Claude Dashboards Show the SQL Query Behind Every Chart

Anthropic built Claude Dashboards for quick, exploratory questions and hands deeper analysis to business intelligence tools.

On October 8, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion in beta, with Claude Dashboards built to turn plain-language questions about company data into dashboards. Claude Dashboards connects to a data platform such as BigQuery, Databricks, or Snowflake, or to a customer relationship management (CRM) tool such as Salesforce. Claude writes the Structured Query Language (SQL) queries itself, and Anthropic says asking about company data otherwise "usually means filing a ticket or writing SQL."

Each chart displays the SQL query behind its calculations alongside a timestamp showing when the metric was last refreshed. Alongside Dashboards, Anthropic graduated Docs, Slides, and Design out of beta into general availability across every plan tier. Dashboards is currently available in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise accounts.

Coverage from The New Stack notes that Anthropic launched this capability one month after OpenAI introduced a data agent for ChatGPT Work.

How Claude Dashboards Work

Claude Dashboards operates by converting natural-language prompts into executed SQL queries across connected data stores. You can ask for a dashboard in any chat, or select "Output" in the message box and choose "Dashboards." Every artifact, including a dashboard, needs Cloud code execution and file creation turned on first, per Anthropic's Artifacts help page. Pro and Max users turn it on in Settings > Capabilities, and Team and Enterprise use Organization settings > Capabilities.

According to the Claude Dashboards setup documentation, Claude generates the visualization as an artifact, attaches the query behind each chart, and shows when that chart's data was last refreshed. Users can refine charts by requesting prompt adjustments, such as filtering by regional sales or grouping figures into weekly timeframes. Every generated dashboard is automatically saved in the Artifacts tab.

  • 1. Turn on Cloud code execution and file creation in Settings > Capabilities (Pro, Max) or Organization settings > Capabilities (Team, Enterprise).
  • 2. Connect an enterprise data warehouse or business application to Claude.
  • 3. Request a dashboard in any chat or choose Dashboards from the output menu.
  • 4. Claude writes a SQL query for each chart and runs it against the connected data source.
  • 5. Review each generated chart, its underlying query, and its refresh timestamp.
  • 6. Ask for changes in the chat, such as "Add a filter for region," or send the dashboard to an analytics tool for deeper analysis.

Claude Dashboard Examples and Prompts

A finished Claude dashboard is one artifact holding several charts. Clicking a number shows the query behind it, and Claude can explain any chart on request.

Three of the prompts below are Anthropic's own examples from its help center. At Layer3Labs, we suggest the other three, and each is labeled as our wording.

Per the Claude Dashboards help center article, say what you want to know rather than what to chart, and name the table or app that holds the data. If a chart counts the wrong thing, open its query and tell Claude what to change.

  • Finance (Anthropic prompt): "Build a dashboard of this quarter's revenue by region." Needs a connected warehouse like Snowflake or BigQuery; check whether the query filters by recognized revenue.
  • Finance (our suggested wording): "Show department expenses over the last two quarters." Needs a connected warehouse like Amazon Redshift; check how the query groups operating accounts.
  • Product and growth (Anthropic prompt): "Show weekly signups for the last six months, split by plan." Needs a connected warehouse like Snowflake; check how the query segments plan tiers.
  • Product and growth (our suggested wording): "Track monthly active users by signup cohort." Needs a connected warehouse like BigQuery. Check which event timestamp the query uses to define an active user.
  • Sales (Anthropic prompt): "Make a dashboard of my open Salesforce opportunities by stage and owner." Needs a connected app like Salesforce; check whether the query excludes closed records.
  • Operations (our suggested wording): "Show daily fulfilled orders by distribution center." Needs a connected warehouse like Databricks or ClickHouse; check whether the query isolates completed shipments.

Supported Data Warehouses and Business Application Connectors

Claude Dashboards connects directly to major enterprise data warehouses and customer record platforms. Supported data warehouses include Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, and Snowflake. Claude Dashboards also works with other apps connected to Claude, so a user can ask for a dashboard of Salesforce opportunities.

Anthropic's connectors guide says you can add services from the Connectors Directory, add custom connectors, or connect any service that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Anthropic told The New Stack that Claude Dashboards "will also support" semantic models if they are exposed through a connector. On September 15, 2026, Anthropic launched Salesforce in Claude (beta), a plugin with 37 pre-built sales skills that can create a pipeline dashboard, per the release notes.

Claude inherits permissions directly from the connected service, preventing users from viewing files or records restricted in the source platform. The exception is a custom connector that uses a shared credential, which reaches whatever that credential can access.

Plan Availability and Organization Administration Settings

Claude Dashboards is available in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise accounts. Anthropic has not stated whether Free tier accounts can create dashboards. On Enterprise plans, Dashboards is disabled by default until an organization owner enables the feature in organization settings under Artifacts, as documented in the Anthropic admin guide.

Enterprise administrators can restrict dashboard creation to specific user groups through custom role assignments. Workspace owners must turn on Cloud code execution and file creation before users can generate any dashboard artifact. Dashboards draws against regular account message quotas, with no separate subscription fee published as of October 2026.

Anthropic states that artifact features are not covered under an organization's Business Associate Agreement (BAA) in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) environments. Consequently, administrators must ensure that teams keep Protected Health Information (PHI) out of Claude Dashboards.

Sharing Permissions and Access Governance Rules

Dashboards remain private to the creator upon creation and require explicit sharing actions. On Team and Enterprise subscriptions, dashboards stay inside the organization by default unless an owner enables external sharing. Pro and Max plans offer "Only you" or "Anyone with the link," but the Share artifacts help page says artifacts that connect to your apps can't use "Anyone with the link."

Team and Enterprise plans can share with invited people, with everyone in the organization, or with anyone who has the link, and an owner decides whether users can share outside the organization. You can invite up to 50 people from outside the organization per artifact, counting pending and accepted invitations. All viewers must possess an active Claude account to open a shared dashboard file.

Viewer access relies on individual source permissions. When a dashboard is shared, each viewer runs queries using their personal credentials. If a viewer lacks access to an underlying data source, that chart displays an error message instead of company data.

Sources differ on public links. Anthropic's announcement says dashboards can be shared "with anyone who has the link, if your admin allows it," but the Share artifacts help page says artifacts that connect to your apps can't use "Anyone with the link."

Exploratory Querying and Business Intelligence Platform Handoff

Anthropic positions Claude Dashboards for exploratory analysis rather than as a replacement for enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) platforms. Anthropic's help center says Claude Dashboards are made for quick, exploratory questions, such as how this week's signups compare with last month's. When a question needs deeper analysis, you can send the dashboard to another tool and continue there.

Claude Dashboards supports direct handoffs to Amplitude, Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, Omni, Perplexity, PostHog, and Sigma. Anthropic confirmed that handoffs to Looker, monday.com, and Tableau are planned for future updates. While The New Stack reported monday.com as available at launch, official Anthropic documentation lists monday.com as coming soon.

Anthropic says "Dashboards work alongside your BI and analytics tools," so a BI tool such as Power BI with Copilot still handles analysis that goes past a quick question. For when to use each, see Claude Dashboards vs Power BI, or match a tool to your data stack in Claude Dashboards alternatives. Anthropic's admin guide says artifacts, including dashboards, are available in Claude on web and desktop and in Claude Code, but not through third-party cloud platforms.

Claude Motion Beta and Other Artifact Updates

Alongside Dashboards, Anthropic introduced Claude Motion in beta on Team and Enterprise tiers. Claude Motion turns content into short animations, such as an animated chart for a board deck or a product walkthrough for customer onboarding, per the Claude Motion help page. Rather than generating video through a video generation model, Claude Motion writes code to animate text, charts, shapes, and images into an MP4 export.

Users initiate animations by typing /motion in chat, selecting Motion under message outputs, or picking a Motion template in the Artifacts tab. Completed animations can be handed off to external creative suites including Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI, and Runway. Anthropic notes that integrations for Canva and Captions will arrive in subsequent updates.

Anthropic also transitioned Docs, Slides, and Design from beta to general availability across all plans, including Free tiers. Anthropic's migration guide says the standalone Claude Design site closes on December 14, 2026. Chats and comments in the standalone version won't be available after it closes, and the "Migrate team design systems" button on the Artifacts page brings over every design system in an organization. Since their rollout in September 2026, users have created more than 45 million documents, decks, and designs in Claude.

Unconfirmed Operational Limits and Technical Boundaries

As of October 2026, Anthropic has not published row, query, chart-count, or data-size limits for a Claude dashboard. Sources also differ on refresh. Anthropic's announcement says Claude "keeps it current as the data changes," while the help center only says each chart shows when its data was last refreshed, and no refresh schedule is published.

Anthropic has not indicated whether Claude Dashboards supports database write-back capabilities, describing only read-based SQL query execution against source platforms. To build a first Claude dashboard, connect one data source and ask a specific question, such as "How do this month's signups by channel compare with last month's?" Then open each chart's query and check what it counts before you click Share.
