Claude Dashboards cannot replace Microsoft Power BI for governed enterprise reporting. Use Claude Dashboards for a first look at a question. Use Microsoft Power BI, with Copilot, for the business intelligence (BI) reports other people rely on.

Anthropic announced Claude Dashboards in beta on October 8, 2026, and says Dashboards work alongside BI and analytics tools. Claude Dashboards cannot send a dashboard into Power BI. Microsoft's Power BI Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers let Claude edit semantic models and write Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), but not report pages.

As of October 2026, Claude Dashboards is available in beta on paid plans including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, where it counts toward plan usage limits. Power BI Pro lists at $14.00 per user monthly billed annually on the Power BI pricing page, while Power BI Desktop is a free download for report development. The deciding question in Claude Dashboards vs Power BI is whether a chart answers one question today or feeds a report people check every week.

Use Claude Dashboards for First Looks and Power BI for Governed Reports

Claude Dashboards fits rapid exploratory data analysis, whereas Power BI fits governed corporate reporting with strict access controls. Organizations choosing between these tools must evaluate who creates the reports, how often data must refresh, and whether the metrics require centralized semantic models.

Anthropic built Claude Dashboards to eliminate the friction of filing tickets or writing SQL queries for routine operational metrics. Users type plain-language questions into Claude, and Claude builds charts backed by SQL queries it runs against the connected data warehouse.

Power BI is a core component of Microsoft Fabric. It adds semantic models, scheduled refresh, and row-level security that limits each Viewer to the rows their role allows.

  • Use Claude Dashboards to explore preliminary hypotheses before building permanent reports in Power BI
  • Power BI enforces row-level security for viewers, whereas Claude Dashboards relies on inherited source credentials

How Claude Dashboards and Power BI Connect to Data

Claude Dashboards generates charts by executing SQL queries against connected external warehouses, whereas Power BI builds visual reports on top of structured semantic models.

In Claude Dashboards, a dashboard functions as an artifact created from the Dashboards template, as outlined in the Claude Dashboards help center. It connects to enterprise data platforms including Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, and Snowflake, as well as customer relationship management (CRM) applications like Salesforce. Each chart shows its SQL query and when its data was last refreshed. Anthropic publishes no refresh schedule.

Power BI operates across Power BI Desktop for local authoring and the cloud-based Power BI Service for publishing, as detailed in Microsoft's platform overview. Power BI connects to business services such as Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, and Google Analytics via the Power BI service connector library. Power BI processes data through three distinct semantic model modes: Import, DirectQuery, and Composite, per the Microsoft semantic datasets guide.

  • Claude builds a dashboard only after Cloud code execution and file creation are turned on in its Capabilities settings
  • Power BI imports data into semantic models or queries underlying tables directly through DirectQuery
  • Power BI Pro supports up to 8 scheduled refreshes daily, while Premium Per User supports up to 48 daily refreshes

What Copilot in Power BI Can Build

Copilot in Power BI can create report pages, write DAX queries, and build summary visuals from a chat pane.

Microsoft's Copilot documentation adds that the pane can edit existing report pages, summarize the underlying semantic model, and add measure descriptions. When existing visuals do not answer a user query, Copilot builds a new visual using the model, as described in the Copilot reports overview. However, Copilot does not support custom visuals, styling adjustments, or formatting modifications, per Microsoft report creation guidelines.

Copilot in Power BI needs paid capacity on top of per-user seats. As documented in Microsoft instructions to enable Copilot and the Fabric Copilot capacity guide, organizations must maintain paid Fabric capacity on an F2 or higher stock-keeping unit (SKU) or Power BI Premium capacity on a P1 or higher SKU. Free and trial capacities cannot run Copilot. See the Power BI Copilot guide.

  • Prompt length is capped at 10,000 characters across all Copilot surfaces in Power BI
  • The report agent Copilot pane is generally available, while the standalone Power BI agent is in preview

How Claude Works with Power BI Through Microsoft's MCP Servers

Claude can interact with Power BI semantic models through Microsoft's official MCP servers, but cannot edit report layouts directly.

Microsoft published documentation for hosted and local Power BI MCP servers, as outlined in the Power BI MCP servers overview. The hosted Power BI Authoring MCP server is in preview. Per Microsoft's external clients guide, you add it to Claude Desktop under Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, using a Microsoft Entra app's client ID. According to the Power BI Authoring MCP documentation, Claude can write and validate DAX, create tables, update measures, and define security roles, but cannot modify report pages or layout diagrams.

Claude Dashboards has no handoff to Power BI. Anthropic's announcement documents direct handoffs to Amplitude, Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, Omni, Perplexity, PostHog, and Sigma, with Looker, monday.com, and Tableau listed as coming soon. To build report pages, Microsoft points to its powerbi-authoring plugin skills, which edit reports in the PBIR format, per Microsoft's agentic overview. The skills are optimized for the GitHub Copilot command-line interface (CLI) and include a compatibility shim for Claude Code. For Claude Code's own dashboard features, see the Claude Code and Dashboards guide.

  • DAX query execution tools through the MCP server have a hard limit of 100,000 rows
  • Fabric IQ MCP provides a read-only endpoint that respects row-level security and returns up to 250 rows by default

Why Claude Dashboards Does Not Make Power BI Obsolete

Claude Dashboards does not make Power BI obsolete. Anthropic's help center says to send a dashboard to another tool when a question needs deeper analysis.

Anthropic does not position Claude Dashboards as a replacement for business intelligence tools, as reported by The New Stack. The New Stack also reports Anthropic says Claude Dashboards will support semantic models if a connector exposes them, and Anthropic publishes no refresh schedule. In contrast, Power BI enforces row-level security (RLS) within roles for users with Viewer permissions, per Microsoft's row-level security documentation.

Power BI distributes reports as apps and can embed them in any portal that accepts a URL or iFrame, though each viewer needs a Power BI license, per Microsoft's embedded analytics guide. Claude Dashboards shares by invitation, with up to 50 people from outside the organization per artifact, and each viewer needs a Claude account, as documented in Claude artifact sharing rules. Furthermore, Claude Dashboards is not covered under Business Associate Agreements (BAA) for Protected Health Information (PHI) in organizations set up for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), per the Claude admin guide. Compare other options in the Claude Dashboards alternatives guide.

Claude Dashboards and Excel Files

Anthropic's published documentation does not list native Excel dashboard authoring for Claude. For a dashboard built in Microsoft's own tools, Power BI Desktop is a free download.

Claude Dashboards generates SQL queries and interactive charts as artifacts rather than spreadsheets. Anthropic added Docs, Slides, and Design to every conversation on September 16, 2026, per its release notes, and lists PowerPoint and PDF downloads among their exports.

What Claude Dashboards and Power BI Cost

Claude Dashboards is bundled into paid Claude subscription tiers, while Power BI charges per user or through organizational capacity licenses.

Anthropic publishes no separate price for Claude Dashboards as of October 2026. Per the Claude Dashboards setup article, Claude Dashboards is available in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. It counts toward standard account usage limits. On Enterprise plans, it stays off until an owner turns it on in Organization settings > Artifacts. Plan prices are in the Claude pricing guide.

Power BI offers distinct per-user and capacity tiers on the Power BI pricing page. Power BI Pro costs $14.00 per user monthly billed annually and includes report publishing, sharing, and up to 8 scheduled refreshes daily. Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) costs $24.00 per user monthly billed annually, expanding model memory limits to 100 GB and allowing up to 48 daily refreshes. Organizational Fabric Capacity Reservation is listed with variable pricing, providing an annual saving of 40.5% over pay-as-you-go rates. Workspaces hosted on Fabric capacity of F64 or higher allow free users to view reports without individual paid licenses, per Microsoft implementation planning.

  • Power BI Desktop is available as a free download for local report authoring
  • Power BI Copilot features require paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher), adding variable infrastructure costs

The Verdict

Claude Dashboards is the right choice for users who need quick answers to exploratory operational questions from connected data warehouses. Claude writes the SQL and shows the query behind each number, so a quick question does not need a ticket to a data team.

Power BI remains the superior platform for organizations requiring governed enterprise reporting, semantic modeling, and scheduled distribution. Its built-in semantic layer, DAX formula engine, scheduled refresh automation, and row-level security cover organization-wide reporting requirements.

Organizations handling PHI should keep it out of Claude Dashboards, which Anthropic's admin guide says is not covered under its BAA. Tenants on Microsoft sovereign clouds cannot use Copilot in Power BI.

Two developments would change this verdict. If Anthropic introduces scheduled data ingestion, semantic metric governance, and row-level security, Claude Dashboards could take on formal corporate reporting workloads. Conversely, if Microsoft removes the requirement for paid Fabric capacity to run Copilot features, Power BI would lower the barrier for conversational exploratory queries. To test Claude Dashboards vs Power BI on your own data, connect one warehouse to Claude, ask a question you would otherwise answer with a Power BI report, and open each chart's query to compare the numbers.
