Mac Mini M6 vs M4: Which One Should Your Business Buy?

Both chips stop at 32GB of unified memory, so the upgrade buys speed rather than headroom.

Both chips top out at 32GB of unified memory. The M4 comes with 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB and 120GB/s of memory bandwidth, per Apple’s Mac mini (2024) tech specs. According to Apple’s Mac mini specifications, the M6 has the same 16GB to 32GB range, with up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Memory capacity determines which local models a machine can hold, and that capacity is identical on both. What the M6 adds is speed: more cores, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, faster memory, faster networking, and a newer wireless stack. Those improvements are worth paying for when buying a new machine, but they are rarely worth replacing a working one for.

What Changed between the M4 and the M6

The M6 is faster in every direction and holds exactly as much as the M4 did. Apple describes the M6 as its first 2-nanometer chip. The CPU has 12 cores: 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores, so heavy single-threaded work finishes sooner than on the M4's 10. The 12-core GPU carries a Neural Accelerator in each core, and the dual 16-core Neural Engine offers up to twice the peak compute of previous generations.

Memory bandwidth went from 120GB/s to up to 170GB/s, which is roughly a 40 percent increase. That number governs how fast a local model produces text, so it shows up in daily use for anyone running one. For a spreadsheet and a browser it does not show up at all.

Two smaller changes matter more to an office than the chip does. Ethernet moved from Gigabit to 2.5Gb as standard, and the wireless stack moved from Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 7. A machine that serves files to the room now does it more than twice as fast without paying for the 10Gb option.

The Memory Ceiling Did Not Move

Both machines stop at 32GB of unified memory, and that single fact settles the upgrade question for anyone buying a Mac mini to run AI on the desk. A model that would not fit on a 32GB M4 still will not fit on a 32GB M6.

The arithmetic behind that is worth carrying around. At 4-bit quantization each billion parameters costs roughly half a gigabyte, so a 13-billion-parameter model lands near 7GB and a 70-billion-parameter model needs about 35GB before you account for context. The 70B class was out of reach on the M4 and remains out of reach on the M6.

Where the M6 does help is speed at the sizes that already fit. The extra bandwidth and the dual Neural Engine mean a model that already fits answers faster, and faster answers are the difference between a tool a team uses and one they open twice and abandon. That is a real gain. It is not more headroom.

Going past 32GB means the M5 Pro configuration at 64GB and 307GB/s, not an M6 Pro. Apple does not offer one in this lineup.

When to Keep the M4 Machines You Own

Keep an M4 Mac mini doing ordinary office work until it stops keeping up. Browsers, spreadsheets, video calls, and design tools do not touch the parts of the chip that changed, and a machine bought in 2024 with 24GB of memory has years of that work left in it.

The replacement cycle argument usually loses on arithmetic. Swapping a working M4 for an M6 costs $899 plus the afternoon spent migrating and re-enrolling the machine, and buys back a few seconds a day for someone who is not waiting on the computer in the first place. Spend it on the desks that are actually slow.

The exception is the memory tier. An M4 ordered at 16GB in 2024 is the machine to replace first, because it is short on the one thing that cannot be added. Replacing a 16GB M4 with a 24GB or 32GB M6 fixes a real constraint. Replacing a 32GB M4 mostly does not.


When the M6 Is the Right Buy

Buy the M6 whenever you are adding a desk rather than replacing one. At that point the older machine is not free, and paying today's price for today's chip is the obvious call.

The stronger case is the shared machine. An office running one Mac mini as a model server for everyone else benefits directly from the bandwidth and Neural Engine gains, because every prompt from every laptop passes through them. That is one purchase where the M6 pays for itself in a way a per-desk upgrade does not.

Network-heavy roles are the third case. A machine hosting shared files or acting as a backup destination moves from Gigabit to 2.5Gb Ethernet, which shortens every large transfer in the building. Anyone moving video, design files, or database backups across the office notices that on the first day.

What Is Identical on Both Machines

The case, the port layout, and the display limit carry over unchanged. Both are 2.0 by 5.0 by 5.0 inches, both weigh about a pound and a half, and both drive up to three external displays.

Both also offer three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, and two front USB-C ports with a headphone jack, which means every dock, drive, and monitor cable already on the desk works with either machine. There is no accessory bill hiding behind the upgrade.

Storage matches too, at 256GB to 2TB. Neither machine lets you add memory or storage after purchase, so the order page is the only place the decision gets made on both generations.


Who Should Buy Neither

An office that needs more than 32GB of unified memory should skip both and look at the M5 Pro configuration of the Mac mini, which reaches 64GB with 307GB/s of bandwidth. It costs considerably more, and it is the only Mac mini that runs the 70-billion-parameter class of model.

A business running Windows-only software should not be choosing between two Macs at all. The comparison that matters there is Mac mini vs a Windows mini PC for business, where the software list decides the buy before any specification does.

Anyone shopping on price alone should also look at a used or refurbished M4 rather than a new M6. The M4 does ordinary office work at a fraction of the price, and for a reception desk or a meeting-room machine the newer chip changes nothing a person would notice.

The Verdict

Buy the M6 for new desks and for the one shared machine running a local model, and keep every M4 that is still doing its job. The memory ceiling is 32GB on both, so the upgrade buys faster answers rather than bigger models, and speed is worth paying for on a machine you were buying anyway.

The exception cuts the other way. A 16GB M4 is the machine to replace first, because memory is soldered to the chip package and the shortage it creates gets worse every year. Trading it for a 24GB or 32GB M6 fixes something no setting can.

What would change this answer is an M6 Pro. If Apple ships a Pro version of the M6 that goes past 32GB, the whole comparison moves, because the upgrade would then buy capacity instead of speed and the 70-billion-parameter class would come into reach on a current chip. Until that happens, check the memory tier on the machines you already own and replace the small ones first.
