Claude for Startups: Application Status and Partner VC Credits
Where Anthropic's startup program stands and how partner VCs claim credits while public cohorts are closed.
You cannot apply directly to Claude for Startups right now because Anthropic says the cohort is full. At Layer3Labs, we build custom agents and enterprise integrations for clients, so model credit terms change what those builds cost to run. If a venture firm in Anthropic's partner network backs you, Anthropic's page says you may claim up to $100,000 in API credits through that firm.
If your investors do not hold a spot in the Anthropic partner network, your direct path to the official program pauses until the next public cohort opens. In the meantime, you can join the official program newsletter, evaluate alternative foundation model grants, or review baseline token costs on our Claude pricing guide.
Can You Apply to Claude for Startups Right Now
Public applications for Claude for Startups are closed because the current cohort is full, according to Anthropic's Claude Startups program page.
Applications still in review when the cohort filled were not moved forward. Anthropic emailed everyone affected and encourages them to apply for the next cohort.
The only direct action available on the public site today is subscribing to the Claude Startup newsletter. Subscribing provides an alert when Anthropic reopens registration for future groups of early-stage builders.
- Direct public applications through the web portal are completely closed
- Pending applications were not approved and were closed out by email
- Anthropic invites pending applicants whose reviews were not moved forward to apply for the next cohort
- Founders without partner VC backing must use the email newsletter to monitor reopening announcements
The $100K API Credit Route Through Partner VCs
Venture-backed startups can bypass the closed public form if their lead investor belongs to Anthropic's partner network. The official Claude Startups page confirms that startups backed by an approved venture capital firm may qualify for up to $100,000 in additional Application Programming Interface (API) credits.
You cannot apply for this allocation on the Anthropic website because the grant is distributed exclusively through participating venture firms. Anthropic's program page lists no partner firms, so ask your lead investor whether their firm is in Anthropic's partner network.
OpenAI for Startups uses the same investor route and provides API credits and rate-limit upgrades exclusively through eligible venture capital partners rather than an open public application. If your cap table includes institutional investors, your primary funding partner is a direct route to model credits.
- Qualified startups may receive up to $100,000 in API credits
- Credits must be requested and claimed through an eligible venture capital firm
- Anthropic publishes no public directory of its venture partner network
- Self-funded, bootstrapped, or angel-backed teams without an institutional partner cannot use this route
What Claude Startups Members Get
Startups accepted into Claude Startups get partner discounts, live Applied AI group sessions and event invitations.
The Claude Startup Stack gives members discounts and credits worth up to $45,000 from AI companies building on Claude, which cuts what you pay for their tools. Founders redeem these partner offers using specific promotional codes inside the Claude Console.
Members also join live Applied AI group sessions every other week, each with an AMA (ask me anything) where you can bring questions about your build. Anthropic also invites members to Claude Startup events, hackathons and meetups.
- Claude Startup Stack offering up to $45,000 in third-party software discounts and credits
- Promotion codes redeemed directly inside the first-party Claude Console
- Live Applied AI sessions scheduled every other week with interactive AMA access
- Invitations to Claude Startup events, hackathons and meetups
Where Claude Startup Credits Work
Startup credits issued through Anthropic apply exclusively to the first-party Claude API managed inside the Claude Console. According to the published rules on Claude Startups, promotional credits cannot be used on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, or other third-party cloud marketplaces.
If your application architecture routes model requests through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, or Azure, you cannot spend your Anthropic credit balance against those provider bills.
Teams with existing cloud marketplace commitments must maintain direct billing arrangements with those hyperscalers. To understand base inference expenses when running outside of promotional allocations, consult our detailed Claude pricing guide or our broad AI model pricing directory.
- Credits function only on the direct Claude API through the Claude Console
- Usage on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Azure is completely excluded
- Marketplace deployments require separate billing or third-party cloud platform credits
- If you call Claude through AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, budget those bills separately from your credits
What to Do While Applications Are Closed
In our internal analysis of the published program rules, we found that waiting for Anthropic to reopen applications leaves you without startup credits while you build. The right next step depends on who backs you.
If your startup has closed an institutional funding round and launched a live product, consider programs with open application pipelines. xAI runs Grok for Startups through an open application form for venture-backed startups with a live product. Its page aims for six to twelve months of usage across Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot and the Grok API from one balance. For a full breakdown of requirements, read our Grok for Startups overview. Similarly, the Google for Startups Cloud Program provides up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits over two years for artificial intelligence startups spanning Pre-Seed to Series A stages.
Self-funded and bootstrapped founders who lack institutional backing should target programs that do not mandate venture capital validation. AWS Activate offers its Activate Founders tier with $1,000 in credits (AWS lists up to $5,000) for self-funded companies. In addition, NVIDIA Inception is free to join and grants cloud credits alongside preferred hardware pricing to incorporated startups under ten years old without requiring institutional funding. You can compare every current option in our AI startup credit programs directory.
Moving to Grok, Google Cloud or AWS credits does not suit a product that depends on Claude models. If your engineering requirements mandate Anthropic models, verify whether your investors have partner network access and join the official newsletter. Our recommendation would change if Anthropic reopened public applications or let startup credits work on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure. For now, contact your lead investor regarding Anthropic's partner network, then subscribe to the newsletter on the Claude Startups portal.
- Institutional startups with a product: evaluate Grok for Startups or Google for Startups Cloud
- Bootstrapped or self-funded teams: apply to AWS Activate Founders or NVIDIA Inception
- Teams needing Anthropic models immediately: verify partner VC allocations or self-fund API usage
- Action step: confirm partner status with your investors and subscribe to cohort reopening alerts
