Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro: Which High-Usage Plan Fits Your Work
How each plan meters heavy use, and which coding agent comes with it.
Pick the plan whose tools you work in, because ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max cost the same at $100 and $200 a month. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized businesses, and we see the plan bill alongside the work it buys. If you use Codex, ChatGPT Work or a dot, pick ChatGPT Pro. If you work in Claude Code and Claude, now with Cowork merged in, pick Claude Max.
OpenAI's Pro tiers article lists Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 a month. Claude Max starts at $100 per month for Max 5x and reaches $200 per month for Max 20x on the Claude pricing page. Only Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast. Ultrafast is a faster token-generation mode for Codex and ChatGPT Work. Claude Max tops out at $200.
The limits work differently. Claude Max has a rolling five-hour session window, with weekly limits on top. ChatGPT Pro has no five-hour limit today. ChatGPT Pro uses per-model allowances instead, and OpenAI says weekly limits may also apply. If waiting out a five-hour window would stall your work, that difference favors ChatGPT Pro.

ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max: Which to Pick
The two price ladders line up exactly. At $100 monthly, ChatGPT Pro provides Pro 100 while Claude Max provides Max 5x. At $200 monthly, the tiers match again with Pro 200 and Max 20x.
So pick by the tools you use. If you code in Codex, run tasks in ChatGPT Work or want an always-on dot, ChatGPT Pro covers all three. If you code in Claude Code and work in Claude, Claude Max gives you 5x or 20x Claude Pro's usage in the same tools.
Above $200, only ChatGPT has a tier. OpenAI sells Pro 500 at $500 per month, which adds access to Astra Ultrafast in Codex and ChatGPT Work. Anthropic does not publish a $500 plan or an accelerated speed tier on its public pricing pages. If you want a speed mode, Pro 500 is the only option of the two.
Usage Limits and Session Windows
Claude Max structures capacity around rolling five-hour windows and weekly caps, while ChatGPT Pro currently runs without a five-hour session restriction. Anthropic's Max plan article sets Max against Claude Pro per session. Max 5x gives you 5x Claude Pro's usage. Max 20x gives you 20x.
Anthropic does not publish fixed message numbers for Claude Max tiers. Hit the session limit and you have three choices. You can wait for the window to reset or move up a plan. On paid plans, you can also turn on usage credits at standard API rates. The Claude pricing page also lists access to Fable on usage credits for Max plans.
ChatGPT Pro meters use per model. As documented in the ChatGPT Pro tiers guide and learn.chatgpt.com pricing documentation, Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, though weekly limits may also apply. Model allowances vary by tier. When a model reaches its limit, ChatGPT shows the reset time if one is available. Support cannot reset the limit for you.
OpenAI altered allowances for new Pro 200 subscriptions. OpenAI's help article, updated September 29, 2026, says new Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower allowance than Pro 200 used to include. OpenAI says the change is meant "to reflect our increasingly efficient models". The price stays $200 a month. Subscribers active at the eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keep the old allowance through October 29, 2026. That holds only while their Pro 200 subscription stays active. After that date, they move to the lower allowance. Our ChatGPT Pro limits guide covers each cap.
Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro for Coding Workflows
Each plan includes a coding agent that draws on the plan's own limits. ChatGPT Pro has Codex. Claude Max has Claude Code. Choose on which agent fits your work and how each plan meters it.
Codex is included across all ChatGPT Pro tiers and shares usage with ChatGPT Work. On the $500 Pro 500 tier, OpenAI adds Astra Ultrafast access. According to the speed configuration documentation, GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than GPT-6 Astra in Standard mode in Codex. OpenAI notes the figure is about token generation speed. The figure does not measure overall task completion time. Ultrafast uses included subscription limits at 8x the Standard rate. Purchased credits are billed at 6x. Fast mode on supported models consumes limits at 2.5x the Standard rate.
Claude Code is included in all paid Claude plans. Anthropic says Claude Code shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan. On Max, that means the five-hour session and the weekly limits. Spend the session in Claude Code and chat waits too. Chat resumes when the window resets or when you turn on usage credits. Our Claude Code pricing and Codex pricing guides cover each agent's cost.
Autonomous Agents and Workspace Tools
Beyond coding, each plan bundles an agent. On ChatGPT Pro it is a dot, an always-on agent. OpenAI's dots announcement says the first dot is included in Pro at no extra cost. The Pro rollout excludes the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the UK. OpenAI has not published usage terms for dots after the first month.
On Claude Max, Cowork now lives inside Claude. Anthropic merged the two on September 16, 2026. Anthropic's Cowork announcement says the change is rolling out to Pro and Max. Max also carries everything in Claude Pro, including Claude in Chrome, Microsoft 365 and Claude Design, Slides and Docs.
Image creation on ChatGPT Pro comes with a caveat. The ChatGPT pricing page states that Pro includes unlimited and faster image creation subject to abuse guardrails. However, the learn.chatgpt.com pricing documentation specifies that image generations use included Codex and ChatGPT Work limits approximately 3x to 5x faster on average.
Billing Structures and Annual Costs
Both plans bill monthly only. That covers Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500, Max 5x and Max 20x.
Over 12 months, Pro 100 or Max 5x costs $1,200. Pro 200 or Max 20x costs $2,400. Pro 500 costs $6,000. Claude Pro is the exception on the Claude side. Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month with $200 billed up front for the year. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month.
Neither is a workspace plan. ChatGPT Pro is a personal plan. Claude's pricing table lists no single sign-on (SSO), central billing or admin controls for Max. Teams that need those belong on a workspace plan. ChatGPT Business starts at two users. Standard seats cost $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually. Premium seats cost $125, or $100 billed annually. Premium gives 5x Standard usage and no five-hour limit. Two Premium seats on annual billing cost $2,400 a year. Our ChatGPT Pro pricing and Claude pricing guides break down each ladder.
Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro Selection Criteria and Tradeoffs
Decide on two points: the five-hour window and the coding agent you use. Because list prices match at $100 and $200 per month, workflow constraints dictate the decision rather than subscription cost.
Certain organizations should avoid both plans. Teams that need SSO or central admin should skip personal Pro and Max accounts. A workspace plan such as ChatGPT Business fits them better. Light users should skip both too. If you seldom hit the limits on ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, stay at $20 a month. Against a $100 tier, that saves $960 a year.
Our recommendation would change under specific operational updates from Anthropic or OpenAI. If Anthropic dropped the five-hour window on Max, ChatGPT Pro would lose its clearest limit advantage. The same goes if Anthropic added a speed mode like Ultrafast. If OpenAI added a five-hour limit to Pro, the two plans would meter use the same way. Tools would then be the only split. For the value case on each, read whether ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max are worth it.
The Verdict
Choose ChatGPT Pro if your technical work centers on OpenAI Codex, ChatGPT Work, and long development sessions that cannot accommodate rolling five-hour session cutoffs. It is also the only one of the two with a $500 tier and a speed mode.
Choose Claude Max if your daily work runs on Claude Code and Claude. At $100 or $200 a month, Max gives you 5x or 20x Claude Pro's usage per session.
If neither tool is part of your work yet, start on ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at $20. Move up when you keep hitting the limits.
