Claude Fable 5.1 is the upgrade, and for cache-heavy or compliance-bound teams, it is worth the switch. For everyone else, Fable 5 still handles the same core work at the same base price.

What Changed from Fable 5 to Fable 5.1

Claude Fable 5.1 keeps Fable 5's core job and improves three things around it: cache pricing, benchmark scores, and enterprise privacy. The model still targets coding, research, and knowledge work, and it still shares an architecture with the restricted Mythos variant.

The base per-token rates did not move. Fresh input costs $10 per million and output costs $50 per million on both models, so a first look at the price sheet shows no change.

What moved is the cache-read rate and the safeguards. Anthropic cut cached input from $1 to $0.25 per million, raised the published benchmark scores, and added an enterprise zero-retention option that Fable 5 never offered.

Because the two models share weights and surfaces, moving from Fable 5 to Fable 5.1 is mostly a model-name swap plus a re-test. You are not learning a new platform or changing vendors.

Where the Fable 5.1 Price Saving Lands

The saving lands only on cached input, so a workload that never reuses context pays exactly what Fable 5 charged. Anthropic cut the cache-read rate from $1 to $0.25 per million tokens and left fresh input and output untouched.

That single change is the whole of the advertised discount. Anthropic prices a Fable 5.1 cache hit at 0.025 times the base input rate, where every other Claude model charges 0.1 times.

Anthropic puts the effect at about 25% less for typical workloads and up to roughly 45% for highly agentic work, because those runs re-read a large cached context on every step. A light, one-shot workload sees little of that.

How Much Fable 5.1 Improved on Benchmarks

Claude Fable 5.1 posts markedly higher accuracy than Fable 5 on the tests Anthropic published, with the biggest gains in agentic research and coding. On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, Fable 5.1 scored 52.6%, more than double the 24.7% Anthropic reproduced for Fable 5.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, an agentic coding test, Fable 5.1 scored 55.8%. Anthropic also reports that the model solved real-world edge cases in testing by the investment firm Millennium that prior models, and even experienced engineers, had failed to resolve.

The practical read is that the gains show up on hard, multi-step work. If your tasks already ran fine on Fable 5, the higher scores may not change your day. If they pushed Fable 5 to its edge cases, the jump is real.

Enterprise Privacy and Data Retention

The clearest upgrade is data retention, where Fable 5.1 adds an option Fable 5 lacked. Fable 5 carried a mandatory 30-day safety retention on business accounts and no full zero-retention setting.

Fable 5.1 introduces Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS), which let enterprise customers keep data in their own cloud storage rather than with Anthropic. Anthropic is rolling EFS out in phases through late 2026 and offers zero data retention to eligible enterprise customers on request in the interim.

What the Safeguards Change for Regulated Teams

Claude Fable 5.1 blocks fewer harmless inputs than Fable 5, which cuts a real friction point for security and research teams. Anthropic reports that the safeguards now block 60% fewer benign inputs in cybersecurity than before.

Fable 5 handled high-risk cyber and biology prompts by falling back to Claude Opus 4.8, and Anthropic reported that more than 95% of Fable 5 sessions never triggered a fallback. Fable 5.1 keeps strict interventions on genuinely high-risk prompts and still does not support exploit creation.

The access paths do not change, so the switch is small. Both models run in the Claude apps, Claude Code, Cowork, and the Anthropic API, and both bill per token at $10 input and $50 output.
