OpenClaw: Self-Hosted Control on Local Hardware

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant for people who want their passwords and email credentials on their own machine instead of a remote cloud computer. Maintained by the OpenClaw Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the project holds about 390,000 GitHub stars and is released under the MIT license.

The software runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows. A local Gateway process binds to loopback and routes requests between messaging channels and your selected model plugin. Credentials live in .env files and local config on your machine, not in a managed vault.

OpenClaw costs nothing for the software itself, but you pay for model inference tokens. Muse runs inside a dedicated Secure VM, with a separate Sentinel agent on the same machine that approves its internet requests. Checkout uses Stripe Link's purchase protections (damaged or lost items, price drops, no-fee returns) with explicit approval required before purchase.

Grok Bot, introduced in August 2026 by SpaceXAI LLC, provides background agents that have their own computer and keep working 24/7. Grok Bot works across web platforms and software tools, including applications that lack clean Application Programming Interface (API) connections or Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.

You can do a multi-step task while Grok Bot follows along, and it saves the task as a routine, takes corrections, and runs it on its own next time.

Access requires an active subscription. Claude and ChatGPT: General Assistants with Work Connectors

Claude by Anthropic and ChatGPT by OpenAI both provide general assistant workspaces with scheduled task features. While neither replaces a personal phone concierge, both handle multi-step research, document creation, and scheduled tasks across connected apps.

On OpenAI's side, ChatGPT pricing includes a Free tier, Plus at $20 monthly, and Pro at $100 monthly. ChatGPT runs event-triggered tasks and includes ChatGPT Work on web and mobile to produce finished deliverables from connected Gmail and Slack data.

On Anthropic's side, Claude pricing starts with a Free tier, Pro at $20 monthly ($17 monthly billed annually), and Max from $100 monthly. Claude Pro hands off and schedules tasks, connects external tools via Model Context Protocol (MCP), and integrates with Claude Code and Microsoft 365 tools.

Consumer tiers on both services use conversation data for model training by default, but both provide explicit opt-out toggles in account privacy settings. Both are available today without an invite.

Reasons to Remain on the Instinct Waitlist

Waiting for an Instinct invite makes sense if you want a text-first assistant that can also make phone calls for you, though Instinct Concierge is in early access for select users and TechCrunch reported no price for it. Instinct Concierge focuses on telephone tasks, such as sorting out cable-bill problems or getting on a dentist's cancellation list, as reported by TechCrunch.

Other assistants also place phone calls, but with different tradeoffs. Poke Ultra includes phone calls through Poke Human, but costs $199 monthly. Google AI Ultra includes AI-powered calling for local businesses in the US. If you want phone-call automation integrated directly with your calendar and SMS without paying Poke Ultra's rate, waiting on Instinct remains a reasonable path.

You must weigh that convenience against documented beta security incidents reported by TechCrunch. Peter Yang said Instinct indexed his emails without permission. Claire Vo reported receiving an email summary three hours after disconnecting Google integration, and Instinct said emails were stored in plain text. Alex Cohen showed Instinct could be phished, then deleted his account. Katie Jacobs Stanton reported Instinct sent an email on her behalf without checking first.

Instinct revised its Terms of Service on August 26, 2026, and added a deletion tool in settings. TheStreet reported that users including Jason Sobin, James Gui, Riya Agarwal and John Harper said Instinct stopped replying on the night of September 22 and the morning of September 23, and scheduled actions stalled with no error notice.
