Suno v5 and v5.5 Explained: What They Did and What Replaced Them

The features Suno v5 and v5.5 added, dated from Suno's own release notes.

Suno v5 and v5.5 were Suno's primary music generation models through mid-2026, but Suno launched v6 on September 9, 2026.

At Layer3 Labs, we build AI workflows for small and mid-sized businesses, and a model version matters to a team only when it changes which plan they pay for.

Suno says it will retire earlier models as v6 rolls out and has not published a retirement date, while the live pricing page lists only v6, v6-wild, and v6-mini for active plans.

Suno v5, v5.5, and v6: What Changed

Suno v6 replaced v5 and v5.5 as the models listed on Suno's pricing page.

The Suno v6 release shifted the catalog on September 9, 2026. Until Suno publishes a retirement date, treat v5 and v5.5 as models on their way out.

Suno assigns v6-mini to free accounts while reserving v6 and v6-wild for Pro and Premier tiers. Downloads also moved to paid plans only. v5 improved audio and vocals, v5.5 added personal voices and models, and v6 now decides what each plan includes.

Model access per plan changes over time, so verify current availability directly on the Suno pricing page.

Do not pick a Suno plan for v5 or v5.5, because no plan on Suno's pricing page lists either model.

Model Timeline from v5 to the v6 Generation

The transition from v5 to v6 unfolded across three major releases over twelve months.

Suno released v5 on September 23, 2025, describing it as the world's best music model in its release notes. Two days later, a press release introduced Suno Studio as a multitrack companion environment.

Suno announced v5.5 six months later. The v5.5 update debuted on March 26, 2026, delivering custom vocal capture and personalized models. Suno followed on September 9, 2026 with v6, naming Warner Music Group among its industry partners.

  • September 23, 2025: Suno launches v5 with clearer audio, more natural vocals, and a remaster feature
  • March 26, 2026: Suno releases v5.5, adding Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste
  • September 9, 2026: Suno releases v6, v6-wild, and v6-mini, and says it will retire earlier models as v6 rolls out

Core Capabilities of the v5 Generation

Suno v5 delivered clearer, more immersive audio, more natural vocals, better genre understanding, and more creative control, alongside a remaster feature for older tracks.

Every item on that list is Suno's own description. Two days after launch, Suno's Studio press release called v5 "the most powerful music model on the market today." Suno says v6, which replaced v5 on the pricing page, was "trained entirely from scratch" on data excluding Universal and Sony material.

The remaster feature let creators run tracks made on older Suno models through v5. v6 goes further on editing: you can change a song section with a text prompt or update a single lyric without rebuilding the song. v6 also accepts text, audio, image, and video inputs and adds mashups, sampling, and beat isolation.

v5.5 Personalization Features and Studio 2.0

The v5.5 release expanded Suno beyond generic audio prompts into user-specific identity controls.

Voices enabled creators on Pro and Premier to record their own singing voice for generated songs. A verification check matched the singer's vocal profile to a spoken phrase before activation. Each recorded voice was private by default.

Custom Models expanded catalog personalization. Pro and Premier subscribers could build up to three custom models by supplying six or more uploaded songs. Suno has not said how Custom Models built on v5.5 run under v6. All accounts, including Free, received My Taste, an account-level setting that adapted to preferred genres and moods.

Suno Studio updates shipped separately from the model releases. On August 13, 2026, Premier members got Studio 2.0, which added MIDI editing, effects, and automation.

Free Access Rules and Paid Upgrades

Free accounts on Suno do not include access to v6 or v6-wild, and they cannot download finished song files.

Free accounts get zero downloads. Suno allocates free accounts 50 credits per day on a shared queue, limited to four concurrent generations and the v6-mini model. Audio uploads are capped at 8 minutes, with no stem separation and no commercial rights.

Paid subscriptions unlock advanced models and export permissions. Pro costs $10 monthly. Paid annually, Pro costs $8 monthly, providing 2,500 credits and 20 song downloads each month. Premier runs $30 monthly, or $24 monthly billed annually, supplying 10,000 credits, 60 song downloads, and access to Suno Studio.

Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades apply at the end of the current billing cycle. Monthly plan credits do not roll over, but purchased top-up credits never expire while a subscription remains active.

Commercial Rights and Download Limits

Commercial use rights on Suno apply only to songs downloaded while an account maintains an active paid subscription.

Free songs cannot be monetized. According to Suno help documentation, free-tier creations are restricted to personal, non-commercial use and can only be shared via direct web link.

Subscribing to Pro or Premier does not give retroactive commercial use licensing for tracks created on a free plan by default. Downloading any song requires Pro or Premier. Pro accounts receive 20 downloads each month, while Premier accounts receive 60 downloads.

Copyright eligibility remains separate. Suno grants commercial use rights under its paid license, but whether a song qualifies for copyright depends on your country's copyright office, not on Suno.

Plan Selection and Decision Criteria

Subscription decisions on Suno should depend on download volume and editing requirements instead of v5 or v5.5, which Suno says it will retire.

Do not buy a plan for v5. If you need commercial rights and 20 monthly song downloads, Pro at $10 monthly provides solid value on the v6 engine. If your workflow requires multitrack editing, MIDI control, and 60 downloads, Premier at $30 monthly makes sense.

Suno is not for creators who need free song downloads, because Free includes none and Pro caps downloads at 20 a month. If you need free exports or direct audio file downloads without paying, look at our breakdown of Suno alternatives.

Our answer would change if Suno let paid users select v5 again, or raised download caps on Pro beyond 20 songs per month. Review our analysis in Suno explained, check the full cost structure in Suno pricing, or compare multitrack workflows in Suno Studio explained.

What v6 Changes for Suno Users

Suno v6 arrives with new upload safeguards and a new label lawsuit.

Suno says v6 adds safeguards that screen uploaded audio and lyrics for unauthorized use. Universal and Sony dispute Suno's training claim. On September 18, 2026, both labels sued Suno a second time in Boston federal court, calling v6 "fruit of the same poisoned tree."

The suit covers 60,202 recordings. When teams try to generate complete compositions with single prompts, revision times multiply whenever a client requests an exact tempo shift. If you plan to publish Suno songs commercially, read our Suno vs Udio comparison for where each label case stands.

Check your monthly song download needs first. Compare that number with the 20 downloads on Pro and 60 on Premier before you subscribe.
