What Instinct Is and Who Makes It

Instinct handles personal chores such as booking rides, managing calendars and replying to email, and you reach it by text message or phone call.

Spear Street Technology, Inc. operates Instinct under the name "Instinct", and Vellum, a competing AI vendor, reports the company is based in San Francisco. TechFundingNews reported that founder Noah Shinn registered Spear Street Technology in California in April 2026. TechCrunch reported on August 24, 2026 that Spear Street Technology was operating in stealth, per PitchBook.

The official Instinct homepage describes Instinct as "a personal assistant that understands what you're working on and what's important to you." Its primary call to action invites users to "Text Instinct to get started" through an account sign-in screen.

TechCrunch reported that users can text the agent or call it via text message or WhatsApp to book appointments, schedule rides, organize inboxes, and find flights. Vellum reports that users can reach Instinct by text or call, including iMessage and WhatsApp. The Instinct Terms of Service (ToS) last revised on August 26, 2026 do not mention iMessage or WhatsApp directly, but specify that certain portions of the services allow Instinct to contact users via telephone or text messages. Architecture and Connected Systems

Vellum, a competing AI vendor, reports that Instinct runs a persistent cloud computer with browser access and cached credentials on Spear Street Technology's servers.

According to the Instinct homepage, Instinct connects directly to existing applications and devices, including email, messaging, screen, audio, and location data, without requiring users to download custom client applications. The Instinct Privacy Policy details that collected inputs include keystrokes, "cursor positions", email, messaging, "audio and voice data", and "precise geolocation." TechCrunch reported that Instinct can receive screen captures, cursor movements, and keyboard inputs, though the official privacy policy text omits the exact term "screen captures."

The underlying model architecture presents conflicting details across industry reports and official disclosures. Vellum states that Instinct uses a proprietary model without options to route tasks to local hardware or alternative model providers. However, Instinct's own privacy policy explicitly lists "Third-party AI model providers" among the entities with which it shares collected user data. Spear Street Technology has issued no official documentation naming its underlying models.

The legal authority users grant Instinct is broad. The Instinct Terms of Service state that users appoint Instinct "as your agent to enter into agreements, commitments or transactions on your behalf...Any such agreements or commitments shall be binding on you as if entered into directly by you."

For voice-driven interactions, TechCrunch reported on September 17, 2026 that a feature called Instinct Concierge is rolling out in early access to select users. TechCrunch described it as a white-glove service designed to handle phone calls, restaurant bookings lacking online reservation options, dentist cancellation lists, and cable billing problems. CellCog, another competing AI vendor, reported that phone calls through Instinct Concierge became available on September 16, 2026.

Documented Tasks and User Chores

People using Instinct hand it everyday digital chores, from inbox cleanup to travel bookings.

TechCrunch quoted founder Noah Shinn stating that early users have "planned cross-country road trips, bought weekly groceries and concert tickets, and cancelled hundreds of dollars of subscriptions." PYMNTS reported that early adopters used Instinct for managing calendars, responding to messages, booking rides to the airport, shopping for insurance policies, negotiating household bills, and searching for apartment rentals.

SiliconANGLE reported, citing The Wall Street Journal, that Shinn told the Journal that one early adopter used Instinct to buy a house. Vellum reported other specific workflows, including monitoring sold-out event tickets, managing school logistics, coordinating vendors in India, lowering a Comcast cable bill, and handling honeymoon flight verification.

Instinct has also gone down. TheStreet via Yahoo Finance reported outages on the night of September 22 and morning of September 23, 2026. Users including Jason Sobin, James Gui, Riya Agarwal, and John Harper reported that the agent stopped replying to queries, and scheduled actions stalled without an error notice or an official status page update.

Access Model and Pricing Structure

Instinct operates as an invitation-only service with no public subscription fees published on its website.

Vellum reports that access requires joining a waitlist or getting an invite from an existing member. PYMNTS reported that Instinct runs an invitation-only beta while Spear Street Technology secures more compute, and that Instinct sometimes operates at capacity with slower response times. Users must be 18 years of age or older according to the official terms.

Instinct publishes no pricing tiers on its homepage. The Terms of Service state that users may be required to pay fees to access or use certain features, that payments are processed in U.S. dollars, and that all payments are non-refundable unless required by applicable law. Vellum and CellCog report that Instinct is free during its invite-only beta. PYMNTS reported that CEO Noah Shinn has said he does not want to charge users directly, indicating the company could pursue alternative monetization options such as advertising.

Data Privacy and Security Considerations

Early testers reported privacy and security problems with how Instinct reads and stores personal email.

On August 24, 2026, TechCrunch's Sarah Perez reported multiple incidents documented by early testers on social media. Peter Yang posted that Instinct indexed and retained his emails without his permission and did not let him delete them from Instinct's records. Claire Vo posted that she disconnected Instinct from Google at 11 AM and received a summary of her emails at 2 PM the same day. Instinct said the emails were stored in plain text for later searches. Alex Cohen showed Instinct could be phished through email, then deleted his account, writing that it was unsafe to grant AI read and write access to an inbox. Katie Jacobs Stanton reported that Instinct sent an email on her behalf without checking with her first, noting that users often trade privacy and control for hyper-personalized tools without understanding the full implications.

Contractual terms governing user data have evolved. TechCrunch reported that prior to August 26, 2026, the terms granted Spear Street Technology a "sub-licensable, worldwide, perpetual and irrevocable license" to use and modify user materials, including for training AI models. Instinct revised its terms on August 26, 2026, removing the words "perpetual", "irrevocable", and "sub-licensable." The current agreement specifies that Spear Street Technology claims no ownership over user materials, though it may use submitted data to develop, maintain, and train AI models unless users opt out.

Under the revised privacy policy, model training on user inputs is active by default. Users can submit an opt-out request through account settings, though Instinct notes that data flagged for safety reviews may still be used for model training. The Terms of Service also state that materials stored in a feature called "Vault" are excluded from AI model training. Disconnecting a third-party service does not automatically delete previously indexed data; users must request deletion separately at app.instinct.com/workspace. Funding Rounds and Valuation Figures

Spear Street Technology has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in venture capital, and the reported figures differ by outlet.

Noah Shinn announced the round on X on August 26, 2026, and TechCrunch reported that Instinct raised a $250 million Series B co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark, valuing the business at $2.5 billion and bringing total funding to $350 million. TechFundingNews reported these identical round figures. However, published financial details conflict across reports. PYMNTS reported in September that Spear Street Technology last raised $250 million in August at a $2.25 billion valuation, differing from its own earlier reporting and TechCrunch's figures.

Pre-Series B funding accounts also vary. SiliconANGLE, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that Instinct previously raised $100 million from a consortium including Conviction Partners and Greenoaks. In contrast, TechFundingNews reported that initial backing from Conviction's Pranav Reddy and Greenoaks' Neil Mehta valued the company at $50 million, followed by a $75 million Series A round led by Kleiner Perkins partner Mamoon Hamid at a $500 million valuation. TechCrunch reported hearing from multiple investors that Kleiner Perkins and Conviction had invested and that those rounds had closed.

Venture discussions expanded in September 2026. PYMNTS reported, citing The Information, that Spear Street Technology was in discussions to raise $1 billion at a target valuation of $10 billion, noting that the invitation-only user base had passed 100,000 users. TechCrunch similarly reported that Instinct was negotiating a $1 billion investment at a $10 billion valuation.

Market Context and Alternative Autonomous Agents

Instinct sits within a growing category of consumer-facing autonomous agents designed to execute real-world tasks across external applications.

Instinct is a genuine software product operated by Spear Street Technology, Inc. with published terms and privacy documentation. The Instinct homepage says no new software is needed, and CellCog describes the interface as text or call only. Instinct is entirely separate from the dating application named Instinct and the veterinary management software known as Instinct Science.

Other systems in this category explore alternative balances between user privacy, cloud infrastructure, and task automation. Who this is not for: anyone connecting work email, regulated financial accounts, or an inbox they cannot risk giving read and write access to.

This evaluation would change if Spear Street Technology published data retention periods or offered a self-hosted option.
