Is Gemini 4 Argon Free? Access Rules and Cost Breakdown

Which Google plans and API tiers include Gemini 4 Argon and what one test API call costs.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Oct 13, 2026

Gemini 4 Argon is not free. Google excludes Gemini 4 Argon from the Gemini Application Programming Interface (API) free tier, while the consumer Gemini application requires an active paid subscription to Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra.

Google released the Artificial Intelligence (AI) model globally on October 13, 2026, following an initial September 30 announcement. Access for developers runs strictly through paid endpoints in Google AI Studio, Android Studio, and Firebase AI Logic. For consumers, Google AI Plus and non-paying accounts receive no Argon access.

The only official no-cost route is a selective program offering 10,000 scientists six months of access to Google Antigravity. For all other users, access requires paying commercial rates or subscribing to an eligible consumer tier.

Gemini 4 Argon Has No Free Tier

Gemini 4 Argon offers no public free tier across either developer endpoints or consumer applications. On the Gemini API, Google documentation states plainly that the model is unavailable on the free tier, requiring a linked billing account for every call. For consumer interfaces, free accounts receive no Argon access.

Consumer access requires a paid Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription. On Google's subscriptions page, Google states that Argon is available to Google AI Ultra and rolling out to Google AI Pro subscribers in select countries. That documentation notes that Google AI Pro receives expanded access, while Google AI Ultra receives higher access across the Gemini app, AI Mode in Google Search, and Google Antigravity. Google publishes no numerical message limits for these consumer tiers.

The single exception to paid access is Google's program granting 10,000 selected scientists free access to the highest Antigravity usage tier for six months on a rolling basis. Everyone else needs a paid Google AI Pro or Ultra plan or a paid Gemini API billing account.

Cheapest Ways to Use Gemini 4 Argon

The cheapest way to use Gemini 4 Argon programmatically is through the Gemini API Batch or Flex endpoints. Under Google's published rates on the Gemini API pricing page, Batch and Flex processing provide a 50 percent discount compared to standard API calls. Through November 30, 2026, Batch and Flex requests cost $1.00 per 1 million input tokens and $5.00 per 1 million output tokens, before rising on December 1 to $2.00 for input and $10.00 for output.

A few Standard API test calls cost cents. A single standard API call with 20,000 input tokens and 2,000 output tokens costs $0.06 through November 30, 2026, calculated as $0.04 for input and $0.02 for output. That same call costs $0.12 from December 1, 2026. A test run of 1,000 such calls costs $60.00 before the change and $120.00 after it.

Scientists can apply for one of 10,000 free six-month places on the highest Google Antigravity usage tier. As stated in the Google launch announcement, admission is rolling and subject to eligibility, capacity, and selection. What Free Gemini Users Get Instead

Free Gemini accounts do not include Argon. The Gemini models and limits that free accounts do get are covered in Is Gemini free?, and plan prices are in the Gemini pricing guide.

The paid Gemini API includes 5,000 free Search and Maps grounding requests per month, shared across Gemini 3 and newer models, per the Gemini API pricing documentation. Past that allowance, grounding costs $14.00 per 1,000 requests.

Google specifies that customer data submitted through paid Gemini API endpoints is not used to improve Google's products.

Price Changes for the Gemini API Taking Effect on December 1, 2026

Google launched Gemini 4 Argon with a temporary pricing reduction on API endpoints that expires on November 30, 2026. On December 1, 2026, Argon's rates double on every paid Gemini API tier: Standard, Batch, Flex and Priority.

Standard API rates will increase from $2.00 to $4.00 per 1 million input tokens, while output tokens, which include thinking tokens, will increase from $10.00 to $20.00 per 1 million tokens. Cached input pricing will rise from $0.10 to $0.20 per million tokens. The Priority service tier will increase from $3.60 input and $18.00 output to $7.20 input and $36.00 output per million tokens.

VentureBeat reports that Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol list at $2.00 input and $10.00 output per million tokens, whereas Claude Opus 5.5 lists at $4.00 input and $20.00 output. Who Should Pay for Gemini 4 Argon Before December 1

Google reported that Argon achieved 77.9 percent on DeepSWE v1.1 and reduced code rollbacks by nearly a third. Vals ranked Argon first on its Index, at 68.90 percent, on October 12, 2026. Input and output share one 1,048,576-token budget per request; the Gemini 4 Argon limits guide covers how output is capped.

The Google Cloud HIPAA compliance page does not include the Gemini API or Argon on its covered-products list for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Covered entities must not submit Protected Health Information (PHI) through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio. Google's HIPAA page also warns against using pre-GA offerings with PHI, and computer use on Argon is labelled Preview. Covered entities should confirm Business Associate Agreement (BAA) terms in writing with Google before processing patient records.

The answer would change if Google adds Argon to the Gemini API free tier or to free consumer accounts. Waiting does not make Argon cheaper: Google's schedule doubles API rates on December 1, 2026, so developers pay least by running their tests before November 30. To start, turn on billing in Google AI Studio and send one test call with 20,000 input and 2,000 output tokens, which costs $0.06 through November 30.
