Is Instinct AI Free?

Instinct AI has no published price, and two competing artificial intelligence (AI) vendors, Vellum and CellCog, report it is free during the invite-only beta. At Layer3Labs, we build automations that connect to client inboxes, so we price any agent by what it can read as well as what it charges.

The official Instinct Terms of Service state that users may be required to pay fees to access certain features in the future, and all payments are non-refundable.

Using Instinct today means giving it your email, messages and other personal data, and its terms let Spear Street Technology train AI models on that data unless you opt out.

What Instinct Costs Right Now

No one has reported paying for Instinct. The instinct.com homepage lists no plans or prices.

Vellum and CellCog both report that admitted beta users pay nothing, and Vellum says access comes through the waitlist or an invite from an existing member. Access remains restricted while Spear Street Technology expands its compute capacity, according to reporting from PYMNTS.

The Instinct homepage says no new software is needed, because Instinct works through the phone and computer you already have, by text or call.

Terms of Service Provisions for Future Fees

Spear Street Technology has written a fee clause into the Instinct contract. The Instinct Terms of Service, last revised on August 26, 2026, specify that users may be required to pay fees to access or use certain features.

The agreement stipulates that all payments must be made in U.S. dollars and remain strictly non-refundable unless local consumer statutes require otherwise. Users must be 18 years of age or older to agree to these legal obligations and use Instinct.

Pricing is unpublished and can change, so check the fee clause in the Instinct Terms of Service before you rely on this.

Revenue Models and Potential Advertising

Instinct is funded by venture capital, and no subscription revenue has been reported. TechCrunch and TechFundingNews reported that Instinct closed a 250 million dollar Series B round co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark, bringing total funding to 350 million dollars.

Valuation figures vary across industry reports. TechCrunch and TechFundingNews cite a 2.5 billion dollar valuation for the August financing, though a September PYMNTS article put that August round at 2.25 billion dollars, while PYMNTS's own earlier article said 2.5 billion.

PYMNTS reported that Noah Shinn, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Spear Street Technology, has said he does not want to charge users, and that the company could seek other revenue such as advertising. In September 2026, The Information reported that the startup was in discussions to raise another 1 billion dollars at a 10 billion dollar valuation as its user base surpassed 100,000 people.

Data Collection and Privacy Costs

The practical cost of using Instinct today is the data you share rather than a cash fee. According to the Instinct Privacy Policy, Instinct collects keystrokes, cursor positions, email contents, messaging logs, audio data, and precise geolocation.

Instinct uses your data to train AI models unless you opt out. TechCrunch reported that the terms before August 26, 2026 granted a perpetual, irrevocable and sub-licensable license to user materials. The revised terms removed that language but let Spear Street Technology use your data for AI model training.

You can opt out of future model training at app.instinct.com/settings, though Instinct may still use data flagged for safety review for training. Furthermore, disconnecting an email or calendar integration does not remove historical records, which requires a separate deletion request submitted through app.instinct.com/workspace.

Documented Security and Reliability Incidents

Early testers reported problems with how Instinct handles inbox data. TechCrunch's Sarah Perez reported that Peter Yang found his emails indexed and retained without his permission, and that Instinct later added a deletion tool in settings.

Claire Vo posted that after disconnecting Instinct from Google at 11:00 AM, she received an email summary at 2:00 PM. Instinct said the emails were stored in plain text for later searches. Alex Cohen showed Instinct could be phished and deleted his account, noting concerns over granting read and write access to personal inboxes.

Katie Jacobs Stanton reported that Instinct sent an email on her behalf without checking first, cautioning that users trade control for automation. Instinct also had an outage. TheStreet, via Yahoo Finance, reported that users said Instinct stopped replying on the night of September 22 and the morning of September 23, 2026.

Instinct Concierge and High-Touch Services

Instinct Concierge is a white-glove add-on that makes phone calls for you, according to TechCrunch. TechCrunch reported on September 17, 2026, that this early-access service performs high-touch tasks like calling restaurants without digital reservation systems, joining dental cancellation queues, and sorting out cable-bill problems.

CellCog reported that phone calls through Instinct Concierge became available on September 16, 2026. Under the Instinct Terms of Service, you appoint Instinct as your agent, and agreements Instinct enters for you bind you as if you had made them yourself.

If Spear Street Technology later charges for Instinct Concierge, the fee clause in the Terms of Service already allows it.

Alternative Assistants and Cost Structures

Other personal agents are priced differently from Instinct. OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are open-source and self-hosted, so you pay for your own hosting and model use instead of a subscription.

Conditions That Would Change Our Assessment

Instinct is not for organizations or individuals who handle sensitive communications, confidential corporate files, or protected client records. If you require zero-data-retention guarantees, isolated infrastructure, or local model execution, you should evaluate dedicated business tools rather than consumer beta agents.

Our assessment would change if Spear Street Technology published a price, stated data retention periods, or dropped the safety-review exception to the training opt-out.
