Which llms.txt Generator Fits Your Site

Your platform determines the right generator to choose. When your platform publishes the file natively, using an external web generator creates unnecessary maintenance overhead. External generators fit platforms that provide no native option, or scenarios where you want exact editorial control over every link and summary description before publishing.

Select your generator based on your current hosting environment and technical preferences:

• Shopify: Use Shopify's built-in file at /llms.txt, which requires no app installation.

Web Generators

Web generators produce a static llms.txt file that you host yourself. These tools fit websites built on custom codebases, static site generators, or platforms without native plugin ecosystems. You can edit the downloaded file in any text editor before you upload it, and the Layer3Labs generator also lets you edit every line in the browser.

The Layer3Labs llms.txt generator is completely free and requires no account registration. It includes six site-type presets for software, developer docs, online stores, local businesses, blogs, and agency sites. You can populate links by reading a sitemap up to 60 pages, pasting a URL list, or adding entries manually. The tool extracts each page's title, meta description, and first heading, allowing you to edit every line, reorganize sections, and add key facts under summaries. It runs a live format validation check matching our llms.txt checker before you download or copy your file. It produces only standard llms.txt files, does not generate llms-full.txt, and does not automate ongoing file updates.

The WordLift llms.txt generator is a free tool requiring no account sign-up. It accepts a homepage URL and lets you specify whether to crawl links from the header, navigation, footer, or all three areas. You copy the generated plain-text output and save it manually at your site's root directory. WordLift suggests its enterprise service for larger sites via a demo request. WordLift's page does not publish a page limit, llms-full.txt support or a download button.

llmstxtgenerate.com scans a website homepage, follows internal links, and accepts sitemap URLs or pasted link lists without requiring an account. Users can click a download button to export a free llms.txt file, or validate existing files using an on-page validator. llmstxtgenerate.com does not publish an in-browser line editor or a specific page scanning limit. Generating an llms-full.txt file requires a one-time payment of $2.99.

Built-in Generators in WordPress Plugins

WordPress site owners can generate llms.txt files inside their existing search engine optimization (SEO) plugins. The plugins publish the file at your site root and keep it updated without a manual upload. If you already use Yoast SEO, Rank Math or AIOSEO, enable its built-in generator rather than deploying an external tool.

Yoast SEO includes an llms.txt generator in its free version, managed under Settings > Site features > AI tools > LLMS.txt. Its automated engine populates up to 5 recently updated posts or pages published within the last 12 months, prioritizing cornerstone content, along with up to 5 categories or tags. On a large site, that keeps the automatic file short unless you pick pages by hand. Users can select specific pages manually, but manual selection does not support blog posts. Yoast writes a live file at your site root and updates it on a weekly schedule without overwriting an existing file. It does not operate on multisite networks, and Yoast does not publish support for llms-full.txt.

Rank Math includes an Advanced llms.txt Generator across all plan tiers, including the Free version. Once the module is enabled, configure it at General Settings > Edit llms.txt. The file starts empty until you select post types, taxonomy terms, and a posts limit that defaults to 100 items. It automatically excludes pages marked with a noindex tag and provides an Additional Content field for pasting custom links or markdown text. Rank Math serves the live file directly at /llms.txt and provides an in-dashboard preview. Its documentation does not publish support for llms-full.txt.

AIOSEO provides llms.txt generation in both its free Lite plugin and its paid Pro plans. The settings panel lets you include or exclude specific post types, categories, and taxonomies, while defining link limits per post type. The free Lite version handles standard llms.txt generation, but unlocking markdown settings and llms-full.txt generation requires an AIOSEO Pro plan, which lists introductory annual pricing starting at $179.55 for 10 sites.

Platforms That Publish the File for You

Shopify, Wix, Squarespace 7.1, Mintlify and GitBook publish llms.txt for you. If your website runs on one of these systems, you do not need an external generator or third-party extension.

Every Shopify store automatically serves three files: /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /agents.md. These files expose the store name, store URL, sitemap link, policy documents, and product discovery endpoints without installing an app. Store owners can customize the structure using an llms.txt theme template. The LLMs.txt Generator by Gokyo.ai app adds page controls, with a free plan and paid tiers up to $49.99 per month. Shopify's own file needs no app.

Wix automatically creates and maintains an llms.txt file for sites that meet three criteria: an active premium plan, a connected custom domain, and site indexing enabled. Wix users can manually edit the file in their dashboard, but saving manual changes stops Wix's automatic updates. Platforms like Squarespace 7.1 also supply built-in generation.

Mintlify hosts /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt automatically for all documentation sites, keeping files synchronized with published docs while omitting hidden or noindex pages. Mintlify trims descriptions to 300 characters, splits generated files exceeding 100,000 characters into sub-files under /_llms/, and allows a custom file at the project root to override generated output. Similarly, GitBook automatically generates and serves /llms.txt with markdown links and /llms-full.txt with complete documentation text.

Where llms-full.txt Costs Extra

llms-full.txt is a companion file outside the llms.txt proposal that puts the full Markdown text of your pages into one file for language models. While simple index files are widely available in free tools, creating complete text files often introduces fees, key requirements, or plan upgrades. Generating an llms-full.txt file requires crawling every listed URL, extracting raw text, and formatting it into clean markdown. The web tool at llmstxtgenerate.com allows free creation of the index file, but charges a $2.99 one-time download fee for the llms-full.txt bundle.

WordPress plugins follow a similar pattern. AIOSEO includes standard llms.txt files in its free Lite plugin, but reserves llms-full.txt creation and markdown formatting controls for its Pro plan. Similarly, Firecrawl's web tool requires users to provide an API key to run a full generation run, while the Layer3Labs generator does not make llms-full.txt.

Firecrawl's Generator and Its Replacement

The hosted Firecrawl llms.txt generator accepts a single website URL to produce an index file without an API key, but requires a key for full file generation. A banner on the web app states that the dedicated API endpoint is deprecated in favor of Firecrawl's main endpoints, remaining active but unmaintained after June 30, 2025. Firecrawl directs developers toward its open-source automation scripts.

Firecrawl maintains the open-source create-llmstxt-py Python script under the MIT license as the replacement. The script crawls a target website, scrapes page content, and calls OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini model to write concise titles and descriptions. It outputs both a local llms.txt file and an llms-full.txt file, with a command-line flag available to skip the full file. Running the script requires both a Firecrawl API key and an OpenAI API key, with crawling defaulting to a 20-URL maximum.

Developers occasionally confuse generators with the AnswerDotAI llms-txt repository, which houses the original proposal specification. That repository includes an llms_txt2ctx utility designed to convert an existing llms.txt file into a context file for language models. It does not crawl sites, scrape web pages, or generate the initial file.

Who Should Skip a Generator

A site with a handful of pages can skip generators entirely. An llms.txt file is simply a plain text file written in standard Markdown.
