Best Whop Alternatives at a Glance

The closest alternative depends on what you use Whop to sell. Stripe replaces Whop for custom payment processing, and Skool and Circle replace its community spaces. Payhip, Gumroad and Stan Store replace its digital downloads, Kajabi replaces its course delivery, and Patreon replaces its membership tiers.

Skool and Circle still charge a percentage on each sale: 2.9% on Skool Pro and 2% on Circle Professional, on top of $99 and $89 a month.

If you sell standalone files or e-books, Payhip Free Forever costs $0 a month plus a 5% fee, against $143 a month for Kajabi Basic billed annually. If you have developers, Stripe Standard is 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card with no setup or monthly fees.

  • Skool and Circle suit creators organizing discussions, group events, live video calls, and paid membership communities.
  • Gumroad, Payhip, and Stan Store suit sellers distributing digital downloads, social storefront links, and templates.
  • Patreon suits creators funding work through membership tiers, monthly and annual subscriptions, and one-time payments.

Stripe for Raw Payment Infrastructure

Stripe is the direct alternative for operators who use Whop primarily to charge credit cards and invoice clients. Stripe Standard pricing is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction, with no setup fees, monthly fees, or hidden charges. It adds 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards, and 1% when currency conversion is required.

By comparison, Whop fees start at 2.7% + $0.30 for domestic cards, with 1.5% added for international cards and 1% for currency conversion. However, Whop charges additional fees for revenue optimization: 0.8% for Orchestration, 0.5% for Billing, and 2% for Tax and remittance when enabled and tax is collected. With all options active, Whop states a domestic card transaction reaches 6% + $0.30.

Stripe also separates its recurring billing software through Stripe Billing. Its pay-as-you-go tier costs 0.7% of billing volume, including transactions processed on and off Stripe while excluding one-off invoices. Contract plans are $620 per month for up to $100,000 in volume, $1,500 for $250,000, $2,950 for $500,000, and $5,750 for $1,000,000, with overage billed at 0.67%.

For multi-party platforms, Stripe Connect charges $2 per monthly active account when you handle pricing, plus 0.25% + 25¢ per payout sent. A detailed breakdown of these gateway features appears in the Whop vs Stripe comparison.

  • Domestic card processing on Stripe Standard is 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction without monthly platform subscriptions.
  • ACH Direct Debit on Stripe costs 0.8% with a $5.00 cap, compared to Whop's 1.5% fee capped at $5.00.
  • Stripe Instant Payouts cost 1.5% with a 50¢ minimum, while Whop Instant Bank Deposit (RTP) costs 4% + $2.50.
  • Stripe's pricing pages list no community, course or file-delivery apps; Stripe describes Connect as "Embedded payments for platforms and marketplaces."

Skool for Simple Community Hubs

Skool is the primary alternative for community builders who want online courses, videos, and live calls in a single environment. Skool offers two plans: Hobby at $9 per month and Pro at $99 per month. Yearly billing gives two months free. Both plans offer a free trial.

The Hobby plan carries a 10% transaction fee and excludes custom URLs and affiliate features. The Pro plan reduces the transaction fee to 2.9% and includes custom URLs alongside native affiliate management. Both Skool plans provide unlimited members, unlimited courses, unlimited video hosting, and unlimited live calls.

Whop provides community features through modular applications described in its consumer apps documentation, including Chat, Courses, Forums, Events, and Files. Whop's domestic processing fee of 2.7% + $0.30 rises when sellers enable Orchestration (0.8%), Billing (0.5%) or managed tax (2%).

For a community generating $10,000 monthly from 100 members paying $100 each, Skool Pro costs $99 fixed plus $290 in transaction fees (2.9%), totaling $389. On Whop base processing, that same volume incurs $270 in percentage fees plus $30 in fixed fees ($0.30 per charge), totaling $300. Explore the differences further in the Whop vs Skool comparison.

Circle for Brand-Led Communities

Circle provides a community platform for businesses that need courses, live events, and custom domains. Circle structures pricing across four tiers on annual billing: Professional at $89 per month, Business at $199 per month, Scale at $419 per month, and Circle Plus with custom quotes.

Platform transaction fees on Circle scale down as membership plan tiers increase: 2% on Professional, 1% on Business, 1% on Scale, and 0.5% on Circle Plus. Circle provides a 14-day free trial with no credit card required to start.

All Circle plans include unlimited members, and Circle Professional includes community, courses, live events, website, payments, custom domain, and iOS, Android and desktop apps. Admin user seats are capped by tier: 3 on Professional, 5 on Business, 10 on Scale, and unlimited on Circle Plus. Circle Plus includes custom branded mobile apps.

Circle Email Hub costs $99 a month for 10,000 contacts, charged on top of the community plan.

  • Circle Professional provides community, video course hosting, and mobile apps for $89 per month with a 2% transaction fee.
  • Circle Business lowers the transaction fee to 1% while expanding admin seats to 5 for $199 per month.

Gumroad for Marketplace Digital Sales

Gumroad is used to sell digital products, e-books, courses, tutorials and memberships. Gumroad charges no monthly fee. It has served as a Merchant of Record since January 1, 2025, handling sales tax collection and remittance automatically.

Sales made through direct links or creator profile pages incur a 10% + $0.50 fee per transaction. When new customers find and buy through the Gumroad Discover marketplace, Gumroad's fee rises to 30% per transaction. Gumroad pays creators by direct deposit or PayPal, varying by country.

Whop also operates an affiliate marketplace, where global affiliates promote listed products across the Whop Discover marketplace at a default 30% commission rate. For non-marketplace sales, Whop's base domestic card rate of 2.7% + $0.30 is lower than Gumroad's 10% + $0.50. Whop sellers who use managed tax pay an additional 2% per transaction, while Gumroad handles sales tax collection and remittance as Merchant of Record.

Gumroad explicitly prohibits physical goods sales, restricting catalogs entirely to digital items. On a $5.00 file, Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 takes $1.00, or 20% of the sale.

Payhip for Low-Overhead Digital Downloads

Payhip is an alternative for distributing digital downloads, courses, coaching packages, memberships, and physical products. Payhip structures its software into three tiers: Free Forever at $0 per month, Plus at $29 per month, and Pro at $99 per month. All features are included equally across every plan tier.

Transaction fees decrease as plan subscriptions rise: Free Forever takes a 5% fee, Plus takes a 2% fee, and Pro charges a 0% platform transaction fee. On all tiers, third-party payment gateways like Stripe charge their standard payment processing rates directly to the seller account.

On a digital download priced at $20, the Payhip Free plan takes $1.00 (5%), while Stripe takes 2.9% + $0.30 ($0.88), leaving $18.12. On Payhip Pro ($99 per month), Payhip takes $0, leaving only the gateway fee. If an operator generates $5,000 monthly, the 5% fee on Free equals $250. Pro costs less than Free above $1,980 a month. Plus ($29 plus 2%) is the cheapest of the three between about $967 and $3,500. Above $3,500, Pro is cheapest, because 2% of $3,500 is $70, the gap between $99 and $29.

Whop's Files app lets sellers share templates, e-books, and digital assets. However, Whop applies payout fees to withdraw earnings, including $2.50 for next-day ACH, 4% + $2.50 for Instant Bank Deposit, or $23.00 for bank wires.

  • Payhip Free Forever costs $0 a month plus a 5% fee.
  • Payhip Pro eliminates platform transaction fees entirely for $99 per month, passing only standard gateway costs.
  • Payhip sells digital downloads, online courses, coaching, memberships and physical products, with the same features on every plan.
  • PayPal and Stripe still charge their standard rates on Payhip sales, on all plans.

Stan Store for Social-First Selling

Stan Store describes itself as an all-in-one creator store built to sell from your social profile. Stan Store operates on two subscription tiers: Creator at $29 per month ($300 per year) and Creator Pro at $99 per month ($948 per year). Stan offers a 14-day free trial and does not provide a permanent free plan.

Stan Store takes a 0% platform transaction fee on all sales. Sellers connect payment processors directly, paying standard gateway rates documented on the Stan transaction fee guide. In the United States, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

Creator Pro adds discount codes, upsells and order bumps, payment plans, affiliate management, email broadcasts, email flows and pixel tracking over Creator.

  • Stan Creator costs $29 per month, and Stan earns 0% from transactions made on the platform.
  • Stan Creator Pro costs $99 per month, adding upsells, order bumps, payment plans, and automated email broadcast flows.
  • Payment processing passes directly through connected Stripe (2.9% + $0.30) accounts.

Kajabi for All-in-One Course Operations

Kajabi is a platform for educational organizations and creators managing structured courses, video content, and marketing funnels. Kajabi offers three core plans: Basic at $179 per month ($143 per month billed annually), Growth at $249 per month ($199 annual), and Pro at $499 per month ($399 annual). Every plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Kajabi says it takes no revenue share. When using Kajabi Payments, domestic card processing rates for United States entities are 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.8% + $0.30 on Growth, and 2.7% + $0.30 on Pro. If sellers connect a third-party gateway instead of Kajabi Payments, Kajabi adds an extra transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Growth, or 0.5% on Pro, excluding PayPal.

Product limits scale across subscription tiers: Basic includes 5 products, 2,500 contacts, 1 website, 1 community, and 2 admin users. Growth expands access to 50 products, 25,000 contacts, 1 website, 1 community, and 11 admin users. Pro provides unlimited products, 100,000 contacts, 3 websites, 3 communities, and 26 admin users. Additional contacts cost $125 per month per 25,000 block.

Whop's Courses app offers multi-lesson learning with videos, quizzes, and progress tracking. Kajabi covers courses, communities, newsletters, coaching, digital downloads, memberships and podcasts, plus email marketing, website builder and funnels.

Patreon for Audience Memberships

Patreon is a platform for creators who fund work through subscription tiers. Patreon requires no upfront software fees and is free to start. It takes a flat 10% platform share of creator earnings, plus payment processing fees, currency conversion charges, payout costs, and applicable taxes.

Patreon supports monthly and annual subscriptions, recurring membership tiers, and one-time purchases across 16+ currencies for pay-ins and payouts. Creators gain native video hosting, livestreaming capabilities, email newsletters, and direct messaging chats to communicate with patrons. Patreon manages chargebacks, billing disputes, and fraud monitoring on behalf of its creators.

Whop also provides recurring subscription billing alongside Chat and Events apps, but its base processing fee is 2.7% + $0.30 for domestic cards. Whop charges $15.00 per dispute and $29.00 for early dispute alerts (RDR). Whop lists a $0.07 per-transaction fee for Whop Radar (ML fraud detection) and $0.03 for 3DS authentication.

For a creator earning $5,000 monthly from subscriptions, Patreon's 10% platform take removes $500 before card processing fees are applied. At the same $5,000, Skool Pro costs $244 ($99 plus 2.9%) and Circle Professional costs $189 ($89 plus 2%).

When Whop Is the Better Fit

Whop fits sellers who want per-transaction pricing, developer tools, and community apps in one account. Whop's fees documentation states that base domestic card processing costs 2.7% + $0.30, and Whop's fees page does not publish a monthly platform fee.

Whop describes itself on its documentation portal as an infrastructure layer to accept payments, pay out users, build apps, and embed chat, offering SDKs in TypeScript, Python, and Ruby. Developers can also use the Whop CLI listed on the Whop homepage to automate dashboard actions programmatically, which is detailed in the Whop API guide.

Whop supports diverse business models outlined in its getting started documentation, including educational programs, agency services, coaching, newsletters, paid groups, SaaS, events, DTC ecommerce, and brick-and-mortar operations. Its foundational community apps include Chat, Courses, Forums, Events, Content, Files, and Calendar Bookings.

International selling is another strength. Whop says it supports 195 countries, 135+ currencies, and 100+ payment methods, and says it pays out to 200+ countries. More detail is in the Whop review.

  • Whop says it supports 195 countries, 135+ currencies and 100+ payment methods; financing (buy now, pay later) costs 15% per successful transaction through a financing partner.
  • Modular application architecture lets merchants combine courses, digital files, forums, and calendar bookings in one hub.

Selection Framework for Creator and Platform Operators

Work out the monthly sales level where a percentage fee costs more than a fixed monthly plan. To compare the total cost, add gateway processing, platform takes, payout fees and add-on costs at your expected monthly sales.

If your revenue is low or unpredictable, plans with no monthly fee such as Gumroad (10% + $0.50) or Payhip Free Forever (5% fee) charge only when you sell. Whop's fees page does not publish a monthly platform fee. Payhip Pro ($99 per month) costs less than Payhip Free above $1,980 a month, and Skool Pro ($99 plus 2.9%) costs less than Skool Hobby ($9 plus 10%) above about $1,268.

Delivery format dictates the platform choice. For standalone digital products and templates, Payhip sells digital downloads and Stan Store sells from your social profile. For communities with courses and live calls, Skool and Circle both include unlimited members. For high-ticket video courses supported by complex marketing automation, Kajabi provides dedicated funnels despite its contact caps.

For customized billing models, Stripe gives developers direct control: Standard is 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card, and Stripe Billing adds 0.7% on pay-as-you-go.

  • Choose Payhip or Stan Store if your product line consists primarily of downloadable files and e-books.
  • Choose Skool or Circle if member retention depends on interactive discussion forums, live events, and group calls.
  • Choose Stripe if your team possesses developer resources and requires custom billing logic without creator marketplace constraints.

The Verdict

No single platform replaces Whop across all its use cases. Choose Stripe if you want direct control over payment processing and have developers to build on it; Stripe Standard is 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card with no setup or monthly fees. Choose Skool or Circle if your business centers on community discussions, member engagement, and group calls.

Choose Payhip, Gumroad, or Stan Store if you sell standalone digital files or templates without a community attached. Choose Kajabi if you sell multi-tier educational programs that require built-in email marketing and structured funnels. Whop fits if you want per-transaction pricing starting at 2.7% + $0.30, SDKs in TypeScript, Python and Ruby, community apps, and access to the Whop Discover marketplace.

This pick would change if Skool or Circle dropped their percentage transaction fees on entry-level plans, or if Whop's fees page changed its 2.7% + $0.30 base rate.
