The NPU: what on-device AI really means here

The K15's headline feature is its Intel AI Boost NPU, rated at up to 13 TOPS (trillion operations per second) for INT8 workloads. An NPU is a small, power-efficient engine built to handle AI tasks that would otherwise tie up the processor or graphics — things like background noise removal on calls, live transcription, camera effects, and the on-device AI features increasingly built into Windows and business apps.

This is where the K15 earns its "AI" label honestly, and where its local-AI story is genuinely more positive than the integrated-graphics mini PCs around it. Those machines have no dedicated AI hardware at all; the K15 does, so the assistant and productivity features that lean on an NPU run more smoothly and use less power here.

Be realistic about scale. At about 13 TOPS, the K15's NPU is tuned for lightweight, always-on AI features — not for running large language models locally. It also sits below the roughly 40-TOPS bar Microsoft sets for its Copilot+ PC label. Processor and graphics: capable all-rounder
