ChatGPT Plus vs Pro: The Differences Side by Side

What changes between the $20 Plus plan and the $100 to $500 Pro tiers, with a pick by workload.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Oct 1, 2026

ChatGPT Pro is Plus with more usage and more access, at $100 to $500 a month instead of $20.

At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems for small and mid-sized businesses, and we see the plan bill alongside the work it buys.

Pro drops the five-hour limit that Plus has. It adds Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra, a dot, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and maximum deep research and memory. The pricing page lists Pro image creation as unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. Astra Ultrafast comes only on Pro 500.

Both plans run in the same ChatGPT app. The ChatGPT pricing page labels Pro "Best for research and coding" and Plus "Best for advanced work and productivity".

Pick by how often the Plus five-hour limit stops your work. If you rarely reach that limit, Pro adds $80 to $480 a month for headroom you would not use. If the limit stops your Codex or research work several times a week, Pro removes it. Per-model allowances still apply.

What Changes from ChatGPT Plus to Pro

Pro keeps everything in Plus, drops the five-hour limit and comes in three monthly tiers.

Price is the first difference. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month. ChatGPT Pro offers Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and Pro 500 at $500 per month according to OpenAI's help article on Pro tiers. Pro is billed monthly only, with no annual billing or prepaying for months ahead.

The five-hour limit is the second difference. Plus restricts message counts within rolling five-hour blocks. Pro currently has none. Each Pro model still has an allowance that resets, and weekly limits may also apply.

Pro also introduces features absent on Plus. They are Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, a dot and longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions. Pro also lists maximum deep research and memory, and unlimited image creation subject to abuse guardrails. On Pro 500, OpenAI adds Astra Ultrafast in Codex and Work.

For standard writing and research, ChatGPT Plus handles daily requirements at $20 per month. When the Plus limit stops billable work every week, try Pro 100. To review whether that financial jump pays off for your specific role, see our analysis on whether ChatGPT Pro is worth it.

Usage Limits in ChatGPT Plus vs Pro Workflows

Plus has a five-hour limit and Pro currently does not.

OpenAI's usage docs give Plus estimates of local messages per five-hour period. OpenAI calls them estimates rather than fixed limits. GPT-6 Astra allows 5 to 45. GPT-6.1 Sol, in Work and Codex, allows 15 to 160. GPT-6 Sol allows 15 to 150. GPT-6 Luna allows 350 to 3,000. Task size, context, reasoning and tool use all change the real count.

On Pro, each model has its own allowance that resets. At the limit, ChatGPT shows the reset time when it is available. OpenAI notes in its documentation that weekly limits may also apply across Pro plans.

OpenAI stated in its DevDay 2026 recap that the Pro 500 tier provides 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance. OpenAI has not published usage multiples for Pro 100 or Pro 200 relative to Plus. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100. Pro 500 has the most of the three.

New subscriptions to Pro 200 receive a lower usage allowance than Pro 200 previously offered. The monthly price remains $200. Subscribers active at the eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keep the earlier allowance through October 29, 2026 as long as their subscription stays active. OpenAI has not published the exact proportion of that reduction.

Model Access and Pro Reasoning Capabilities

ChatGPT Pro grants access to Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra and introduces token acceleration via Astra Ultrafast on its highest tier.

ChatGPT Plus provides access to advanced reasoning models with GPT-6. ChatGPT Pro unlocks Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI does not publish a benchmark comparing Pro reasoning with Plus.

In ChatGPT, GPT-6.1 Sol is accessible inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not in general chat. OpenAI documentation also states that GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on all subscription plans on October 14, 2026.

Outside of Astra Ultrafast on Pro 500, OpenAI does not publish speed differences between Plus and Pro for standard conversation models.

Astra Ultrafast is the exception. According to OpenAI speed documentation, GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than GPT-6 Astra in Standard mode within Codex. This comparison measures token generation speed, not total task completion time.

Ultrafast consumes included subscription limits at 8x the Standard rate. On purchased credits, the rate is 6x. Ultrafast is available only in Codex and ChatGPT Work, on Pro 500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. It is not available in standard chat, on Pro 100, on Pro 200, or in workspaces requiring inference residency outside the United States. Fast mode on supported models consumes subscription limits at 2.5x the Standard rate.

Codex and ChatGPT Work Session Allowances

Codex and ChatGPT Work share a unified compute allowance across both subscriptions, but ChatGPT Pro supports longer active sessions.

A demanding automated research run in ChatGPT Work directly reduces remaining capacity for software development in Codex. ChatGPT Plus provides expanded access to ChatGPT Work across desktop, web, and mobile, alongside expanded Codex usage.

Pro gets longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions. OpenAI does not publish how much longer those sessions run.

Subscribers on either tier who reach their allowance can purchase flexible credits to continue working without upgrading. Per OpenAI credit documentation, credits apply to eligible usage in Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Credits remain valid for 12 months from purchase, are non-refundable, and are non-transferable. OpenAI has not published the dollar price per credit package. At launch, purchasing credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Astra Ultrafast.

Always-On Dots, Image Creation, and Research Tools

Pro adds a dot and lists more image creation, deep research and memory than Plus.

A dot is an always-on background agent. Per OpenAI's announcement on dots, the first dot is included in ChatGPT Pro at no extra cost. The Plus card on the pricing page does not list a dot. At launch, dot availability excludes users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (UK). OpenAI has not yet published usage terms after the first month. Learn more in our guide to ChatGPT dots explained.

Image creation differs too. The ChatGPT pricing page lists more complex and accurate image creation for Plus. For Pro, it lists unlimited and faster image creation, specified as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails. However, OpenAI's pricing documentation notes that image generations consume included Codex and Work allowances approximately 3 to 5x faster on average.

Deep research and memory follow tiered capacity labels. Plus offers expanded deep research and expanded memory and context. Pro provides maximum deep research and maximum memory and context. OpenAI does not publish what "Maximum" means in numbers.

Subscription Selection by Daily Workload

Plus fits most everyday work. Pro fits work that Plus limits keep stopping.

Individual professionals, writers, and administrative leads should select ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. The Plus estimates run to 350 to 3,000 local messages per five hours on GPT-6 Luna. If drafting and summaries fit inside them, a $100 plan adds cost you would not use. If $20 per month exceeds your budget, compare features on lower tiers in our ChatGPT Go vs Plus comparison.

Engineers who exhaust the five-hour limit in Codex should choose ChatGPT Pro 100 at $100 per month. Pro 100 has no five-hour limit. It costs $100 to $400 less than the higher tiers.

If you want a dot, choose Pro or a ChatGPT Business Premium seat. On Pro, the first dot is included at no extra cost outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.

If you run Codex for most of the working day, read our ChatGPT Pro 500 guide first. OpenAI says Pro 500 has 25x the Plus allowance. It is the only Pro tier with Astra Ultrafast. At $6,000 a year, it pays only if blocked hours cost you more than that.

Small teams of two or more should consider ChatGPT Business workspace accounts instead of multiple individual Pro subscriptions. A Standard Business seat costs $25 per user monthly (or $20 billed annually) with the same five-hour estimates as Plus. A Premium Business seat costs $125 per user monthly (or $100 billed annually), offering 5x Standard usage, no five-hour cap, and centralized administrative controls.

ChatGPT Pro is not suitable for casual personal users who rarely encounter message limits. Paying $1,200 to $6,000 annually for unused compute capacity wastes budget when Plus at $240 annually or on-demand credit purchases resolve temporary volume spikes.

Our recommendation would shift if OpenAI introduced annual billing discounts for Pro plans, allowed Pro 100 users to purchase Ultrafast access via credits, or adjusted baseline allowances on Pro 200.

Business plans start at 2 users, so a solo buyer chooses between Plus and Pro.

The Verdict

ChatGPT Plus remains the practical choice for most professionals, researchers, and content teams. At $20 a month, it includes advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded Codex usage and expanded deep research. Unless rolling five-hour limits repeatedly stop your work, the 5x price increase to Pro 100 offers minimal financial return.

ChatGPT Pro wins when the Plus five-hour limit stops real work. It also wins if you want a dot or Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra. Start on Pro 100. Move up only after you hit its allowance.

ChatGPT Pro 500 costs $500 a month. OpenAI says it carries 25x the Plus allowance. Its Astra Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster in Codex, and uses included limits at 8x the Standard rate. For a team, compare it with ChatGPT Business Premium seats at $125 per user per month.
