Claude Pro vs Max vs Team: Which Plan Should Your Business Pay For?

A plan-by-plan buyer's guide for 2026: usage limits, seat costs, and data controls.

Choose Claude Pro for one light user, Max for one heavy user, and Team when several people need shared billing and admin controls. That single rule covers most business decisions. The rest of this guide shows the math behind it.

This page compares Claude subscription PLANS, not Claude models. Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise are what you pay for. Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus are the models you run inside any plan. If you want the model decision instead, see our guide on picking the best Claude model.

The Claude plan lineup at a glance

Claude sells five plan tiers in 2026, from a free account to custom Enterprise contracts. Each tier changes three things: how much you can use, how many people share it, and how your data is handled.

Prices change often. Treat the numbers below as of 2026 and confirm the current figures on anthropic.com/pricing before you buy.

  • Claude Free ($0, as of 2026): limited daily usage, single user, best for trying Claude before you commit.
  • Claude Pro ($20/mo, as of 2026): roughly 5x free usage, single user, best for one person using Claude a few times a day.
  • Claude Max 5x ($100/mo, as of 2026): about 5x Pro usage, single user, best for one power user who hits Pro limits daily.
  • Claude Max 20x ($200/mo, as of 2026): about 20x Pro usage, single user, best for all-day heavy use like Claude Code sessions.
  • Claude Team ($25/seat/mo, or ~$20/seat billed annually, as of 2026): 5-seat minimum, shared workspace, central billing, best for a department that needs admin controls.
  • Claude Team Premium (~$125/seat/mo, or ~$100 annually, as of 2026): higher per-seat usage plus Team admin features, for teams of heavy users.
  • Claude Enterprise (custom pricing, as of 2026): SSO, audit logs, and configurable data retention, for larger orgs with security requirements.
Plan is separate from model. Every paid plan can run Haiku, Sonnet, or Opus. See /guides/best-claude-model to choose the model.

Choosing and rolling out the right Claude plan for a team is easy to get wrong. Let's map the plan mix, seats, and usage limits to how your team actually works.

What Claude usage limits actually mean

Claude usage limits reset on a rolling window, not a fixed monthly quota. Most limits run on a 5-hour cycle, with weekly caps layered on top for heavy tools like Claude Code.

Anthropic does not publish exact message counts. Usage depends on how long your chats are, which model you run, and how much you attach.

So the "5x" and "20x" numbers are relative, not absolute. Max 5x gives you about five times the room Pro has before you hit a limit. Max 20x gives about twenty times.

  • Pro: fine for a handful of chats a day; you may hit limits during a long working session.
  • Max 5x: built for someone who works with Claude most of the day.
  • Max 20x: built for near-constant use, including long coding runs.
  • In May 2026, Anthropic doubled the 5-hour limit for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise seats.
If your one power user keeps hitting Pro limits by lunch, Max 5x is usually the fix, not a second Pro seat.

Claude Pro vs Max: when the upgrade pays off

Upgrade from Pro to Max when one person keeps running out of usage, not when you simply want it to feel faster. Max buys headroom, not a different Claude.

The price jump is steep. Max 5x costs five times Pro for about five times the usage. Max 20x costs ten times Pro for about twenty times the usage.

That makes Max 20x the better value per unit of usage, but only if you actually use it. Most people never reach Pro limits, so Max sits idle.

  • Stay on Pro if you rarely see a limit warning.
  • Move to Max 5x if you hit limits a few times a week.
  • Move to Max 20x if you hit limits daily or run long Claude Code sessions.
Is Claude Max worth it? Only for a genuine heavy user. For light use, Max wastes money.

Max and Team solve different problems

Max and Team are bought by different people for different reasons, which is the point most buyers miss. Max is about usage headroom for one person. Team is about control across many people.

You buy Max because a single power user needs more room. It adds no admin panel, no shared billing, and no central data controls.

You buy Team because you need one invoice, one place to manage users, and a written promise about data handling. A Team Standard seat gives only a little more usage than Pro; you are paying for the controls, not the headroom.

This is why a five-person startup with one heavy Claude user often buys one Max seat plus a few Pro seats, instead of putting everyone on Team.

Buy Max for headroom on one user. Buy Team for admin, billing, and data controls across many.

Claude Team pricing and seat economics

Claude Team costs about $25 per seat monthly, dropping to roughly $20 per seat when billed annually, with a five-seat minimum. That sets a floor of five paid seats even if only four people need access.

Team Standard seats give only slightly more usage than Pro. Team Premium seats give much more, at around $125 per seat monthly, but cost more than a single Max 5x seat.

So the seat math rewards buying Team for coordination, then adding a Max seat for your one heaviest user if needed. Do not buy Team Premium for everyone when only one person is the bottleneck.

  • 5-seat minimum: budget for at least five seats from day one.
  • Team Standard: pay mainly for shared workspace and admin, not extra usage.
  • Team Premium: pay for both, best when several users are heavy.
  • Mixed setup: Team for the group, one Max seat for the outlier heavy user.

Data handling and retention by plan

Anthropic does not train its models on your data in any paid plan, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Training use is off by default for business tiers.

Retention is where the plans split. Team keeps data for about 30 days by default, then purges it. Enterprise lets you configure retention, including zero retention beyond the request.

Team does not include SSO, audit logs, or zero-data-retention. Those are Enterprise features. If your security team requires them, budget for Enterprise, not Team.

  • Pro and Max: personal accounts, no central admin visibility, no shared controls.
  • Team: no training on your data, ~30-day retention, basic admin, Google or Microsoft SSO only.
  • Enterprise: SSO, SCIM, audit logs, role-based access, and custom retention including zero retention.
The Team-to-Enterprise line is a compliance line, not a usage line. Cross it when audit logs and retention controls are required.

Which plan for a team of N

Match the plan to your team size and how heavily people use Claude. The right answer changes as headcount and usage grow.

Use the guide below as a starting point, then confirm current prices and limits on anthropic.com before you commit budget.

  • 1 light user: Claude Pro.
  • 1 heavy user: Claude Max 5x, or Max 20x for all-day and Claude Code use.
  • 2 to 4 users, no admin needs: individual Pro seats, plus one Max seat for the heavy user.
  • 5 or more users needing shared billing and admin: Claude Team, from five seats up.
  • A team of heavy users: Claude Team Premium, or Team plus a Max seat for the outlier.
  • Any size needing SSO, audit logs, or custom retention: Claude Enterprise.
Start smaller than you think. Upgrading a seat is fast; refunding an over-bought plan is not.

Rolling out Claude without wasting seats

Roll out Claude by starting people on Pro and watching who actually hits limits. Real usage data tells you who needs Max better than any guess.

Buy Team once you need central billing or shared projects, not before. Below five heavy users, a mix of Pro and one Max seat is often cheaper.

Review seats every quarter. Usage patterns shift, and paying for idle Max or Premium seats is the most common Claude overspend we see.

  • Pilot on Pro first to find your real heavy users.
  • Add one Max seat for the person who bottlenecks.
  • Move to Team only when admin, billing, or data controls justify it.
  • Right-size seats quarterly to stop paying for idle capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Claude Pro ($20/mo) and Max ($100 or $200/mo) are the same product with different usage limits. Max 5x gives about five times Pro's usage, and Max 20x about twenty times. Both are single-user plans. Upgrade to Max only when one person keeps hitting Pro limits.
  • Claude Max is worth it only for genuine heavy users. If you rarely see a usage warning on Pro, Max wastes money. It buys headroom, not a smarter Claude. All-day users and people running long Claude Code sessions get the most value from it.
  • Claude Team costs about $25 per seat monthly, or roughly $20 per seat billed annually, with a five-seat minimum, as of 2026. Team Premium runs around $125 per seat monthly for higher usage. Confirm current pricing on anthropic.com/pricing before you buy.
  • A small team with one heavy user often does best with individual Pro seats plus one Max seat. Buy Claude Team once you need shared billing, an admin panel, or central data controls. Team's Standard seats give only slightly more usage than Pro.
  • No. Anthropic does not train its models on your inputs or outputs in any paid plan, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Training use is off by default for business tiers. Retention still varies: Team purges data after about 30 days, while Enterprise allows custom retention.
  • Move to Claude Enterprise when you need SSO, audit logs, role-based access, or custom data retention. Team does not include those. Enterprise also fits organizations that outgrow Team's 150-seat cap. Pricing is custom and negotiated with Anthropic's sales team.
  • No. Your plan sets usage limits and controls, not which model you run. Every paid plan can use Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Higher plans may get earlier access to new models. To choose a model, see our best Claude model guide.
  • Claude Team requires a minimum of five seats and supports up to 150. If you need more than 150 seats, you move to Enterprise. Budget for at least five paid seats even if fewer people currently need access.
