OpenAI for Startups: How to Get API Credits

How founders reach OpenAI startup credits through partner VCs, plus the open programs to use when no partner VC backs you.

OpenAI for Startups provides application programming interface (API) credits and rate-limit increases exclusively through partner venture capital (VC) firms rather than an open web application form. At Layer3Labs, we build and run AI systems inside other people's businesses, and model credits often shape a client's early infrastructure choices.

Ask your lead investor first. If that firm is not an OpenAI partner, Grok for Startups, Google for Startups Cloud and AWS Activate take direct applications.

How to Get OpenAI Startup Credits

You get OpenAI startup credits through your venture capital firm. OpenAI's startup page tells founders to reach out to their VC, and access runs only through OpenAI's eligible VC partners.

  • Ask your lead investor whether their firm is an OpenAI startup partner.
  • Prepare a short summary of your product and funding. OpenAI lists no required materials.
  • Have your investor reach out to OpenAI for you.

Benefits and Allocations in OpenAI for Startups

OpenAI for Startups gives free API credits, which cover early usage, and rate-limit upgrades, which let your app send more requests.

OpenAI publishes no credit amount or tier on its startup page.

Until your investor confirms an amount, budget your API usage as if the credits are small.

Our guide to how AI credits work explains how providers meter usage and handle expired balances.

  • Free API credits for OpenAI API usage
  • Rate-limit upgrades alongside promotional API credits
  • No public dollar value or credit tiers published on the OpenAI portal
  • Financial projections should assume modest credit support until partner amounts are verified

Alternative Programs When Your Investor Lacks a Partnership

If your lead venture firm lacks an active OpenAI partnership, direct credit grants from OpenAI are unavailable. Several competing frontier labs and cloud providers maintain public application tracks that provide infrastructure grants to qualifying engineering teams.

Founders seeking immediate model credits should evaluate these verified alternative tracks:

Grok for Startups: Run by xAI (its legal terms say SpaceXSI), the Grok for Startups program provides unified credits across Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot, and the Grok API from a single balance. The program targets venture-backed startups with a live product and an official company email matching their website domain. Founders apply directly through the public Grok for Startups application form, which requires details on funding, revenue, and current monthly AI spend. The form says it takes about five minutes. xAI's FAQ says it aims for about six months of usage, and teams that do not qualify yet can reapply once they have raised. Its Program Terms call any target amount informational, and the approval email sets the binding grant. Eligible teams receive 20% of their credits upon approval and the remaining 80% automatically after completing onboarding steps. Under the published Grok for Startups Program Terms, credits expire six months after they are applied to your account. For eligibility and credit math, see our dedicated guide to Grok for Startups.

Microsoft for Startups: The Microsoft for Startups program publishes credit packages offering up to $150,000 in promotional support. The page does not state eligibility rules, so confirm on Microsoft's page who qualifies and which services the credits cover.

Google for Startups Cloud Program: The Google for Startups Cloud Program provides up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits over two years for artificial intelligence startups. The package awards up to $250,000 in the first year, with the second year covering 20% of usage up to an extra $100,000. Startups not focused on artificial intelligence can qualify for up to $200,000 total ($100,000 in year one and up to $100,000 in year two). Eligibility covers companies from Pre-Seed to Series A founded within the past three to five years depending on the tier.

Self-funded startups can apply to the AWS Activate Founders tier for $1,000 in credits (AWS lists up to $5,000). Startups with an Activate Provider organization ID, for example from an investor or accelerator, can get Activate Portfolio packages of up to $200,000. AWS limits both to startups before Series B, founded within the last 10 years, on a paid-tier AWS account.

Claude Startups: Anthropic operates Claude Startups for early-stage companies building on Claude. Anthropic says its current cohort is full and it is not accepting new applications. Startups backed by a VC in Anthropic's partner network may still claim up to $100,000 in API credits through that VC. Members get the Claude Startup Stack, with discounts and credits worth up to $45,000 from AI companies building on Claude.

NVIDIA Inception: The NVIDIA Inception program offers free membership, hardware discounts, and partner cloud credits to incorporated technology companies under 10 years old at any funding stage. Inception excludes consultancies, crypto companies, cloud service providers, resellers and public companies.

  • Grok for Startups takes direct applications from venture-backed teams with a live product, and credits expire six months after they are applied
  • Google Cloud offers up to $350,000 over two years specifically for artificial intelligence companies
  • Microsoft for Startups advertises up to $150,000 in promotional credits across its ecosystem
  • AWS Activate delivers up to $5,000 for self-funded teams and up to $200,000 for portfolio companies
  • Claude Startups cohort intake is currently paused, but venture network partner credits reach up to $100,000

OpenAI API Expenses Once Promotional Credits Expire

Price your product on OpenAI's standard API rates from the start, since OpenAI publishes no startup credit amount.

OpenAI rates are not published on the startup program page. To track current per-token expenses across major foundation models and benchmark potential monthly operating costs, see our AI model pricing index.

In our internal analysis of OpenAI's published program rules, we found that the only route to these credits is your lead investor, since OpenAI lists no public form and no amount. Budget as if the credits are small until your investor confirms the figure.

OpenAI for Startups does not suit bootstrapped teams, indie developers or companies without venture capital backing. Bootstrapped operators should pursue self-funded tracks such as AWS Activate Founders, or apply for open programs like Grok for Startups once funded.

Our assessment would change if OpenAI introduced an open, public application form that allows unbacked or self-funded startups to qualify directly.

To move forward today, email your lead investor and ask whether their fund participates in OpenAI's startup partner program.

  • Bootstrapped teams without venture capital backing cannot access OpenAI for Startups
  • A public self-serve portal from OpenAI would change our routing recommendation

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, OpenAI provides free API credits and rate-limit upgrades to eligible startups, but access is managed exclusively through partner venture capital firms rather than an open public application.
  • OpenAI publishes no public credit amount or tier structure on its startup portal. Founders must check directly with their lead investor to learn what credits are available.
  • No, there is no public web application form. The official portal instructs founders to contact their lead venture capital firm to request access through established partner networks.
  • Yes, venture capital backing from an affiliated partner firm is required. Because OpenAI routes allocations through institutional investor partners, bootstrapped and unbacked teams cannot qualify directly through OpenAI.
  • Venture-backed founders can apply directly to Grok for Startups, the Google for Startups Cloud Program (up to $350,000 for AI startups) or Microsoft for Startups (up to $150,000). Self-funded teams can apply to AWS Activate Founders for $1,000 in credits.
