit a limit. Pro is also a poor fit for a team. OpenAI prohibits sharing Pro credentials, so each person needs a plan. ChatGPT Business starts at 2 users, and its pricing column lists an admin console and SAML SSO.
Two things would change this advice. An annual billing discount would cut the yearly totals of $1,200, $2,400 and $6,000. Published usage numbers for Pro 100 and Pro 200 would let you price the step between tiers exactly.
Before you pick a tier, watch your usage in Settings → Usage for a few weeks. Our ChatGPT Pro limits guide explains how resets work.
- Skip Pro if: You work within standard Plus limits, experience only occasional overflow, or need administrative controls for a team.
- Choose Pro 100 ($100/mo) if: You need daily Pro reasoning and longer Codex sessions without five-hour caps on a single account.
- Choose Pro 200 ($200/mo) if: You consistently exceed baseline Pro limits and run heavy continuous research workflows.
- Choose Pro 500 ($500/mo) if: Your daily Codex or ChatGPT Work sessions need Astra Ultrafast and the highest included usage of the three tiers.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Pro 100 is the cheapest tier at $100 per month, and OpenAI offers no annual billing discount on Pro. If you only hit limits now and then, ChatGPT Plus keeps your fixed cost at $20 a month. When you hit a limit, you can buy credits for Codex and ChatGPT Work instead of upgrading. Teams of two or more can use ChatGPT Business instead. Standard seats cost $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually. Premium seats cost $125, or $100 billed annually.
