ChatGPT Pro 500: Is OpenAI's $500 Tier Worth It?
When ChatGPT Pro 500 is worth $300 a month more than Pro 200, based on what OpenAI publishes.
ChatGPT Pro 500 is worth the $500 monthly price only for an individual who runs long Codex or ChatGPT Work sessions daily and continuously exhausts Pro 200 limits. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized businesses, and we see the plan bill alongside the work it buys. Everyone else should stay on Plus, Pro 100 or Pro 200.
OpenAI announced Pro 500 on September 29, 2026. Pro 200 also reopened to new subscribers. Pro 500 costs $300 a month more than Pro 200.
Before you upgrade, count how often you hit Pro 200 limits in a week.
Who Pro 500 Is For (and Who Should Stay on Pro 200)
ChatGPT Pro 500 serves an individual operator who runs heavy Codex or ChatGPT Work tasks every day and regularly hits limits on Pro 200. In its DevDay recap, OpenAI says Pro 500 carries 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance. That is OpenAI's highest usage allowance. No other self-serve plan gets Astra Ultrafast.
Do not buy Pro 500 for speed alone. Ultrafast spends included usage at 8x the Standard rate, per OpenAI's speed docs. You pay for volume first and speed second.
For writing, research and chat, skip Pro 500. Plus at $20 or Pro 100 at $100 is the cheaper start. Plus users who hit a limit can buy credits instead of upgrading.
Teams evaluating Pro 500 should consider ChatGPT Pro vs Business instead. OpenAI prohibits sharing Pro credentials. So one Pro 500 plan cannot serve a team. ChatGPT Business Premium seats cost $125 per user a month, or $100 billed annually. Each Premium seat gets 5x the usage of a Standard seat.
Included Usage and Features on the Pro 500 Plan
Pro 500 has the most included usage of the three Pro tiers, per OpenAI's Pro tiers help article. In its DevDay recap, OpenAI states that Pro 500 delivers 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance. OpenAI has not published equivalent Plus multiples for Pro 100 or Pro 200.
Pro 500 is billed monthly only. Twelve months cost $6,000. OpenAI offers no annual billing or prepayment for Pro, so there is no yearly discount.
The ChatGPT pricing page lists Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra and longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions. It also lists maximum deep research and maximum memory and context. The Pro card covers all three tiers, so these features alone are no reason to pick Pro 500. Pro also includes a first dot, OpenAI's always-on agent, at no extra cost. Per the dots announcement, Pro dots are rolling out outside the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Image creation is advertised on the pricing page as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails. Technical documentation on learn.chatgpt.com specifies that image generations consume included Codex and ChatGPT Work limits approximately 3 to 5x faster on average.
Astra Ultrafast Token Speed and Multipliers
Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than GPT-6 Astra in Standard mode within Codex. OpenAI's speed docs say this measures token generation speed. It says nothing about total task time.
Ultrafast is available only in Codex and ChatGPT Work, so you cannot turn it on in general chat. You select it in the model picker.
Ultrafast uses included subscription limits at 8x the Standard rate. If you exhaust your subscription limits and rely on purchased credits, Ultrafast bills those credits at 6x the Standard rate. For comparison, Fast mode uses included limits at 2.5x and credits at 2x.
Subscribers on Pro 100 and Pro 200 cannot access Ultrafast at launch, even if they buy credits. In addition, Ultrafast is unavailable to workspaces that require inference residency outside the United States.
The Pro 200 Allowance Reduction
New Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower usage allowance than Pro 200 used to include. The price stays $200 a month. OpenAI's Pro tiers help article, updated September 29, 2026, does not say by how much.
Subscribers active at the eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keep the previous higher allowance through October 29, 2026, provided their subscription remains active. After October 29, 2026, those accounts transition to the lower allowance. Retaining that grandfathered allowance does not grant access to Astra Ultrafast.
Switching plans puts that older allowance at risk. OpenAI ties the older allowance to an active Pro 200 subscription. If you upgrade to Pro 500 for a month and attempt to downgrade back, OpenAI documentation does not state that your grandfathered allowance survives the plan change. If you hold the older allowance, watch your usage in Settings → Usage before and after October 29, 2026. Upgrade only if you keep hitting limits. Our ChatGPT Pro limits guide explains how resets work.
ChatGPT Pro 200 vs 500 Dollar Math
Moving from Pro 200 to Pro 500 increases your monthly software expense by $300, which adds $3,600 across a full year. That jump pays for Astra Ultrafast access and a higher usage allowance.
OpenAI publishes no Plus multiple for Pro 200. So you cannot work out how much extra usage the $300 buys. OpenAI also publishes no message counts for any Pro tier. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, unlike Plus, but per-model allowances apply and reset over time. At a limit, ChatGPT shows the reset time when it is available.
| Scenario | Recommended Plan | Monthly Cost | Primary Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily long Codex sessions hitting Pro 200 limits | ChatGPT Pro 500 | $500 | Highest allowance (25x Plus, per OpenAI) and Astra Ultrafast |
| Heavy coding with occasional caps | ChatGPT Pro 200 + Credits | $200 + credits | Credits cover overflow (credit prices not published) |
| Deep research and document analysis | ChatGPT Pro 100 or 200 | $100 to $200 | Ultrafast only runs in Codex and ChatGPT Work |
| Standard writing and daily tasks | ChatGPT Plus | $20 | Can buy credits at a limit instead of upgrading |
| Technical team of two or more | ChatGPT Business Premium | $125/seat | 5x Standard seat usage, admin console, SAML SSO |
Testing Pro 500 Before Committing
Because OpenAI bills Pro plans monthly without multi-month contracts, you can test Pro 500 for a single month. You can upgrade inside your account by opening Settings and selecting My Plan. Grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers are the exception. OpenAI ties that allowance to an active Pro 200 subscription and does not say it survives a plan change.
Track your usage before you upgrade. ChatGPT shows it under Settings → Usage, and Codex under Usage & Billing. If you seldom hit a Pro 200 limit, Pro 500 buys usage you will not use.
Consider flexible credits as an alternative to upgrading. Credits start after your plan allowance runs out, per OpenAI's credits help article. They cover eligible use in Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Credits stay valid for 12 months and are non-refundable. The help article does not list a dollar price for credits. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 will not unlock Astra Ultrafast at launch.
Where Pro 500 Sits Against Rival Plans
Pro 500 costs about $300 a month more than the top Claude Max or Google AI Ultra tier. In our ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max analysis, Anthropic caps its individual subscriptions at Claude Max 20x for $200 per month. Google AI Ultra similarly sits at $199.99 monthly.
Neither Anthropic nor Google lists a tier above $200 on the pricing pages read for this guide.
Two things would change this verdict. OpenAI could let Pro 100 or Pro 200 add Ultrafast through credits, which it does not do at launch. If your weekly usage fits inside the lower Pro 200 allowance, Pro 200 is the better buy.
If you hit Pro 200 limits most working days, test ChatGPT Pro 500 for one month. Hold off if you keep a grandfathered Pro 200 allowance.
