Anthropic made Claude Fable 5.1 generally available on September 1, 2026, as its flagship model for coding, research, and knowledge work (Anthropic). It shares an architecture with the restricted Mythos 5.1, but Fable 5.1 is the version most teams can turn on today.

Where You Can Use Claude Fable 5.1

Claude Fable 5.1 runs in the Claude apps, in Claude Code, in Cowork, and through the Anthropic API. Anthropic put the model into general availability on September 1, 2026 (Anthropic).

Each surface fits a different job. The list below maps the model to the kind of work you do.

How to Access Claude Fable 5.1 in the Claude Apps

In the Claude apps, you open Claude Fable 5.1 by signing in and selecting it from the model picker. It is the default flagship for business and research work (Anthropic).

Sign in at Claude.ai or in the desktop or mobile app with your Anthropic account. Then start a new chat and confirm that Fable 5.1 is the model you have selected.

Give it a real task in plain language. You can ask it to draft a memo, summarize a long report, or read a scanned document, and you can attach files for it to work from.

Claude Code and Cowork run Claude Fable 5.1 with effort settings that trade accuracy against cost. Claude Code defaults to High effort for advanced coding, and Cowork defaults to Medium (Anthropic).

In Claude Code, point the tool at your repository and describe the change you want. Fable 5.1 can write, review, and fix code across many files in one session, which suits multi-step jobs like debugging a whole codebase.

Lower the effort setting when a task is simple. A lower setting costs less and often returns similar results on routine work, so reserve High effort for the hard problems.

Cowork is built for longer, agent-style sessions. Keep a human check on any step that changes files, sends output to a client, or touches regulated data.

How to Use Claude Fable 5.1 through the Anthropic API

Developers reach Claude Fable 5.1 through the Anthropic API by creating a key and naming the model in each request. This is the path for building the model into your own apps and automations.

Create an API key in your Anthropic account, then send a request that sets Fable 5.1 as the model. Copy the exact model string from Anthropic's documentation, since names and endpoints can change.

Fable 5.1 bills per token, at the same $10 per million input and $50 per million output as Fable 5 (Anthropic). Its cache reads cost $0.25 per million, down from $1, so reusing a large, stable prompt across steps is where your bill drops.

Start with one prompt, confirm the output, then wire it into your workflow. Keep your API key out of any public code, and add error handling for requests that hit a limit.

Which Plan or Tier You Need

You need a Claude team or enterprise plan, or API access, to use Claude Fable 5.1 for business work (Anthropic). The model is generally available across Anthropic's main products and API endpoints.

Individual and team accounts reach it in the Claude apps and Claude Code. Larger organizations use enterprise plans, which is also where the new privacy controls arrive first.

The restricted Mythos 5.1 model is a separate track. It is limited to vetted access programs in cybersecurity and the life sciences, so most teams will use Fable 5.1, not Mythos.

Run Your First Task in Claude Fable 5.1

For a first task, pick one real job you already do and run it once, start to finish. A small, real test tells you more than a benchmark chart about whether the model fits your work.

Say you review contracts. Open the Claude apps, select Fable 5.1, attach one contract, and ask for a plain-language summary plus a list of unusual clauses. Read the output against what you already know to be true in that document.

Across the regulated workflows we automate for SMB teams, the step that stalls a rollout is rarely the first prompt. It is the data-retention sign-off, so we settle that before any client document goes in.

Once one task works, expand slowly. Route low-risk, high-volume work to a smaller or cheaper model, and reserve Fable 5.1 for the steps where an error would carry real cost.

Set Up Zero Data Retention Before Sensitive Work

Turn on zero data retention before you send Claude Fable 5.1 any regulated or sensitive data. Anthropic offers zero data retention to eligible enterprise customers on request, ahead of a wider rollout (Anthropic).

Fable 5.1 introduces Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS), which let enterprise customers keep data in their own cloud storage rather than with Anthropic. Anthropic is rolling EFS out in phases through late 2026.

Until EFS reaches your account, ask Anthropic whether you qualify for zero data retention now. Teams under HIPAA, GDPR, or similar rules should confirm the current setting before any protected data goes in.

This is a change from Fable 5, which carried a mandatory 30-day safety retention and no full zero-retention option. If retention blocked you before, Fable 5.1 is worth a fresh look.

Common Gotchas to Check First

The biggest gotcha is that the advertised savings land only on cached input. Base rates are unchanged from Fable 5 at $10 per million input and $50 per million output, and the cache-read cut from $1 to $0.25 is the whole of the saving (Anthropic).

So a workload that never reuses context pays what Fable 5 paid. Measure what share of your input arrives as cache hits before you forecast a lower bill.

Anthropic has not published Fable 5.1's context window, rate limits, or file-upload caps as of September 2026. Plan below the limits you know, and confirm current figures on Anthropic's documentation before a workload runs close to any cap.

The privacy rollout is also phased. EFS arrives in stages through late 2026, so verify what your account has today rather than what the announcement promises.
