Claude Duet Explained
How Claude Duet works day to day and how to get off the waitlist.
Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive agent application that runs Claude Opus 5.5 on a dedicated cloud computer to manage routine business tasks. Anthropic opened a research preview on October 21, 2026, for US subscribers on Claude Pro and Max plans. Instead of waiting for prompts, Claude Duet watches connected business accounts, delivers a morning briefing, follows up on quiet threads, and asks for confirmation before executing consequential actions.
Claude Duet runs on its own cloud computer and browser, so your laptop or phone does not need to stay on. It carries forward existing skills, memory, and connectors from an active Claude account, interfacing with tools like Gmail, Slack, Stripe, and QuickBooks.
Access remains restricted during the preview period through an invite-only waitlist. Workspace users on Claude Team or Enterprise plans cannot turn on Claude Duet today, and the Free plan is not included. While the preview adds no direct subscription surcharge, background work consumes standard plan session and weekly usage limits.
What Claude Duet Is and Who Can Get Access
Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive agent app, running Opus 5.5 on its own cloud computer. It watches your connected apps, sends a morning brief and alerts, does tasks you assign, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes.
Anthropic announced Claude Duet on October 21, 2026, as detailed in its Introducing Claude Duet announcement. According to Anthropic, Claude Duet is built for professionals and small business owners who manage more operational tasks than they can manually track.
Access is currently limited to an invite-only research preview in the United States. To be eligible, users must maintain a Claude Pro or Claude Max subscription and receive an invitation through the Claude Duet waitlist. Free accounts are excluded. The Get started with Claude Duet support article says Claude Duet is not on Team or Enterprise plans yet, and Anthropic plans to add them later.
Claude Duet runs only on Claude Opus 5.5. Users cannot switch models manually because Claude Duet automatically decides how much effort a specific job needs. For a wider look at agents that work in the background, see autonomous AI agents for business.
Claude Duet has no published audit logs or shared team workspaces, and Team and Enterprise plans are not supported yet. Teams on Claude Team or Enterprise can use Claude with Cowork merged in, which is available on plans including Team. Setup is covered in how to set up Claude Cowork.
Anthropic has not published data retention terms, model training terms or admin controls for Claude Duet. The guide to Claude Duet for business covers what those gaps mean for a company handling client data.
- Availability: United States only, accessible via waitlist invitations during the research preview
- Eligible tiers: Claude Pro ($20 monthly, or $17 billed annually) and Claude Max (starting from $100 monthly)
- Excluded tiers: Claude Free, Claude Team ($25 Standard or $125 Premium), and Claude Enterprise
- Underlying model: Claude Opus 5.5, which decides how much effort a job needs
Daily Interactions and Workspace Interface
Daily interaction with Claude Duet centers around an automated morning briefing, periodic background check-ins, and a persistent single-thread workspace.
Each morning, Claude Duet scans connected email inboxes, calendars, and integrated business applications to compile an operational briefing. Claude Duet highlights items requiring immediate attention and can prepare preliminary work, such as drafting responses to urgent inquiries. Throughout the workday, Claude Duet checks connected accounts at regular intervals, which Anthropic describes as every few hours, rather than polling continuously. Anthropic explains that checking accounts nonstop would consume plan session limits much faster.
Claude Duet also follows up on threads that have gone quiet. Users interact through a single continuous thread using text prompts or voice input. The Claude Duet app has three tabs: Chat, Tasks and Make.
The Tasks tab tracks background assignments in progress, and Anthropic notes that only the human user has permission to mark a task as completed. Once an assignment finishes, completed work comes back as files in the Make tab, such as a research brief, financial model, slide deck or dashboard. When presenting numbers or summaries, Claude Duet explicitly cites the source email, file, or spreadsheet.
- Morning briefing: summarizes incoming priorities across email, calendars, and apps, drafting preliminary next steps
- Periodic check-ins: checks connected tools at set intervals (every few hours, per Anthropic's announcement) and messages you only when something needs attention
- Tasks view: monitors active background processes, reserving completion status changes exclusively for users
- Make view: delivers finalized work products such as financial models, slide decks, and operational briefs
- Source citations: references the exact integrated document or email where extracted facts originate
Cloud Execution Environment and Connectors
Claude Duet executes tasks within an independent cloud computer equipped with a dedicated cloud browser, separating background operations from local device hardware.
Because execution happens on Anthropic's cloud infrastructure, Claude Duet keeps working after you close the app or turn off your computer. When accessing websites or web platforms lacking native API integrations, Claude Duet navigates the web using its built-in cloud browser. You cannot watch or take over that browser yet.
Setup is minimal because Claude Duet uses the memory, skills and connectors already in your Claude account from the first message. Claude Duet respects the Search and reference chats control located under Settings > Memory, allowing it to search past conversations in Duet and standard Claude chats outside projects. Claude Duet can read your work in Claude but cannot modify it, and it cannot see all of your projects or your local files.
Anthropic's Claude Duet product page highlights compatibility with over 6,000 plugins and connectors available through the Claude Marketplace. Logos on that page include Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Stripe, HubSpot, QuickBooks, Docusign, Gusto, Notion, Canva, 1Password, and Ramp. Signing in with logins saved in 1Password is listed as coming soon. Users initiate every connector manually and can revoke access at any time in Claude account settings. However, the Get started with Claude Duet article says Slack and some other connectors work with limits, and Microsoft 365 isn't available yet. If your business runs on Microsoft 365, Claude Duet alternatives compares other agents.
- Independent cloud computer: maintains background execution without local device dependencies
- Cloud browser: accesses external web services autonomously, though visual screen-sharing is unsupported
- Inherited settings: applies existing Claude account connectors, skills, and configured memory preferences
- Marketplace connectors: links to platforms including QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, HubSpot, and Docusign
- Connector limits: Microsoft 365 is not yet available, and Slack connections function with restrictions
Approval Checkpoints and Action Restrictions
Anthropic enforces mandatory human approval checkpoints before Claude Duet can execute irreversible, financial, or legally binding actions.
Before sending an email, submitting a payment, signing an agreement, or deleting any record, Claude Duet displays the proposed action and pauses for confirmation. If a user cannot review the prompt immediately, Claude Duet finishes the rest of the task and resurfaces the approval request later. Some actions are blocked even with your approval: trading securities, moving money between accounts, or accessing someone else's account. Additionally, Claude Duet cannot make outbound phone calls or send text messages.
Actions are checked by Anthropic's auto mode classifier, the same safeguard used in Claude and Claude Code. Credentials follow the Claude Managed Agents design, so Claude Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens. For a site that asks for a password, you type it into a separate form on your device that sends it straight to Claude Duet's browser.
Purchases occur through Stripe Link or Shopify Shop Pay wallets connected within the app. Claude Duet confirms the item, and Link asks you to approve the spend. Each purchase uses a one-time virtual card, so your real card number is not shared. A safety classifier checks every outbound message. It is meant to refuse sharing credit card numbers or government identification, and it sends health or personal finance information only when you explicitly told it to. Anthropic says no prompt-injection defense is perfect, which is one reason Claude Duet asks before consequential actions.
- Mandatory approval gates: required before sending emails, processing payments, executing signatures, or deleting files
- Absolute restrictions: barred from securities trading, inter-account bank transfers, third-party account access, calls, and texts
- Credential protection: follows the Claude Managed Agents design, so Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens
- Wallet payments: uses Stripe Link or Shop Pay with one-time virtual cards upon user authorization
- Sensitive data guards: meant to refuse sharing government identification and credit card numbers
Waitlist Registration and Platform Setup
To get Claude Duet, you join the waitlist and, once invited, sign in to the mobile app or the web version at claude.ai.
Anthropic is issuing invitations in sequential waves, with no set public schedule for individual admissions. Because invitations link directly to account identities, the submitted registration email must match an active paid Claude subscription.
Follow these steps to submit a waitlist entry and configure access upon invitation:
- 1. Visit the official Claude Duet product page and select the option to join the waitlist.
- 2. Enter your full name and the specific email address associated with your active Claude Pro or Claude Max subscription.
- 3. Select your current subscription tier and your mobile device operating system, choosing between iOS and Android.
- 4. Optional: describe the primary workflows or administrative tasks you intend to assign to Claude Duet first.
- 5. Upon receiving an invitation notification, open the link on your mobile phone using the Apple or Google account linked to that email.
- 6. Sign in using your existing Claude credentials to access the standalone iOS or Android mobile application, or visit claude.ai on a desktop web browser.
Initial Workflow Implementation and Stated Limits
New users should begin by connecting existing productivity tools and starting with a workflow Anthropic names.
Connectors already in your Claude account, such as Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, HubSpot, QuickBooks or Gusto, carry over from the first message. Anthropic names workflows such as drafting reminders for unpaid invoices in Stripe or QuickBooks and drafting follow-ups from HubSpot deal history. Others include posting an approved job listing to LinkedIn, sending agreements through Docusign, running payroll in Gusto and managing a Shopify store. Plugins also work, for example the small business plugin.
Anthropic cautions that Claude Duet might misread conversational threads, misjudge the urgency of inbound messages, or miss communications that arrive between scheduled check-in intervals. Because Claude Duet asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, a misread thread reaches you as a draft you can reject. Claude Duet is weaker at personal errands such as booking tickets.
The morning briefing and recurring check-ins draw against 5-hour session allowances and weekly limits at standard chat consumption rates. When admitted, users receive a single full limit reset valid through November 30, 2026. Current subscription terms can be reviewed on the official Claude pricing page, or compared in the Claude pricing guide.
- Receivables tracking: identifying unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe to draft collection reminders
- Recruitment publishing: preparing candidate job descriptions and holding them for review prior to LinkedIn distribution
- Payroll operations: setting up and verifying compensation runs inside Gusto
- Sales coordination: drafting contextual correspondence based on historical customer records in HubSpot
- Usage monitoring: background check-ins and complex deliverables count against shared account session caps
Claude Duet Compared with ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse
Technology publications like MacRumors and 9to5Mac frame Claude Duet as Anthropic's response to rival agent offerings like ChatGPT dots and Meta Muse.
OpenAI introduced persistent agents on September 29, 2026, known as dots, which are detailed in the guide to ChatGPT dots explained. While Claude Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, ChatGPT dots run on GPT-6 Astra within dedicated cloud environments. OpenAI includes dots in ChatGPT Pro ($100 to $500 a month) and ChatGPT Business Premium seats ($125 a month, or $100 billed annually). Pro dots are not offered in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK. A full breakdown of operational differences is available in the comparison of Claude Duet vs ChatGPT dots.
Meta announced Meta Muse on September 8, 2026. It runs on Muse Spark across iOS, Android, the web and WhatsApp. Meta Muse provides consumer-oriented assistance across Free, Power ($20 monthly), and Maximum ($100 monthly) tiers.
